      @@Dylansftp There are species that you HAVE to hunt and reduce as they are invasive. I'd rather have hunters eat those then just killing them because they need to for ecological reasons.
      The problem is not that we consume meat it's how we acquire said meat and how much we eat of it.
      I blame poachers a thousand times fold more then actual hunters doing their job.
      I've never met a hunter that didn't carry huge respect for the nature they surround themselves in. It's mainly those that never witnessed or had to do a slaughter by themselves.
      Hell when I was shaving sheep's with a farmer I worked for it felt awful to.judt fixate it's legs so it wouldn't be hurt in the shaving process. Not to speak of witnessing the neutering of piglets..

I am a supporter of sustainable fishing and consumption of seafood but, like the video said, this is cruel and wasteful. It is doubly sad is that some of the people who participate in these cruel activities do so because it is one of the only ways they can make a good living. I have to disagree with that comment all the animals you listed are killed as quickly (normally) as possible not butchered like the shark and then thrown back to die a slow and presumably agonising death. If your produce is coming from somewhere like that I’d seriously think about looking into find a different supplier!

    • @manne4795
      @manne4795 3 года назад

      @@IrishDougal Normally, cows, chickens and pigs do actually suffer non-instant deaths. I know this is the case in the US, UK and Australia, but I'm sure other countries do things better.
      However, what I meant with my comment was that a cow has the same capacity to suffer as a shark.
      Videos of cows being stabbed to death: "Hey that's food."
      Videos of sharks being stabbed to death:
      "Such savagery!"
      I am pointing out the speciesism. How animals are killed is very varied, but plenty of footage from so called "free range" and "grass fed" farms reveal they have it no better than the shark. But frankly, whether the shark above was euthanised humanely or stabbed would not have made a difference. People empathise with sharks, but not with cows.

    • @IrishDougal
      @IrishDougal 3 года назад

      I sympathise with all animals my point was the way in which the animal is killed and I also never mentioned instant I also know given the choice I’d take a bolt to the head rather than having my leg chopped off and left to bleed to death.
      I’ve worked across Europe and know how all the meat that I use is raised and butchered I understand that’s not viable for everyone. Regardless my original point was about the sharks in the video who I have the same respect for as any living creature and that I find the brutality abhorrent as I would I’d if the video was about conventionally farmer animals if they were being treated with the same level of disregard.
      I understand your point about speciesism however it’s not applicable to the point I was trying to make.

    • @manne4795

    Thank you for raising awareness! I think that you described the consequences occuring due to shark decline well. Overall, it is a bit more complicated than the main points you mentioned, because they do more than food web control (e.g. sharks are important for nutrient cycling, control of diseases, regulation of invasive species populations) but, the important message you brought across remains the same: we need to do something! And soon! Most of the shark species are at least threatened with extinction, mainly because of fishing pressure but also because of habitat loss and other climate change related problems. We cannot ignore that countless sharks are slaughtered every day. For me they are special, majestjc and beautiful animals (my favourite- hope to see them soon for the first time in real life while diving). Sadly, for the average person they are not as important. Maybe because they don't seem as cuddly and friendly as your 'neighborhood' dolphin... Bad news for the ignorant people, dolphins will also have to pay the price for the actions of humankind, as countless other species will have to. Once they are extinct, there will be multiple things affecting all different kinds of marine ecosystems and it is not going to be pretty...

    Thank you for your thoughts, Woody. I am very curious about your opinions on the sharks in the Palm Beach County area. Myself as a fisherman have noticed that the shark population seems to be increasing and their predation has increased in these areas (I seem to notice that they are more aggressive about taking fish off of our lines). I fish in Stuart and Jupiter. There seems to be a sentiment among recreational fishermen that there are too many sharks around and they are actually causing the opposite effect in especially the Jupiter area. I know and understand the issues in Asia and am 100% on board with you there, but I think it is dangerous to compare what is going on there to what is going on here (loss of ocean biomass and seemingly increase in shark activity in the PBCounty area). Would be interested to hear more of your wisdom about this

    This is beyond stupidity in my opinion, we are killing ourselves, through killing our Oceans. I do not blame the fisherman, sorry to say. If it were not for the people that purchase Shark Fin products, these fisherman would not be killing sharks. My heart breaks for these and many other animals we have wiped off the face of this planet.

