The reason why most Silat sweeps don't work are due to errors in position. Pendekar Paul was very specific about position. For example, the positions are different for Beset as compared to Sapu. The body mechanics are also very specific on how to use the upper and lower body. In Kuno Silat (Bukti Negara), there are 2 divisions and three dimensions, and several specific positions. This is the what Pendekar taught when teaching his system, and why most folks doing his art or a blended version of his Silat struggle with making the sweeps work. The sapu luar seems to be the sweep least used, but it is a sweep with high percentage. Most folks use the sweep from Sambut 2. Sambut 2 is the form where the sweep in this video comes from.
Great reminder of the details!
When the feet cross we call that the dummy step in my school. Nice Stuff!
What kind of follow ups do you do after the sweep? Very good explanation. I like it! :)
Knee to the face is what I teach or do a heel pick and go to knee ride. Other ideas run or gun (weapon access).
For me, stomp on the extended ankle, then knee the face, then continue to bulldoze through him with knees and kicks.
Appreciate the focus on structure and shout out to your fellow Guro.
Do you use a pantjar for learning Maphalindo SIlat ?
Hormat
I've learned silat primarily through studying with my primary Silat teacher, Guro Dan Inosanto, as well as his senior student, Guro Daniel Lonero (XTMA Founder). I've trained with other Silat teachers and influences over the years, but these two gentlemen have been my main source in this art.
The old trapping the static, extended punch move?? Works well when you know what punch is coming and for some reason they leave it extended. Let's see it at 80% speed and you dont know what's coming??
I teach it as a response to a grab and never consider this a valid entry for striking. At its essence is to teach flow and chaining.
It will come naturally from daily intensive training, the reflex, the muscle memory
sweep....you can also drop your opponent without touching him
