My 2011 Ford Escape has been leaking tranmission fluid for the past 3-4 years, but it hasn’t been bad until the past six months. After doing some research, I came across your video and I have the exact same problem as the Escape in this video. Thanks for the informat and inspiration.
Is it still going did you get it fixed?
@@philcollin5891 I did, in February. It was the a/c condenser. Plus had other general maintenance done.
Nothing like a video from someone who knows every detail of the repair.
You even provide details on the gloves you use. Amazing. You empower the less competent to take on tasks we never dreamed of. You are a clear, concise, and encouraging teacher. Thank you!

Once again you rock !!!!! i been working on cars since 1973. Back then it was pick up a Chiltons manual's and fix it. Now with you make working on Fords super easy. You save me a lot of money. I just want to say thank you so much. Working on my wife's ford Escape was a breeze. Today it was AC conditioner and dryer for AC.
Last month it was the whole electric steering column for her Escape. So once again thank you. ROCK ON !!!!!!!
john R
Yea I've the steering column stuff on my escape. But with the video even that wasn't too hard.
Great video. What a wonderful ideas of Ford's engineers, to have the cooler and the condenser in the same piece. Makes a simple and inexpensive repair complicated and expensive. I'd go with a separate cooler, as there's there's high chance the new part will fail again.
If I were an aftermarketer I'd be making a seperate cooler that mounts in front of the original.
We've run into this problem several times at the shop where I work, not just with Escapes but with Fusions too (in the Fusion's case, it's the power steering cooler that's integral to the condenser). Every time, we install a seperate cooler in front of the condenser, and it works perfect. Never had a single comeback, and the AC works great.
This is one of the best video's I've seen on RUclips ! It's all about the details. ! Great Job
Brian you should be a teacher at your local tech school. great videos
+ryan mac Thanks!
This was great! Very much like the repair videos we used to get at the dealership. Detailed, organized, and full of good Ford tech info.
Professional and detailed. Thanks! This is going to make the replacement a piece of cake.
Nice diagnosis and repair. I'm replacing a friends 57K mile '10 Escape sway bar links this weekend and will inspect for this potential leak. Take care Brian, thanks for the video
+Ozzstar Good thinking.
Thank you for the video. This site has the best videos for working on cars. This was simple, thank ya Jesus.
Awesome video. Not too often do we get to see body panels / full nose being removed and installed especially with all of your Pro Tips. Great Video !! Thank You.
+Hawaiian F150 Yup something different.
Wow. This video may have solved my atf leak ! Only difference is mine is leaking on passenger side up towards the top I think . I just put my escape up on the ramps and wiped as much as I could to identify the leak with no luck really . Thank you. I also subbed too .
Excellent video. I now know exactly what all the lines are on the condensor. I have a tranmission fluid leak from the a/c line side of the condensor so I know it is the condensor. Also, I now have confidence in how to remove and install bumper cover. I will tackle this myself and save hundreds. Thanks!!!
I’m just bypassing the factory trans cooler with an aftermarket cooler. But thank you for the tear down. I needed to know if the transmission lines were barbed or screwed on. My vehicle is a 2008 Ford Taurus Limited. Got it for free so $68 bypass cooler is the mission for me. And you gained a new subscriber 😀
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do a step-by-step.Simple Green is an amazing degreaser!!!
Brian, you should be the head service tech at Ford. Very comprehensive instructions for proper repair.
His the best so far because I have the same problem with my ford escape
Just discovered that my 2008 Ford Fusion 3.0 v6 has the same freakin' problem. This is going to be a fun job. Luckily I know how to rip the front bumper cover off on my own pretty easily 'cause I had to replace my headlights about a week back.
Thanks for the great video.
