Abandoned Hand Plane Restoration

  • Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. This old rusty hand plane has an interesting story. The seller found this plane in an abandoned chicken coop. I can say that this restoration was one of the most time-consuming.
    Restoration process:
Initially, I disassembled the entire plane in detail. All the parts I left in the rust removal fluid. Then I washed everything in water with cleaning agent and oiled it. Then I started polishing the parts via iron brush. The most difficult thing was to restore the sole of the plane. It took 2 days. I sharpened the plane knife again. The wooden handles were sanded, oiled, and varnished. Part of the broken rear handle was repaired with sawdust and glue.
There was a lot of work behind the scenes. I really hope, you enjoy my work. Thanks for your attention!
    Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Great job. I watched my grandfather as he rebuilt several hand planes. He was a carpenter and cabinet maker and depended on his tools. Always took pride in producing a quality, hand made product. You brought back some great memories, and I thank you.

Excellent job, looks new but better. I'm busy sorting out my dads old tools, there's a great sense of achievement in restoring old tools. such history in them. I recently learned the trick of using polyurethane varnish mixed with sawdust if you want the filling to match the stain, I've never tried super glue though, looks much quicker. One last thing, your first aid looks like mine, paper towel and electrical tape, works better than any band aid!

Hello. This planer was made in the USSR (Sestroretsk instrumental plant named after Voskov). Approximately in the 60-70s. After the victory in the Second World War, enterprises were taken out of Germany as indemnities, including Kunz firms. Kunz, in turn, used the Stanley model number 4. I myself constantly restore these planers and I want to draw your attention to the following: 1) you did not set the rear adjusting screw correctly, it has a special groove where the fork is inserted. 2) Be sure to sand the back side of the blade. The planer is excellent, good luck to you. sorry for google translate.
