Thanks for watching. I’ve used over 60 of these 125 Lifan’s. The thing I’ve learned, they don’t require a break in. I’ve got 2 with over 8000 miles each and I revved them to the limit straight out of the box. These engines are nearly indestructible.
@@MiniBikeMike guess that is a good thing. Saw a little smoke when you revved but maybe build oil but myself I would always let any motor warm up a bit to get oil throughout the motor. Just like starting a car or truck and revving it right away. Don't think you would have oil all through motor. Just an opinion. As far as indestructible they should be it is a Honda knock off.. :-)..
@@jimg2885 The initial smoke was leftover oil in the exhaust from the bad top end of the stock engine. I’ve ridden the bike all weekend and it hasn’t smoked any more. 👍🏻

Anyone help me figure out what engine swap I can put in a Yamaha ht-1. I am hoping to restore the OEM 90cc motor and put a lifan in my current ht1. Someone told me the Lifan engines mount horizontal, just wondering it would fit my HT1.
I’m sure it’s not a direct bolt-in, but anything can be made to fit.

The 125cc engine is perfect for ripping around trails or in the yard. With the correct gearing, you can hit mid50’s mph.

It depends on the engine. Most Lifan’s with one yellow and one white are half wave. I typically purchase complete engine sets that include items like the CDI and coil. If you need a coil, they can be bought at Trail Buddy, CHP, Mikes MiniTrail, etc.
Hi Mike, fairly new to your videos but love them thanks. Im thinking about putting in a 125 unbranded lifan into my 1971 honda ct70. I was wondering if the engine you used was a 4 up or 1N234 shift pattern and where you bought yours and part number. I love the way yours sounds and revs and want to make sure I get one similiar to yours. Hope you have time to respond, Thank you
I don’t remember which shift pattern this particular engine had, I’ve used lots of each. They’re all gonna sound the same, the top end of each is the same.

@kennycas7668 I’m not aware of any company building knock offs of Lifan engines. Lifan puts their name on the side of some engines and charge a little more because it actually says “Lifan”. The sell the exact same engine on eBay and Amazon as unbranded and they do not say Lifan. If the cam cover has “CDI” in big letters on it, it’s most likely a Lifan. I buy the unbranded versions on both eBay and Amazon, whoever is cheapest at the time.

@@scottberti2613 Old video and the suppliers change the links. It’s just a standard Honda CT70H clutch cable.

@scottberti2613 If you’re using the stock internal Honda throttle, they all stick. No amount of cleaning will get it to snap back. Josh Eule has a spring kit to help the stock throttle return.
why do you not put a higher cc on it? Nice video
The 125cc pushes this bike to 60mph. I have no need or desire to go any faster. Plus, the Lifan 125 is the most dependable aftermarket engine out there. I’ve used over 60 of them and have never had a problem.
Hi! I have a question. I am about to swap my honda chaly 50cc 1975 engine with a 125cc cross engine. Do i need the 12v wiring harness? Or it s okay to continue with the stock one?

I’ve never worked on a Chaly, so I’m not familiar with their harness. Personally, I’d pull the old harness and install one designed for the 12v engine.
I’m about to put a lifan 125 manual clutch on a 1968 Honda CL90. Do you have any pointers and if you ever done it and do you have a video on it?
Just be prepared….it’s not a direct bolt-in. The CL90 used a different engine bolt pattern than the CT70 and current aftermarket engines. You’ll need to fab some engine mounts for it to work. If you can handle that, the rest is pretty simple.

Hats off to you sir great video. been thinking about doing this . I have the same bike 73.low compression and a good running china 110 atv with a bad frame. thumb throttle semi 3sp ct 70 on the way. any link or pointers on the harness build ? going to need a battery as it electric start only . but more interested in the branch off wires for the 12v conversion.
Trail Buddy harness TB422 has all the wiring for electric start.
After watching your video on the harness I'm just going to start with atv harnesses and build it to my needs. 👍

I sold this bike shortly after the video was made. These engines are extremely reliable. I have a couple Lifan’s with over 6000 miles each.

Yes, if you didn’t get a coil with the engine, you will need a 12v coil. The link wouldn’t have been for a coil, I only buy engines that come with the “set”: …..carb, coil, etc.

You didn't put oil in the engine, I heard that oil is good for an engine 🤭
These engines are shipped with oil in them. I like to put around 100 miles on an engine, then change the oil.

Nice . I have a X19 with a 110cc 4-spd auto transmission electric start.
I got a 125cc with a 4-spd manual trans to put in the X19 (An unmarked Lifan)
I think it will fit in it well without much modification

It's been 3 years since this video. I'm looking at Amazon and there's a big price range for these motors, about $260-$600. Which one do you recommend these days? Generic or Lifan? Thanks so much/
@@vorhese It depends on what features, in an engine, you want. I really like semiauto’s. To find those, the current choice is 110cc X-Pro or the expensive Lifan 125cc. If you want manual, I prefer the 4up shifting, so again, I go with X-Pro 125cc. If you want 1dn3up, then the unbranded Lifan on Amazon is fine.

They do come shipped with oil. I usually run them a few hundred miles, then change it.

Depends a little on your front sprocket. I’d run a 16/33 or a 17/35.

@@Storm20199 I run the shipping oil for the first 100 miles. Many people are confused about the shipping oil. Somehow, a rumor was started that it’s not good stuff. It’s actually gear oil. They ship the engines with it because it has a higher resistance to rust than normal engine oil. I like to run it for a 100 miles, to get all the internals coated, then change to 10w-40 four stroke oil.