    For the beginning of the video 2 things I love you said. 1 sharks. Sharks are the wolfs of the seas. You can see where they (wolfs) have changes the eco system in Yellowstone. You can see where sharks have changed the banks. So loss of one thing can cause a downfall big or small. Also you said the natural life of climate. And not to get big into it but I think life moves on climate will change as we have seen in multiple ice ages we had. Then also yea we have caused some increase but it’s how we live. And life is life. Woody the hippy of the sea. What make it so so so horrible is the sharks are still alive then left to drowned. So sad for anything. So so sad.

    I think there's an unfortunate dark side to humanity that can easily encroach any person who lacks empathy and understanding.
    I apologize because this post is going to be longer than what I would normally post, but I think it's a very important observation that ties in with this video.
    From what I know about animals, a lot of their behavior is done entirely based on instinct. If we could speak to a cat and ask them why they rub their faces on things, would they even know? It's just instinct. Maybe it feels good, maybe it makes them feel safer, but it's just instinctual feelings.
    Humans have instincts as well of course. A lot of phobias are some instinctual. I have a fear of the open ocean; a fear of the unknown predators lurking in the distance unseen, but I've never been TAUGHT this. I've never been attacked by anything in the ocean. I was scared of the dark as a child as well, and I had never encountered a predator of any kind. It's an irrational and instinctual fear that I have. Humans have the luxury of higher thinking. We're so far removed from the constant need to focus on survival at all costs that we don't have to run on instinct. Sometimes we even do things directly in spite of those instincts because we're able to use logic and reasoning. Unfortunately some people take what I can only assume to be related to the feelings of survival and bring it to a dark place.
    The basic goal of any living thing on Earth is survival. Imagine a prehistoric human fighting off an aggressive bear in order to defend his family, and how good he would feel after defeating this predator who was directly posing a threat to himself and those he cared about. The point here is that it's not the act of killing that makes you feel good, it's the fact that you were afraid of a threat which is now gone and you no longer feel afraid. You're not getting a high off of the kill, you're simply returning from a state of negative emotion to a state of neutral emotion. What if that same human is actively seeking out bears in THEIR homes to slaughter because it makes them feel good? That's just a murderer. You feel powerful because you're eliminating a supposed threat, but premeditated murder isn't a survival instinct. You are not responding to fear and defending yourself, you're using your intelligence to hunt down animals who are just existing in their own sphere of nature. Hunting for food is one thing, but hunting for fun is another.
    Animals don't typically kill for fun, they kill for basic needs or in response to a direct encounter with a possible threat. If I could talk to that same cat from my earlier example and tell them "hey, there's a big bear in that cave" their instinct is going to be to stay the hell away from that cave at all costs. Humans have started killing for power and greed. Some people do it for sport because they want to feel powerful, and others do it to make money. The problems occur when you remove yourself from nature to the extent that we have while failing to consider or care what you're actually DOING to the world around you. We have the intelligence to be able to defy nature in some absolutely crazy ways, BUT the same intelligence we use to defy nature also allows us to understand nature to a higher degree than other animals. A cat doesn't need to think about the implications of their hunt because they're only obeying their natural instincts. They get food when they're hungry. Humans are smart enough to know that hunting more fish today means you don't have to hunt tomorrow. We're also smart enough to define murder and know that it is wrong, but we don't always care that it is wrong.
    I can only hope that, one day, humans will evolve as a species such that those of us who don't care for nature will die out. Not talking murdering those who don't care for nature of course, but species evolve to better suit the world around them. If the world no longer has a place for humans who commit acts of murder against nature, then that trait will hopefully die out. Too many people are getting away with it right now. We have such immense power as a species and can do wonderful things for the world, but we can also harm it all the same.
