Ever think you could do a video on Matt Mercer's Bloodhunter
You spoke of the Witcher being close to the Monster Slayer; but what if you multiclassed into Bloodhunter for the dark fantasy flavour? Idk if it's a viable build, but it's good flavour!
I love the new shelves! I'll miss those box fans in the background though.
You missed the Aarakocra Airborne Ranger.
Crocodile Hunter Dundee
Peasant: what have you rangers done greater than the great battles of the paladins?
Ranger: have you ever seen a chimera?
Peasant: no
Ranger:🤨
Ranger: You. Are. Welcome.
Peasant: what have you done that is more impressive than the kings mage
Ranger: have you ever been troubled by ankheg or a hill giant
Peasant: what are those, no such thing is exists
Ranger: well I help keep your misconceptions about that
My favorite Ranger PC has always been "Shitty Witcher"
_"You wanna know what these two swords are for? This one's for slaying monsters, and this one's in case I lose the first one. He-yump."_
Y'all know me...
this is the actual funniest fucking thing ive ever read
This is so core to my setting
I regularly disarm my players and even break less "customized" weapons
Bringing a spare weapon with you in a setting where monsters can survive getting bludgeoned with a sword for over a minute seems pretty smart to me.
@@Oops-All-Ghosts Suddenly boot dagger!
I like the Idea of a ranger whose favorite enemy are Oozes because they just love the sound of oozes going splat.
Make it a Ranger who has trouble sleeping, so he uses ooze slimes to calm down. He's an ASMRanger XD
@@celebiRULES555 And make it an Asimar too
Cynthia Moraes An ASMR ASMR-anger
Speaking 9d silliness, I recently made a kenku who's home town was Roc's Fall and it becomes an undead hotbed shortly after he left to go adventuring. There will be warning signs on the road "Roc's Fall: EVERYONE dies!"
I see a conjurer overseeing the training of horizon walkers. "Yeah I can open a portal to another plane, but there's dangerous stuff on the other side so I'm gonna make sure these guys are as well-trained as they can be, and send them on my interdimensional errands
Kinda like a dnd SG1
@@gypsywolf9145 more like a dnd chief petty officer
@@gypsywolf9145 omg this is great
I never really saw rangers as civilization haters. They've always seemed to me like a go between for druids and common folk or like specialist mercenaries, very integrated in civilized towns and cities but still very comfortable in the wild.
See: Pied Piper. Lives outside town, but ventures in to make some coin and practice their trade.
And when they're offended, they use natural, archaic magic to torment the civilization that scorned them
This probably happens because people don’t put much in charisma with rangers a lot of the time
@@keepermovin5906 Also because one of the most iconic rangers in the game is from an antagonist race.
I mean if you’re not integrated into society that doesn’t mean you hate civilisation
I like the motivation of a ranger who has beasts as a favored enemy not because of anything that they've done, but because he's just really good and understanding their animal instincts. And he doesn't kill them out of duty but because civilization had pushed out their natural predators and they're growing too fast. Also, he ships any captured beasts off to his family land for further study and public education.
The beast master would interact with the world by sitting down and being sad because their subclass is underpowered despite being really cool
Jack O' Lantern unearthed arcana ranger if you’re allowed it’s really good
I had a character who was an elf, and had previously fell in love with a human. She of course died and he was devastated, he then vowed to protect her village for 4 generations(one for each year he spent with her). Anyways he was fun
What a very elven thing to do! Forget years. I’ll do it for generations. Nice!
Love this!
Elf then gets bored after generation two and starts to "speed things up a little" to get out of the contract early...
Phill early level villains be like:
Sort of like Arwen
I like the idea of each ranger subclass being like the different schools in the witcher series, all part of the same organisation but with different styles and areas to protect/observe. They have secret fortresses far from civilization where apprentices learn the basics before going out with a master and finally getting their own territory to look after. I imagine they could even be a private organisation funding themselves by selling pelts and other bits of creatures to wizards and such.
This is brilliant. I'm stealing this.
There are things that go bump in the night. And we are the ones who bump back.
The dark blade in the light. Using the shadows to further the light.
When Justice does not see the light of dawn, rectify the balance under the cover of night.
Teifling ranger. Who files down his horns. And kills ex-Nazi Russian mystics.