Wife: Hits Speedbump
Me: Adding trans fluid EVERY DAM DAY
2 months later: Sees this video
Me: Goes to garage at 3:00AM
Me: Surpised pikachu face!! 🙀🙀🙀
Issue: Condensor Cracked
Fix: $225.00 - Chicago parts n labor
Thx bro
Thank you so much for your video!!! Very well made and very detailed! I was able to do this job in just 2hrs because I knew exactly what to expect. ThAnna again and good job 👍🏻
Brilliant video, plus tool list links. Comprehensive as it gets, great video. Should charge a few bucks.
thanks for the video. I had a rock shoot a hole right through the AC condenser so i had to replace. used this video in the garage step by step.
Thank you
Great video Brian. We have a '14 escape in the family that don't leak anything. I still enjoyed watching this informative video though!
thanks so much. i have to do this exact repair to my 2010 escape hell its even black like this one.
is your AC not working too + dripping transmission fluid?
Great Video! Thanks so much, helped me replace out my condenser due to it leaking refrigerant.
Did mine today, other than the crappy clips that hold the bumper cover on, it was easy. My condenser was leaking at the header where the lines bolt on. I'm a AC guy so the refrigeration side was easy.
Thanks so much for your help! Mine was leaking where bird feathers were embedded in the condenser...Use PAG oil from ford. I believe it’s PAG 46 weight. Don’t use 100 or 150. I replaced the accumulator as well and think it’s a best practice. $20 bucks on amazon. PAG was $18 at the dealer
Great video. I was surprised on my wives 2007 fusion 2.3 that at 90k her trans cooler line was leaking. Once I got in to replace it it made sense why it would. the line was all rusty and it's just under the radiator so when it gets wet it probably just holds moisture. Anyways some of the tools you recommended on past videos helped me out replacing this.
Thank you for the video sir one of the problem of my car
ARE THESE LEAKS MOSTLY WITH THE 6 CYL OR DOES THE 4 CYL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE? GREAT JOB WITH THE VIDEO IT WAS VERY CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE NOT THAT DIFFICULT OF A JOB!!! THANKS!
Another amazing video! Now for my dumb question: Is there any point in super cleaning the area at the leak and attempting to stop the leak by applying a liberal glob of JB Weld or some comparable glue around the place where the pipes enter the core? THANKS!
Great video as always! Seems like a better design would have been for Ford to utilize that whole area of the condenser for the AC refrigerant and add a separate cooler in front of the condenser for the trans oil. That would have been better for the AC's cooling as well as making repairs much simpler and cheaper.
Hello quick question, I'm wanting to install a auxiliary transmission cooler on my 2010 Ford Escape v6, which is the inlet and outlet for the factory cooler? Thx
Another great video. Thanks for posting.
Hey Brian, I know this seems out of sorts, but i was thinking you could do some videos dealing with modifications. Improving from stock specs to improve power and/or fuel economy. Or exhaust work like installing exhaust systems for deeper tone but not screw up emissions. Just ideas as food for thought. Thinking of ways for more viewers to join you
Well-done young sir ! Thank you
Great video! Wish I watched this video instead of another I went step by step by and found out the hard way that it was incorrect by adding a/c pag oil. It was more involved with the AC then just the condenser. Unfortunately they said to add 2 oz of pag oil when now my AC has to much pag oil. I haven't found much as far as fixing this issue so I'm hoping this is something I can correct myself without having to pay to flush my AC system. If you happen to have any videos on removing compressor oil I'd love to watch it? I appreciate any help you can give in this situation. Thank you in advance.
For those that do not have an AC machine, bypass the factory trans cooler, install an aftermarket universal trans cooler. The Ford Escape has plenty of space up front for one.
Do they have the same option if its the A/C side that fails? as in a aftermarket universal A/C cooler?
Great Video! Thank You. Do I have to change the Drier out? If I do, do I put Pag Oil inside the Drier as well? I can see the leak on my Condensor, it's bad for sure. Thanks Again.