Wow Mike, your awesome and a Master at what you do. After 50 years the Honda CT70 from 1974 still looks modern and not outdated especially compared to all the other bikes made that long ago. It just seems to me That the CT70 never became outdated especially with its looks. Mike if anyone can understand what I am trying to say it would be you lol. Do you know what I mean and what im trying to say because its hard to explain im sorry to say? It seems like Honda made a bike that will never look outdated... Great video. Was wondering what exhaust you're using. I just swapped out my CT70 with a Lifan 140cc, but the og exhaust doesn't seem to fit properly, thank you.
I always use the stock exhaust, I like the way it looks. The rear mount doesn’t line up. If you watch my video after this one, I show how I fix it.

I doubt there is much difference. I would have used the one that came with the engine, had it not had the cable operated choke.

CHP, Trail Buddy, Mike’s Mini Trails…..they all have stock cables. If your Lifan has a manual trans, you’ll need a clutch cable from an H model.
Why do you prefer the PZ22 carb on 125’s? I’m running a VM22 chinese Mikuni and it seems to work well. I believe the VM22 is supposed to be 26mm?
I use a Nibbi 24mm carb on most of my personal bikes. The goal of this video was to show that you could buy the complete set (with carb) and swap out an engine in a day.
@@MiniBikeMike do you ever end up needing to change the jetting on the nibbi 24 carbs? I saw someone else’s video of a champion with the nibbi 24 and it didn’t seem to run quite right with stock jets
I think it’s in my video on the trashed swingarm. I sad show the Nibbi and what jets I used to get it to run the best.

Mike, I am a newb to your channel. Had a CT70 for my 11th birthday present. The Blue one! Thank you Mamma for doing house work all year to gather the 4-5 hundred dollars it cost back then. Wish I hadn't let it go as now watching you even the frame would have been valuable to me. Here is my question. I am 64 years old and want a bike that I can get my bad knees over just to play around with my son in the hollow I live in. Would like to be able to license it as well for short jaunt to the Post Office about a Half a mile away or so. Is an Ice Bear worth having since I may never see a CT70 again. Would love it if the Honda Dax is released in America but the original CT70 is where my heart and memories are. Sorry for such a long comment. Love your channel so now a fan for life! Or the rest of mine anyway! I could watch your videos all day long!

Hey Mike my head light doesn't turn on unless I hit the break light and it also does the same when I hit the horn button I don't know why it's doing that
What harness are you using and what model bike do you have? If you have a yellow wire in the body harness, it connects to the brown/red wire of the Hi/Lo switch.
@@MiniBikeMike I have a 1971 honda ct70 with the trailbuddy TB515 12v wire harness the one that you have and the yellow wire is connected to brown and red but when I pull the break light switch the head light turns on and and when not pulled the head light will turn off I have look over the wiring and all is connected right
@@contrains1264 I would unplug all the wires in the headlight bucket. The only wires I would hook up are:
Yellow of harness to Brown/Red of Hi/Lo switch
Blue of Hi/Lo switch to blue of headlight
White of Hi/Lo switch to white of headlight
Green of headlight to green in harness.
Make sure everything else is unplugged.
Start your bike.
The headlight should come on and the switch moves it from Hi to Lo beam. If that works, start plugging other wires in and check their operation as you go.

Personally, I’d leave everything else unplugged and make sure you have the headlight working properly first, then start plugging in other wires.
I will end up needing those spacers/longer bolts for my foot peg mount... where did you get yours?
I own a steel company. I cut them from 1/2”od x .065wall round tube. Available at most steel shops or hardware stores.

Mike I want to do this to my ct70. Not sure of its year, having tranny trouble so good time to just upgrade the engine. I have a 3 speed auto and want to do the 4 speed manual. Shouldn't be any problem right? Just no neutral light, no biggie.. Also working off your lift of parts, 2nd ebay is not found with link, what is this part? Also ignition is out of stock and suggestions? Sorry about all the questions I just really want to get rolling on this. Lastly the unbranded ebay engine is ok? No trouble with it????
The unbranded engines are very good, zero troubles with the dozen or so I’ve used. You can get an ignition switch from Trail Buddy, with the wiring harness. I think that other item was just a cheap inline fuel shutoff. You can pick those up at any hardware store.

I’m sure I purchased it on eBay……many years ago. As for size, I’m not sure. I made that video so long ago, I don’t remember. Maybe 1/4”?

I typically use a harness from Trail Buddy. Their part number is TB515. Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock, so i built this harness from scratch, duplicating the Trail Buddy harness.
The wiring harness for running with no lights typically comes with the engine when you buy it. If not, all the parts suppliers stock a simple harness.

What's the best way to wire in a clone motor on a CT70 that already has wiring and blinkers?
Completely remove the stock wiring harness. Contact Trail Buddy and buy their 12v harness(part #TB422), a key switch and a 12v half wave regulator.

That's what they told me to buy, the TB161 kit. Are you saying the TB122 $57 universal 12v harness will replace the ENTIRE old harness along with TB153 12v 4-Pin Key Switch with Lock Assembly and would have working blinkers and everything with some basic splicing?
Could I use the existing OEM 3 position key switch?

Not sure if I just keep missing it but I got my motor in and the front sprocket is wider than the original what should I do to mend that?
Sounds like they sent you an engine with a 428 sprocket. Does it have 428 stamped on it? Regardless, you’re going to want a new sprocket anyway, the stock ones are way too small….usually. You need a sprocket with 16 teeth and fits a 420 chain. The tricky part is the splined hole size. There are two different size splined shafts on these engines: 17mm and 20mm. Hopefully, your sprocket has it printed on it or the engine came with specifications that list the shaft size. If not, you’ll need to measure it. eBay and Amazon have plenty of sprockets for $15 or so.

It comes with oil. I usually don’t change it until 500 miles or so.