#hellboy reference
@Regular Slime gloomstalker in Obi Wan voice: "hello there"
So the part we’re you guys said “making the rangers magic more skills or equipment” I love that idea.
I love the Monster Slayer because there are so many great characters in media that fit into it. Geralt of Rivia, Hellboy, Van Helsing, and the list goes on!
I've had an idea for a ranger ever since watching The Brother's Grimm. A charlatan Monster Slayer who goes around preying on the lack of expertise about the supernatural from village to village, but when it comes down to actual big bad monsters knows his shit. He may not even always stand up to them because he knows exactly how dangerous it can be. Always go for the easy payday but can be dragged along, kicking and screaming, by a sufficiently good party when shit really hits the fan. Rangers being this ultimate scion of good and virtue always kind of bugged me. Maybe there is a real reason they don't interact with people: they just don't get along with them at all.
Triton ranger with a trident add noble background and bam... you have now made Aquaman.
Isaac McNally nice call! Didn’t think of that one!
Reague of Regends
Aquaman being useless is a meme. He's literally Wonder Woman but with the ability to command aquatic creatures, and cast bullshit Atlantis magic.
I think like 5e vanilla beast master works as it has been memed for similar reasons. Or you could just use the revised ranger or one of the archtypes from xanathars, and not hamstring yourself for the sake of memes.
The Ranger's Apprentice series offers some good fodder for role playing too.

suddenly have the idea of an urban ranger and inquisitor rogue buddy team up to solve crimes
ShurikenSean Inquisitor Rogue and a War Cleric for a Sherlock and Watson duo!
was more going for a clash of world views, knowledge of natural world vs knowledge of man-made
the two not liking the other's thinking but respecting the others strengths
I'm playing an Inquisitive Rogue/Drunken Master Monk right now. He's essentially Captain Sherlock Sparrow
Urban tabaxi ranger (urchin) here, and my friend’s playing his sorcerer brother (criminal). Waterdeep isn’t ready.
@@iv0rysh0es39
I would like to thank you for writing that sentence :) you inspired one of my, and my players favourite NPC:s! Which in turn lead to an short but very appreciated urban crime sleuthing arc!
Every single one of these episodes of this series makes me wanna play these classes! I've never cared for Rangers but I would play one after watching this.
Nuclearchezburgr 385 they are a lovely class to play, I have a human Ranger Beastmaster myself
I've never played one either. If I did, I would choose Horizon Walker because it seems interesting.
Half elf Hunter Ranger, no manners and a bit crazy but man can he shoot
Nuclearchezburgr 385 so true!!!
My very first character was a half-elf ranger/cleric, playing AD&D with some great guys back in '88. Great times!!!
I’m soon to play a Tabaxi Ranger... from Undercliff, who has lived in Waterdeep since childhood. He can handle the woods, but he’s just at home in the city of wonders, familiar with its secrets, its rooftops, its famous alleys and its denizens. I took the Urchin background, and another player is his sickly Sorceror brother (Criminal background). The DM is letting me treat the city as wilderness.
Reading about Waterdeep and immersing myself in it is thrilling. And my player-brother is a bona fide edgy genius, so naturally we gave ourselves adoptive halfling parents who named us “Scamper Damper” and “Snowball.”
I never thought I’d be so excited about an anthropomorphic animal character.
I have a player at my table whom has a Genasi Horizon Walker, and it made sense. A half-elemental raise by his Djinn mother to watch the horizon for their Efreeti enemies. He then found the thin membranes between places to scout and watch whom might next attack his beloved flying city of silver, and protects his home with an enchanted musket infused with elemental power. He's a great character who has no room for the petty politics of single-plane mortals.
Bill Simmons Excuse me but I explicitly read these comments for cool character descriptions like these.
Bill Simmons, nobody cares about what you have to say and you won't shut the fuck up. Why should anyone else?
Bill Simmons How is he the jerk? You're just being an ass
Bill Simmons lmao I cared, its a neat concept, fuck off
Reague of Regends Nah, you're just an ass. He isn't hurting anyone. If you don't like it, ignore it
"Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with bows. Who's gonna do it? You? My existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the truth, and while you don't talk about it at taverns, you want me on that wall. You NEED me on that wall." - Nathan Jessup, Veteran Ranger
He would appreciate it if you refer to him by Colonel, he's quite certain he's earned it...

