Huntly Castle is located in the county of Aberdeen in Scotland. The castle consists of a five-story tower, a so-called Great Hall adjacent to it, and other buildings. The partially preserved facade decorations testify to the former splendor.
The history of Huntly Castle, then called Strathbogie, begins in the 12th century. At that time, on the site of the now visible complex, there stood a tower hill castle made of wood, a so-called motte. In the course of time it was continuously extended. In the 14th century it came into the possession of Sir Adam Gordon of Huntly.
During the Scottish Wars of Independence, King Robert the Bruce was a guest at Huntly Castle in 1307.
Around 1449 King James II was at war with the influential Earl of Douglas. In this he was supported by the Clan Gordon. The Earl of Moray, brother of the Earl of Douglas, took advantage of the family's absence and pillaged their lands. Although the Gordons quickly rushed back and repulsed the enemy forces, they were unable to save their castle. Huntly Castle burned to the ground.
The Gordons, however, rebuilt their castle. And it was bigger and more beautiful than ever. They continued to maintain their relations with the royal house. In 1496, James IV. James IV was best man at the wedding of the English pretender to the throne, Perkin Warbeck, and Lady Catherine Gordon. In October 1501, James IV again came to Huntly and paid out cash bonuses to the stonemasons who were working on the castle. He also took part in the local shooting competition in 1503 and 1504.
In the 16th and 17th centuries the castle was further expanded.
In 1576 George Gordon, the 5th Earl of Huntly, collapsed while playing football. The cause was poisoned food. After his death, according to tradition, mysterious events happened.
During the time the Earl's body was laid out in the "Chamber of Dais", two servants and two other people collapsed for no apparent reason. When they regained consciousness, they complained of cold pains. And after the Earl's burial in the chapel, his brother, sitting in the great hall, heard unexplained noises coming from the locked "Chamber of Dais."
In the early days of the English Civil War, the Scottish Covenanter army captured the castle. In 1644, James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose Huntly, took Castle. However, only a short time later he lost the castle to Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll.
Three years later, battles for the castle raged again. Lord Charles Gordon and his men defended Huntly bravely. But they were starved out by General David Leslie's troops and had to surrender. Now the cruelty of war revealed itself fully. The soldiers were hanged and the officers beheaded.
In December 1647, the Earl of Huntly was captured and placed under house arrest on his estate. He was forced to watch helplessly as his retainers were shot outside the castle walls. In 1650, King Charles II of England was defeated, sealing the end of the Gordons' rule over Huntly.
After that, the castle began to fall into disrepair and the people of the village used it as a quarry to build houses.
In the Second Jacobite Uprising of 1746, the castle, already in ruins, was occupied by British government troops.
It was only in the 19th century that a nostalgia movement saved Huntly Castle from final decay.
Since 1923 it has once again been owned by Clan Gordon and is now managed and maintained by Historic Scotland.
