    This is an old video and at the time most everyone was mixing water into their WMO’s. Now companies have recommended water mixable oil mediums for paint and use water for cleaning. I use Murphy’s oil soap and water to clean my brushes, and now use mediums to mix into my paint. Usually beginning with fast drying medium and later a fatter medium or oil.

    Speaking about oil color and problems come by using traditional solvents (as turpintine, spirit etc.), have you never tried vegetable solvents? No bad smeal,
    no pollution, no bad effects on the skin, very effective. I strongly suggest it to everyone whants preserve light of traditional oil color without collateral effects.

    Lots of great information, Sharon! I've never tried oils because they seem like so much more trouble than watercolors. All those solvents and messy things always discouraged me. However, I just might give the water mixable ones a try one of these days. Thanks for explaining it so well.

    Love your video! I bought some Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint box sets from Hobby Lobby, their Artisan thinner, and one Artisan Painting Medium. I read the pages on the Winsor & Newton pages on their Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paints, Thinners, and Mediums. There they make it clear that for a satisfying painting experience, one should use their Artisan thinner, mediums, and oils; water is generally reserved for clean-up. Avoiding thinning paints with water keeps the pigments from separating and using their thinner, mediums, and oils makes the Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paints feel oilier, smoother, as opposed to draggy and sticky. So I'm going to take their advice. Hope this works out.

      Yes, they're trying to sell mediums but there's more to it than that. Reading from artists who successfully use Artisan and like it, it seems to me that the ones happiest with these paints and their mediums generally use water for cleanup or plein air only, or perhaps in the imprimatura staining layer. They paint using minimal amounts of Artisan mediums, both only as much as necessary to get the job done and to keep in practice with the oil painting rules. They may use mixtures of Artisan mediums for several reasons -- it helps them in observing the painting rules, lends the properties of the mediums, makes their paints feel more like traditional oil paints, and allows them to adapt the paints to a variety painting methods. And yes, Artisan paints are student grade paints because of the hues, etc. I had so many questions, so here are my notes that will help me get started. I had to do a lot of digging to bring it all together and I'll still workin on it. karenascofield.wordpress.com/2017/08/20/windor-newton-artisan-water-mixable-mediums-and-drying-time-fat-over-lean-rule/

    I love those mdf boards they are just so darned heavy to hang on just some random wall without nailing into a stud. That said, they are GREAT to paint on with oils and acrylic. The poppies painting is awesome! The dune panels are nice. LOL as painters we accumulate so many brushes. Regular oil based good paint, is like soft butter and you can add additives to make them peak and stiffen or the reverse thin with a good walnut oil or turpentine. Lean to fat. turp dries it out and oils dry longer. A la prima yes! I had to give up oil painting because I was raising my son, can't wait to get back to them. Maybe plein air this year, I have a french easel!? I don't know, you're inspiring me! :) I've use fast drying medium and it made my paints crack so be careful and maybe do a test mini painting first, lean to fat. Man I went through my old oil stuff and some is still viable! 10 years! How is it people are doing thumbs down on your videos??? Honestly! This is very correct and informative!

    Fascinating stuff - the water mixable/miscible oils look like the answer for anyone who is allergic to traditional solvents (or who simply doesn't like messing with oily solvents). Looking forward to seeing the upcoming painting.
    My Conda painting knife set arrived today and I'm hoping to give them a go soon. I have acrylic paints rather than oils but I assume they'd be a reasonable decent alternative to the oils if I was thinking of trying to follow along with your oil paining (making allowances for the shorter drying time, of course)?
    Postie also delivered that set of Royal Langnickel gouche paints that you recommended recently so, wife and dog permitting, I have plenty to keep me busy over the next few days, weeks, months - maybe I'll have a go at painting those 5 beers of yours? Hehe ;-)
    Anyway, as always, thanks again for taking the time and trouble to produce all this superb material for us all. Best wishes, Brian.

    Great information. I am just learning to paint and thought I'd try water mixable oils. I painted a very large painting on stretched canvas but now would like to paint over it. Can I Gesso over it and paint something new? If so, what kind of Gesso should I use? If not Gesso then what should I use to be able to reuse the huge canvas again for another try with water mixable oils? Any information would be appreciated.

    • @SharonCullenArt

      Great question! I would not recommend it unless it is just for practice. My understanding is that you either need to remove the old paint with turpentine or thinner, outside of course then wipe off old paint. Or the other option is to carefully power sand the surface but you may run the risk of tearing your canvas. I would just purchase a new canvas, especially if it is reframed. The more expensive linen might be worth the trouble.

There are some that I like of other brands like white etc. at the time I made this video a few years ago, there weren’t many options. I think there were 3 brands and Holbein was the best of the 3. I don't think I can take them back to Hobby Lobby. Any suggestions? I did buy the Artisan thinner, medium and linseed oil if that will help. I was just dismayed that it doesn't spread very well especially when watching a ton of YT videos and wondering why I wasn't getting the same results. They are gorgeous colors which makes it that much more disappointing.

    With water mixable oils you should be using senthetic bristle brushes because the hogs bristle brushes do not do well with water and are not made to be used with water. Love Terri Simmers.

    • @SharonCullenArt
      @SharonCullenArt  4 года назад +2

      Actually they can be used. People who leave their brushes sitting in liquid will get bloating over time. They are actually used a lot in acrylic painting as well as watercolor although I find them very stiff for watercolor. I do use my Chinese hog bristle brushes for watercolor occasionally. I don’t remember this video very well since it is an old video, but over the last 2 years or so, I began wiping my brushes a lot more and leave the water for cleaning which is just fine. Whoever taught you this probably had trouble because they soaked their hog brushes. And I never let my brushes sit in a cup of water.

    Disagree with fat over lean ...I've glazed thin layers of paint over thicker layers and I have never seen cracking ... never ! Instead of using all those mediums, just use water. That is the advantage of using these paints.

    • @WXYZ3213
      @WXYZ3213 7 лет назад

      I have paintings that are on canvas, wood and mdf that are at least 16 years old, possibly older, using the Artisan WMO and there has been no change to the texture (no cracking) or colour of these paintings. You can also speed dry the layers using Krylon matte spray and work immediately on the next layer of glazing without disturbing the layer underneath. Take a look at Ann Kingslan, www.kingslan.com/. She and her daughter have been using the Artisan paints and using these techniques for years.

    • @milafo
      @milafo 7 лет назад

      Actually fat over lean is true just for traditional oil colors in which pigment is driven by oil. In this case, water mixable oil colors, oil is substitued by other chemicals which are water sensitive. The term oil is used just to underline effect looks like oil color.

There was nothing positive in your comment "all I want to do is take a pair of scissors and ship that piece of hair off..." and if you must know with glasses and a borderline length of hair it wouldn't have stayed behind my ear and then I would have been playing with it. But really, how come no one ever comments on the looks of male artist channels huh? Women are the worst. And you attack other women. This comment was not meant to be positive. Most mature people would have let it go if it bothered them. In fact they did. Did you notice you were the only one to say anything? This is not a hair and beauty channel. All I ask is that you stop the keyboard vomit that you post to others. I'm sure I'm not the first to receive one from you. Usually people who do this do it everywhere they go. And I won't tolerate it here. This crap is pathetic!
