years ago i asked my aunt for a ds-1 for christmas and, meaning well, she told her husband to order a ds-2 because she figured it would be better since it had more features and was more expensive. cannot thank her enough for that, i love my ds-2 and am so glad that i have it instead of a ds-1
DS2 is clearer regardless the settings. DS1 seems a bit more noisy+muddy when tone, volume, or dist are pushed too to far. Thanks for the fair comparison.
I have both and my take on the differences between them is this: The DS-1 has a much rawer character to the distortion, and more extreme filter sweep on the tone control, where it filters out extreme amounts of bass and pushes the treble to a ridiculous extent as you turn the tone up, making its usable range of adjustment fairly limited. but it preserves the dynamics and expressiveness of the guitar much better at lower gain settings than the DS-2. The DS-2 has a smoother 'texture' to the distortion, less extreme filtering that makes the tone control a bit easier to work with becasue it doesn't filter out quite so much low end as you turn it up - so you can still get an aggressive edge without hollowing out the low end. But it's also got a bit less definition overall, I find - It can be a bit 'soft focus' sounding with certain rigs. The midrange boost you get from "turbo" mode is VERY aggressive. Both are good at doing their own thing, with a certain amount of crossover where they can both do the same type of thing equally well depending on what you're trying to do with them. I find the DS-2 a lot more versatile, but there are certain characteristics of the DS-1's sound that I like better overall.
I have always loved the DS1 and recently Keeley modded my 1981 model,it's a whole new great but I missed the sound of the original and decided to get a new one.As I searched online up came the DS1-4A 40th anniversary.Black and Gold limited ed and exactly the same price as a standard model.Well I had to buy that one,how could I not?Now I am happy again.Grab em quick, ltd ed remember!
I have a DS- 1 but what I've noticed is that it doesnt give you volume from clean to distortion and DS-2 does so it seems like the DS-2 a bit of a better choice in this case.
I can get that kind of tone from my older SS Fender Deluxe 85 combo! It has a parallel channel feature that allows the clean and overdrive channels to run at the same time. I don't play with that often anymore, but it's nice to have for some classic rock and 80s Rush. :)
Great video! I have both and both are great for different jobs. If you want your distortion coming from a pedal into a clean amp, I would go with the DS-2, plus you can switch between the two modes by connecting a latching footswitch into the 'remote' jack socket. Mode 1 is darker, perfect for rhythm, while mode 2 has more mids and an open sound that works great for leads. If you want to boost an overdriven amp, the DS1 is one of the best pedals out there!. Turn the distortion all the way down (still distorts nicely) and push the distorted amp's input with the level while adjusting the clarity/thickness you want with the tone control. It's my favourite booster pedal out there.
DS-1 , in my opinion, is significantly more musical . Raw real Rock-n Roll . Actually DS-1 together with for example SD-1, will sound much more interesting . Thicker and more musical than the DS-2 . the DS-2 is a compromise.
I like the DS-1 better for crunch rhythm i.e. low gain/distortion. That edgy breakup seems very like pre-amp valves starting to crunch to me. but the DS-2 better for higher distortion, it also seems to have a wider range of useable tones. How that would translate to different pickups and an amp with different mid characteristics I don't know.
DS-1 for me, but not many around these days... I have used this pedal for years and it rocks!! But like everything in this world of music, it all comes down to personal taste. And for the price, you just can't beat it.
DS-2 was my first distortion pedal. I boght it in the 90's and I used it for years. Than I sold it to buy the DS-1, crazy moment at the guitar shop (I own a mxr, and a metal zone too, but in the end I always prefered the ds-2) I found it second hand and I wanted the original one. Nothing... after less than one year I bought the DS-2 again. The DS-2 sounds exactly as the DS-1 with the turbo option that I like a lot.
For me..ds2 is good..for metal like "Seek and destroy" (metallica) it suits well. But for album "master.." and "And justice" better get tube amp or pedal for metal..imo
heres a trick for when using a ds-1; if you want a fuzzy tone crank up your distortion all the way up, then take down your tone to 9 o'clock or 9 and a half, and then adjust your volume according to what you want, this will give you a lot of sustain a because of how much you roll off your tone and how much gain you have; PLUS, this pedal tends to give you a lot of hum, so if you turn your gain all the way up you will get a lot of hum but the tone rolled down will tame everything down (DISCLAIMER: this setting is the one that i use for my affinity strat with single coils so if youre using a guitar with humbuckers you may need to take down the gain and bring up your tone a little bit :), you just need to tweak it until you find the sweetspot)
The DS1 featured a couple of crazy design decisions, namely a transistor boost section before the opamp that had way too much gain which meant that certain guitar signals would get this really squashed, shrill tone even at minimum gain. Then there was a tone stack which allowed you to balance between an unuseably dull sound and an unuseably shrill sound. With the DS2 it seems like Boss adjusted the values of those parts of the circuit to make a more useable, better sounding distortion. It turned out that a lot of musicians really liked the sound that arose from the "bad design" of the original DS1 and it continued to outsell the "better sounding" DS2. Setting 1 is just a modded DS1. You should be able to mod either pedal to sound like the other with a few cap and resistor subsitutions.
First off, I am a huge Boss pedal fan and user of their modulation pedals and their Overdrive units. I just placed my order for the new 40th Anniversary Boss DS-1 Distortion. I rely heavily on the Boss OD-3 Overdrive and I like the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive. I am watching and listening to You Tube clips to try and understand why my last experience with a DS-1 seemed too harsh and way to loud. Hopefully this will help me get a better tone from my new DS-1.
Remember if you're ever using any overdrive/distortion pedal with a solid state amp, to turn down the level on the pedal to almost zero then put the amp volume way up. Otherwise, the pedal will push the amp too hard and will make it distort, which unlike with tube amps is NOT a nice sound. Lots of people try DS-1's with SS amps and put the level on the pedal way up, and then wonder why it doesn't sound good
Both are awesome pedals. If all you have is a ds-1 and want more balls run a boss overdrive or joyo vintage overdrive after it and you got a ds-2. No need to spend a fortune on pedals. Boss rule, always have. Been playing thrash and metal sinse 82.my board is simple -mt-2, ds-1, boss Od, boss eq, boss noise suppressor and dimebag wah through a 100watt fender champion solid state amp. Sounds amazing from classic rock to doom. No need to spend a fortune on pedals, like all these tone snobs. Playing is from the heart and your fingers... Peace...
I've seen some pedalboards that have them both. Could someone tell me what would be the reason to use them both at the same time? I've seen it in John Frusciante's pedal board.