Well obviously they consolidated all these parts to make a more compact vehicle even more compact. But also guaranteed failure. As my dad would have said mockingly of Fords catchline. Another one of "Ford has a better idea" moments. 😂
Thankfully I found a good mechanic that will do it all for $400 out the door.
haha, my dad said the same thing. Hes gone now but he couldnt speak english well, he used to say "ford got some good ideas"
oh wow, i have a 2010 Escspe 4 cylinder only 115 K on car. My transmission started slipping suddenly, took to Advance Auto and they had to put 3 qts trans fluid in, also AC works intermittently , Rep at Advane looked under car and he said he didn't see a leak...so I am looking at an expensive repair to get my ac to work??.
brian i know you don't like to use aftermarket parts but in this scenario the spectra premium brand is better build quality at half the price. check it out next time. p.s. if you ever have catastrophic a/c failure you cant flush the condenser.
+NCPDFSB
thanks for the tip, and hey I live in nassau county thanks for your service keeping me safe!
There shouldn't be a problem if you happen to mix the two trans hoses, correct? Great videos, keep up the good work very much appreciated.
Great video especially on taking off the bumper, that was one of my concerns. I'll be replacing the compressor, drier, condenser and most of the rubber hoses on my 08 escape hybrid. How much pag oil do I need and what type (pag 46)? Thanks
How do you remove the transcooler line outlet on the other side? Mine is worn and i want to change it out when i change out my condenser just incase
Thanks,Ford tech for this video you a lifesaver.I had this same problem with my 2009 ford Taurus and I took it to some I local mechanic I didn’t know to well and he told me it was the ac condenser leaking the transmission fluid out he told me before hand how much is the part and labor so he did everything for $675 but since I paid with my credit card he said it will be a little bit more because of the tax so he charge me $700 even so you think that’s about correct ? Or I got tooken to the cleaners.😆thanks.in advance.
dealer would charge $1500
@@joepayer1793 wow! That’s insane.
Your Kung-fu is strong! Greatly appreciated!
Do you know how to change the cooling fan , for 2011 Ford Escape
How much would something like this cost at the ford dealership ? With my work schedule i am afraid to start a project i cant finish before i return to work again?
Thank you for this info I was thinking it was only my hose, this is gonna save me a lot of money and time. Question, my ac has not been working (my compressor will not engage) , any chance replacing the trans cooler/ac condenser would fix my AC and get the ac compressor to work and engage itself?
So helpful! Sould this cause the transmission to loose power and cause slow shifting to occure?
could i just put an aftermarket cooler in front of the condenser and connect it so i wouldn't have to open my ac system.
+thurmon kent jr Yes you could I just did it this way as most of my customers like to stay with the stock setup.
@@FordTechMakuloco Perfect Thank You !! Also, is there enough space if front of the OEM radiator where it wont interfere with other components during install ?
What would be a good option for A/M cooler
Is the condenser has a leak should I replace the accumulator/drier as well?
If I understand this correctly, Ford runs the ATF through the AC condenser instead of through the bottom of the coolant radiator like other vehicles do. Please confirm this for those of us with limited skills.
Yes hence the leak.
@@FordTechMakuloco Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for the info!
What if I have a leak but it’s underneath my cars engine bay right behind the front driver side wheel? The coooler and grill are all clean and no leaks
I definitely needed this!
Thank you for the video, I am about to tackle the same issue. I wonder what do you think about replacing the drier and exp. valve as well, since the A/C system is empty?
I'm wondering the same thing - I was going to replace due to transmission fluid leaking, but the A/C stopped working today.
If the trans fluid leaking is not the problem, and I just flushed the trans fluid a couple weeks ago, can you do this repair without draining the trans? Just want my A/C back!
i can tell my fluid accumulating at the bottom of the transmission where the plug is (not from the plug itself). would it just be a gasket issue?
Thanks for the informative video!!
What about the vacuuming the system i have a 2009 Taurus SEL A/C CONDENSER need to change.....?