A royal order of rangers reminds me of the book series "A Ranger's apprentice" (I think that's what it's called lol). If memory serves me correctly they're an order of rangers. Being part of a secluded order that's assigned to protect civilization in the shadows before the problems become know to the general public. I can work with that. Honestly I'm just happy that you guys finally covered my favorite class lol.
my thoughts went there too
Ranger's Apprentice, yes! I loved those books when I was in middle school
Only the first 2 books have anything resembling magic
ahh miss that series
Yes the Ranger's Apprentice series was a pretty good series and the ranger's magic which was precieved as magic by the common folk that didnt have the understanding was just cleaver sleight of hand and slieght of eyes. They also had understanding of the world and how things work like when Will's sneaks into the castle in the trees and he waits for the wind to rustle the leaves before moving would be considered pass with a trace or some other stealth magic.
Ranger Apprentice is a great book series that shows a great way to play a Ranger
"The night is dark and full of terrors."
Gosh dangit, Davis! Now I wanna make a Light Cleric that burns things because of that reason! Also, they're a bit jumpy.
No, that's not me justifying their pyromania..
paranoid pyromaniac
First campaign I ever played for more than one session always had at least 4 Elven Rangers. Whenever a player dropped out, their replacement always picked Elven Ranger. And always archery, not two-weapon fighting. Everyone wanted to be Legolas.
I think it's funny that Legolas is most associated with rangers. He was actually more of a fighter. Especially in the movies when he's action surging all over the place. Aragorn was actually the ranger of the fellowship. He was the tracker that was uncomfortable around people but had a connection to animals.
Yes, I know your comment was from 11 months ago. I thought this was funny enough to comment anyway.
@@DrLipkin Legolas is associated with D&D Rangers cause he did similar duties as the Aragorn, but in his home florest. But both of them were multiclass for me XD
That's funny because he's not a ranger LOL
Dragonheart was a great movie. I must have been eight years old when I first saw it. Watched it over a dozen times between then and when I made my first D&D character at the age of 10 for an AD&D campaign. He was a Human Fighter named Draco, and he used a battle axe. I will forever defend the legitimacy of that movie. Regardless, great episode as always guys.
I've always seen Urban Rangers as being city-hopping hobos. They know all the "hobo signs" to look for, that denote danger as opposed to plentiful food or shelter.
Hagrid is a perfect example of the Urban Beastmaster.
Currently playing a revised Gloomstalker and he is my favorite character. He’s a young human who was branded by the darkness of some nature goddess, turning him into a gloomstalker with a kind of warlock patron relationship that my dm makes awesome
Urban Ranger: you mean Green Arrow?
MrFForger shoots the bandits, roll to quip.
MrFForger With his trick arrows wouldn’t The Green Arrow be closer to an arcane Archer. An arcane archer/shadow monk . Those two classes I think would be needed to make a Green Arrow . Or at least that is how I would do that .
YOU HAVE FAILED THIS CITY
My Monster Slayer Ranger became one by total accident. He used to be a charlatan rogue who impersonated the great monster hunter "Hans Velsing" so much that he had to become a ranger to keep the lie up XD Going through Curse of Strahd with him currently :)
Fake it 'til you make it: the source of many an adventurer.
Wonder how many fake holy men in DnD became so popular, the god they purported to speak for decided to make them a Cleric for real. "What? You SAID you were my prophet. I'm just giving you what you asked for. Now, about your holy quest..."
This deity would of course have the biggest shit-eating grin cos they either A) just got rid of a false prophet, or B) just got their will enacted anyway.
Batman is a Gloom Stalker :-p. I like that they kind of respecced Gloom Stalker to be more general, instead of specifically tied to the Underdark. It makes the archetype more broad/open to some fun interpretations.
Note that I don't really see a Ranger as having to shun/avoid civilization necessarily. I do think the loner aspect drives the class, but being among people, but operating outside of the constrains of civilization, to me, is what makes a Ranger go.
Reague of Regends he is every martial class and every non evil alignment
This channel completes me
Your username completes me

Best of both worlds a really nice guy but king of insults for early 80s cartoons.
I love the idea of a horizon walker ranger, multiverse traveler, and the idea of fighting eldritch monsters
The Rangers Apprentice book series is a great place to get inspiration for your ranger that shows them as an outsider and yet still part of the community and war effort.
