Nvidia's $70 Million Florida Supercomputer Hobbled by DeSantis

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had initially thought that a supercomputer bankrolled at the University of Florida by billionaire co-founder of chip giant Nvidia, Chris Malachowsky, would be a magnet for AI talent. Almost four years later, DeSantis' staunch anti-China stance has instead prevented some of the most highly skilled AI researchers from countries like China and Iran from ever setting foot in the state. Bloomberg's Michael Smith joins Ed Ludlow on "Bloomberg Technology."

    The Chinese and Iranians (Indians and Russians too) are simply hard workers and are willing to put in the time to study disciplines that we spoiled Americans find tedious and pedantic. All this "nationalism" and anti-immigrant rhetoric reduces our talent pool and relegates us to being 2nd, 3rd, 4th rate innovators because of politics (you know who). My family is a family of scientists. I'm Ukrainian, my wife is an American born Russian, her mother and father defected from a communist Soviet Union at the height of the cold war yet couldn't be more patriotic regardless of their heritage. They are both microbiologists, one also has a law degree (just for fun) and they both still study classic literature, the father is a chess master and the mother (the one with the law degree) is a published and performing poet and their daughter (my wife) is an MD and her sister, a lawyer, both Ivy League graduates and the father a tenured professor, department head and research scientist at an Ivy as well. He collaborates with scientists all over the world (speaks seven languages) which in the science world reduces the possibility of wasting time duplicating experiments and enriches his knowledge as well. My point is that we all live on the same rotating orb and gain so much from each other and have come too far as a species to let the fragile ego of one silly man to send us backwards in our pursuit of a better future. The Chinese are super competitive but so are we and closing our borders to smart, talented workers will further relegate us to be playing catch-up rather than being the great prosperous nation that was our trajectory before ultranationalist protectionist fervor reeled its ugly head. As for the spying, it would be naive to think adversaries couldn't think of a way around DeSantis's shortsightedness.

      So inshort this would be a good news for china, because now their brightest talent don't have any other option but to improve their own technology, well let's see if chinese government could capitalize this opportunity

      Worst thing that can happen is to alienate other countries and start economic competition that leads to war. It doesn't make any sense. We could be cooperating as a single planet to solve all of the challenges threatening our existence.

      Nvidia cannot sell fully-functional AI chips to China. The US cannot sell anything to Iran. Seems prudent to put in a measure to protect this asset, which is available to all State of Florida schools. Naive to think otherwise. I tried to find the legislation to read the details myself, but all i find are articles saying it hinders recruitment. UF is one of the hardest schools to get into these days. I doubt they are starving for talent. If anything, AI talent is going into industry immediately because they can make a fortune.
      Congrats to your family. Seriously. Mine escaped communism as well. The evil (rather than silly) man i would be concerned about is Putin. Tell him we are all on a happy orb. I'm shocked he's still around...

    I read that Nvidia provides tech for crypto mining services/blockchain transactions. Could the current crypto pump be attributed to Nvidia’s great earnings and should I hold some crypto as well, cos tbh I’m having FOMO with the current crypto price at 64k.

    Adversarial government...
    Much as foreign oil can be valuable, foreign work is just as valuable (or really, more)... It's foolish to play the game in a way that you lose access to resources that you can use for your benefit.
    The main thing that's needed with China, is to somehow get us to the point that we're willing to respect each other's interests and work towards a common good.
    Their government wants what's best for their people. The US government (theoretically) wants what's best for the American people... Non-mutually-sabotaging agreements have to be possible.

  • @Leto2ndAtreides
    @Leto2ndAtreides 6 месяцев назад +1

    The problem with this adversarial approach on talent is that it's too easy to work around. Can Chinese start a company in Canada and attract talent from the US with good compensation? Can they do things in Europe or have remote orgs?
    Being anti-competitive is not usually the better long term play... You need to just commit to being better.
    People are not as important as systems - as what you've built that enables you to do more.
    Besides, China is super committed and they have plenty of talent. And there's no magic to research... You're learning about what works in the real world - and that is something that anyone can do with enough effort.