Thank you
The radiator support bar -- on my 2008 Escape -- as a result of a collision is bent in a small section on the driver's side and pushed into the lower portion of the condenser -- causing the a/c condenser to fail/leak. . I haven't tried to disassemble this yet (thanks for this great video) but in your opinion how difficult will it be to "hammer out" the radiator support bar?? thanks.
Have do to one of these soon.
Great walk through video Brian. I'm going to do this on my 2012 Escape this weekend. Mine has a small crack that leaked all the freon out. Do I still have to drain the tranny fluid before I do this job?
Thanks
what happens if i accidentally poured pag oil into both
Great video! Is there a way to do this without vacuuming the a/c lines I don't have that equipment.can I just undo the lines?
hey brian. i was just wondering if there would be a way to bypass the cooler lines to a seperate cooler so youre not having to break the a/c open and save cost on the financially challanged. just an idea. keep the videos going.
I just think why do you need to spend lots of money for the same part that will leak the same as the original one when you can get an auxiliary transmission cooler that can perform better and yet possibly save the transmission. Yes I am a true believer about using factory parts but when you have to spend a lot of money for factory parts when you can get a part that can possibly be better and less costly than the original
+Brian Skinner You sure could there is nothing special about it, that is if you wanted to go aftermarket. There is plenty of room behind there for an aftermarket cooler.
I was just thinking as far as customer cost and not having to mess with the a/c system (evac/recharge). Saves the people some money both part and labor cost. Keep the videos rolling. I was also thinking that maybe you can make videos using aftermarket parts as far as exceeding OEM specs, not hacking but improving performance. I do like using oem parts whenever I can (Oil filters, etc.) but if need be for $ or wearable parts I end up using aftermarket with lifetime warranty usually Autozone because if something is either wornout of defective, they usually replace it at no cost. Just an idea to shoot out there, since people like more power and performance and cost efficiency. Just an idea for the ford enthusiasts, since we know that fords are the best. You need a real truck (a Ford truck. LOL) Just kidding. You do have a nice Dodge truck. Another idea for the other channels is to do maintenance on your truck for the public to see (LOF's, air filter, etc.) Just ideas for you. Keep in touch. Brian Skinner
My thoughts exactly. And if Ford had these mounted with insulating grommets on both sides instead of just the Pas the stress failure would likely never have been an issue to begin with. Just cut off the metal lines, toss on an aftermarket and call it a day.
Should the cooling fans come on when the ac is first turned on or does it wait for the high side pressure to increase to a specific pressure
Yes they should turn on low whenever the a/c is switched on.
Hi, I have a question, maybe it is not about the video, but I see that you are a Ford expert, I have a Ford Escape 2008 Limited, and since a few days ago the outdoor temperature is 50F, it has not changed, I read that it is probably the sensor , and as I have seen diagrams it should be in front of the radiator, but there is nothing there, do you know exactly where it is located? in advance, thank you.
Any idea how far back my leak would go it seems like my leak is center of my 2009 my radiator is oily and plugged up like you showed except my leak seems to be leaking from the center of the vehicle does this make any sense would my leak from the condenser travel all the way back to center of my car dose anybody know the answer thanks
Hello, in a few days I am using your video to guide my self since I am going to replace the condensor of my 2008, but I am not sure about the step when you put the oil inside the condenser, what happens if I don´t put that oil? my a/c system it´s been three month without using since the leak in the condenser, but I am waiting for the new condenser to arrive and remove the oldone. the oil it is necesary? thanks for advanced
Just wanted to ask. The hard cooler lines on my escape are leaking. Wondering what size trans disconnect tools I would need?
I’m hoping just the standard 1/2 “ and also the 3/8”?
Hi FordTechMakuloco,
Do you have a video on removing and replacing a starter for the 2012 Ford Escape 2.5L?
Many blessings and thank you!
John G.
