My economy store brand 2008 built MTD machine is identical, except for the tires. No problems, just annual maintenance. I'm always impressed when it chews through a heavy plug at the end of the driveway. I guess that's why people like their snowblowers so much.

This helped me resolve a problem today and I needed to get inside the transmission to have a look. I removed the wheel under the carburetor to get more elbow space to work and clean out my carburetor jets. When I put the wheel back on, the wheels didn't engage forward or reverse?
Solution: there's a small half moon key in a a "key way" on the driveshaft, located on gear sprocket (right side). This got loose and fell into the transmission pan, then onto my driveway. Luckily I was able to find it and put it back on. Wheels engage now.
Dude you saved me with this comment. Thank you. I took the left c clip off and slid the drive shaft to the left to show the half moon slot location. I could not figure out why the drive was not engaging and that was the culprit.

It all makes sense now Paul… more people should watch this video so they understand the value of a Toro or Ariens with Auto-Turn technology. When you look inside both standard (no Power Steering) and Auto-Turn snowblowers it makes a lot of sense.
I liken it to when I first got my car license, I couldn’t believe how easy it was turn… I was trained in a car with Rack-n-Pinion steering but grew up with watching people dealing with Standard steering. You had to rotate the wheel a lot just to keep it straight and turns were a lot of work.
It’s a huge difference, just go outside on a day when a lot of people are shoveling or blowing snow. Most people will have to do these huge turns in order to turn at the end of their driveway. The new Ariens and Toro’s make turning so much easier and pretty much everything you really need in a snowblower. MTD comes at a lower price point, and it’s quite shocking that there are still models out there without Power Steering.

To keep mice out of the inside of your blower (or away from anything else you own) just put a moth ball or two inside there in the spring and they will stay away for good! I used them on my motorcycles and fish houses and never have mice problems again!
Good point and I have had problems with mice nest in many of my mowers - but - mice usually nest in the fall and winter - I've never found a mice nest in a snowblower because in the fall/winter is when they are used.
Thanks for the video-it helped us go through potential causes, but our gear on the wheel shaft doesn’t seem to be moving. The plastic/or hard rubber piece on the shaft had popped off so we tried to wedge it back on and it was longer than the actual space on the shaft-we had to sand it to get it to fit back on and yet the gear still won’t turn us less I turn it with my hand-it won’t turn with the wheels. We have tried looking through everything you mentioned and it all operates fine it appears it might be something with the gear causing the drive not to work. Any suggestions?

My 10 year old Troybilt Storm 2840 sounds like tank/caterpillar tracks in forward, quiet in reverse. Do I need to replace friction wheel?
The only way to know it's the friction disk or something else is to get inside the transmission case and look. You can use this video as a guide to see what it should look like. If you need repairs check out donyboy73 channel. His Videos will walk you through the repairs.
Which do you prefer the Ariens Deluxe 28 or TroyBilt 2890 NoiseGuard technology?
The Ariens. It has a lot more capacity and won't clog on heavy/wet snow.
How does one adjust for forward in r1 issue? Model 2410. The cable when in r1/r2 is tighter than a banjo string. I have had this unit sense late last winter, almost springtime and I'm pretty sure I had both reverse settings last year. Do you have a video about this issue?

@@PaulSikkema Thanks I saw that video but that bracket is not the same as mine. Maybe they changed the style on newer models. Mine has the black rod coming out with a half moon shaped at the end where the cable goes. It has a series of holes I can choose from. Supposed to be mid 30s today so I'll play with it today. I'm trying to get the friction wheel to the left of center for reverse correct? thanks
@@PaulSikkema Well I now have reverse. I had to remove the nut from end of that rod that holds the bracket with the holes the cable goes into. With the bracket off I repositioned the cable end into the next hole down on the bracket. The friction wheel now goes to the right of center and I have two reverses and better forward speeds I think as well. thanks
Is the Arctic Storm any different inside?
Yes, All the components in the Arctic Storm are a lot heavier duty. In addition, there are two sets of planetary gears, cogs, and cables for the power steering. It's built to last and I highly doubt you will ever have any problems inside the tranny on the Arctic Storm
Why would it throw auger belt it is a new belt and did the same on old belt
Something in one of the pulleys. One of the pulleys/bearing is broken. Belt too tight. Belt too loose. The brake on the large pulley inside the trans case may be broken/worn. Engine bolts are loose.
Check all the pulleys for rocks. Wiggle all the pulleys. Adjust the belt tightness using the procedure in the operator's manual.

Same blower, i took the wheel off. Fixed the flat it had. Put it back on and now it wont move in drive or reverse
Took that panel off for the transmission . Everything is moving when i engage drive except the axel for the wheels? Anyone have any idea wht the hell i did?
Pull the wheel back off. Is there a slot in the axle? Look at the end of the tire that goes on the axle. Is there a tab or a slot? If there is a tab line it up with the slot in the axle and slide the wheel back on.
If there is a slot find the steel key that dropped out of the slot when you took the tire off. It's either a square piece of metal about an inch long or a piece of metal in a half-moon shape. Put that back in and line up the slot in the wheel rim.

I took the wheels off and put them back on and now it won't go in drive is there any help out there ?
It's this 2860? Does the axle shaft turn but not the wheels? If yes, then you need to remove the wheel and make sure the flat spot on the axle matches up to the flat spot on the wheel rim. Slide the wheel on the axle all the way and then tighten the bolt.
@@PaulSikkema i have the 2660 which is very similar to the one in the video I opened it up and noticed that the gear on the shaft where the wheels are spin but the wheels won't spin with it
@@alexnicolas9135 @Paul Sikkema I have the 2410. Removed a wheel to clean the carb. Now it won't drive forward or back. See the shaft on the right side turn but not the wheels.
Most likely the key or the half moon key fell out of the shft when you took the wheel off or the flat spot on the axle is not lined up with the rim. Check out this video starting a minute 38 to see a couple of examples how the wheels are held on the axle. ruclips.net/video/KxXuNZWDLYg/видео.html