I can't understand, I like it more than my PROCO SOLO, and the proco is an expensive analog distortion pedal with lots of versatility. DS-1 rules. Gotta try some mods, but I think it will lost it's unique tone...thank you for this review.
Like I said before, been using the ds-1 my whole career since it came out. Amazing pedal. Run an overdrive pedal after your ds-1 and you got amazing powerful tone, better than the ds-2 and most distortion pedals out there. I use a joyo vintage tube overdrive, so much better than the overrated and overpriced tubescreamer..

I would think the remote pedal would be essential to getting the most out of the DS2. I mean, it does act as a boost to go from an OD rhythm to an OD lead, right?
I've had the mega distortion for like 15 years now. It's got such a narrow gap of settings that actually sound good and are usable, otherwise it's way too bassy or way too trebly. That one setting that sounds good is great but it's definitely not a versatile pedal. Unless you put an EQ pedal after it in the chain and change it that way
vampx2010 id be incredibly surprised if they discontinue the DS1. Its their most popular pedal. The turbo has been out since the early 90s. Its not replacing the the original anytime soon.

Because IT HAPPENED TO ME ! I am no longer able to switch modes. The SD-2R has a superior design. Enabling you to access both modes even if the remote switch fails.

the Ds2 also has more of a bass/darkness then the ds1

Stock pickups except the Jazzmaster; Strat & Tele are USA made. All my other pedals sound great with any of these guitars. I don't like the DS-1 at all, and am thinking of trying modding it. But I like the sound so much more in this video. My amps are a Blackstar Club 40, and a '90s Fender Princeton Chorus. My DS-1 is pretty new, so I wondered if the older ones were better.

I just bought ds 1 cause i thought john frusciante use ds 1 and then he using ds 2... And i search this video for comparing those two and can ds1 sounds like ds 2???