What should i be leary of when looking for one? what i mean is what are the weaknesses with the years. As i was saying, we are tight on funds and live in an apartment which makes things worse since i really can't work on them in the parking lot without getting in trouble. I definitely want 4wd since we do get snowy/icy weather in grand island NE
I love working on vehicles but we do need something reliable and fuel efficient. Please help
so to fix the trans leak u jus drain the fluid?
Thank you for this s video . Can u share your email i would to to ask a question by referring to a picture of transmission. My 2012 escape v6 fw limited, i saw orange coolant in front of top side of front area ( black plate @ 8.00 above u r left hand). All radiator hoses above the black plate is dry. The transmission oil cooler is separate from radiator for this Moddel , how can this be possible. Any tips?
For ford explorer 2016, do you need to remove radiator in order to replace condenser?
Hey Brian thanks a lot for the time you spend making your informative videos. I have a 2011 Escape without this issues, but are the replacement condensers improved at all at the leak point or will this become a common occurrence every 5 or so years?
+peelman1506 The part number has changed twice and held which means at this point they have done a revision to prevent a future occurrence.
+FordTechMakuloco why don't they just make a revised ac condenser then a separate transmission cooler instead of having it all together or put them back on the radiator like my older jeep has its cooler at.
Brilliant how to do video mate.👍👍
Dang. I literally scheduled my '11 to check out a coolant leak yesterday. Turns out this is definitely the issue. I noticed the radiator plugging up on the bottom right side. Would love to do this myself but where I am isn't feasible.
I'm about to drive across the country to get back home. Think it'd be okay for another 4k miles??
where can I buy motorcraft refrigerant you used in the video can't seem to find it online. Thank you.
hi , for hybrid is the same condenser?
Wouldn't it be good to check for leaks and so on before putting it all back together?
+jay bone Yes I mention how I fill and adjust the trans level before I put the bumper cover back on.
do i need to add pag oil if im also replacing the compressor that comes pre-oiled?
@fordtechmakuloco in your other Ford Escape trans fluid change you say 5 quarts of mercon LV.(2010) Does it take more if you are also changing the condenser / cooler like in this video?
hey Brian, I forgot to ask should i go with 4 cylinder or v6? It will have to be an automatic so Debbie can drive it. Any advice will definitely help. Thanks Brian Skinner
Hi Brian. As always great video. I have this issue and i want to know if you recomend the spectra instead of the original ford part. Will works the same? thanks!
Can I safley assume there isnt a need to "EVAC" the system if it leaked out and wont hold a charge very long?
If the system leaked out already then no need to evacuate. Upon reassembly you must pull a vacuum and then charge.
Thanks for your reply, great educational vid.
Is it likely this is where the AC system is leaking as well?
Great info, can you do one on electric fan R&R , thanks .

My
Problemm!!!!
I have an 09 Escape. I recently found out that my condenser is leaking and have been dealing with the hot and humid temperature. I didn't realise until today that the condenser also acts as a cooler for the transmission. For the last few months, my vehicle has been very randomly stalling when I come to a stop. (random as in it stalls once or twice a month). I have 318,000km on it and would love to keep it but the stalling issue is making me wonder whether I should keep it or replace it. Is there a chance that the stalling is down to the condenser leak? The stall issue is when coming off the highway to a stop after on average 140km drives. If it helps any, to get going again, I have to press the brake, press on the gas and out it in drive/reverse to get going. I've had the truck into a couple of ford dealers who can't find any issues of what may cause the stall. Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have to jack both sides to get the front bumper off?
do you have a video on changing the ATF in the e-CVT Escape Hybrid?
That “1 to 2oz” of oil you filled the condenser with was that oil you’ve previously recovered from the vehicle during a evacuation? Or is that “1 to 2oz” of new fresh oil in addition to the oil from the evacuation?
1-2 oz is just to replace the oil lost to the junked condenser.
Awesome video , well done !
Is this a common problem on the Escape?