Now I want to play Ranger vigilante named Ratman. With mask, tail (instead of cape) and wise old butler.
I would absolutely love to play a horizon walker as a sort of planar Gypsy, travelling through the different planes, collecting odd trinkets and telling fortunes with his planar Tarot Deck. Also Horizon Walker is somewhat viable for a throwing weapons based character, you can now finally play as Gambit in D&D!
Reminds me of the Grey Warden in Dragon Age Origins.
Dan Young Oh dude, yes. I didn't even think of that. That's awesome
Favoured enemy: dark spawn
Yeah but with out the Grey warden blood Poisoning .
My first ever character was a Ranger. Because of that I have kind of a soft spot for it.
That terrible moment when you find a channel, binge every single episode in less then a week, and then have to wait one week for a single episode.
Also, Geralt the witcher is basically just a super badass magical mutant ranger who bangs sorceresses.
Given the types of magic Geralt (and Witchers in general) uses, he'd probably be an Eldritch Knight in 5e mechanics. EKs can cover most of the Witcher Signs between Evocation, Abjuration and their free pick spells.

One way a player of mine has used the ranger is as a hunter with the criminal background.. Played him as a bounty hunter.. Favoured enemy humanoids.
That was a fun character
The only ranger I’ll play is a Power Ranger
Asiel Romo what color
Walker Texas Ranger
Fuck you. I hate that this made me smile.

DracoFlyer maybe more of a kensei for a specialized weapon.
Yay, new webdm before i gotta get to work, good way to start what's effectively my Monday.
Have a good day at work!
Pruitt, I love the picture of you as Navarre from Ladyhawk, it's a great reference, although he would actually be a perfect battlemaster fighter. Aside from the movie, looks very rangery
I've been loving this series of RPing classes, they always give me a few ideas for characters that make me think outside the box.
8:55 Solid Ninja Scroll quote from Jim on the 25th anniversary :D
I play a Horizon Walker. A TON of fun to play. Has a great background. Wonderful addition to a group dynamic.
I love this series and have recommended it to all my players. I kinda wish that you guys had talked aobut how a ranger would fit into a party. Most of the stuff you talked about in this episode fits better with a solo ranger, rather than a member of a party. Any thoughts on working rangers who live on the edges and spend so much time alone fit into an adventuring party? Thanks, dudes!!!
I’ve watched like every single one of these, but I always come and watch again. Y’all are Great!!!
thank you for discussing travel time and rp. i played a CoS campaign where the dm just wanted die rolls for combat and exhaustion from the cold. sometimes the entire 3-4 hr session was this type of gameplay. absolutely no rp at all.
I miss webdm. They’ve opened so much to me on how to play and immerse myself into D&D
Ranger was the first class I ever played. I'm glad you guys finally got around to this class. It's still my go to when I want to play a flexible character
My passive perception picked up the fact the 2 wooden dice in the back keep switching numbers
I personally like the idea of a horizon walker who just happened to get lost among the planes and taught themselves how to recognize these areas and things like that
One of my favorite characters is ranger that hunts flying whales from the deck of an airship. With spells like zephyr strike, jump, and hunter's mark, he launches himself off the airship to attach lines to the sky-whales. As he picked up the skills he needed to efficiently and effectively track and hunt massive, resilient animals, he picked up all of the ranger skills and spells.
The urban ranger that comes to mind is basically the groundskeeper monster slayer that watches over the cemetery. Because this is D&D and a lot of crazy shit and creepy monsters like corpses, or are corpses, or make corpses into monsters, or want parts of the dead and so on.
"Well, last night I had to put Mrs. Henderson to rest for the 4th time... I really need to find the bastard that keeps animating her. Then I had to chase away Bessie again, damn otyugh keeps sneaking up at night to snack on the really ripe ones down on the poor side, you know, where we dump the ones no one has claimed. Can't kill her either, because then I'd just have to burn all the bodies and that's just a waste. But she needs to be gone by morning or it turns into a whole mess with people screaming about the monster and suddenly there are adventurers all over my cemetery hunting for Bessie and looting the graves. We can't have that,, now can we?"
"Give your RP skills a kick in the beasmaster!"
I think there is a typo there, but it would be funny if there was a creature called a beas.
Everytime i need a good class rp breakdown, boom.
I've got a half orc gloomstalker.
He found himself trapped in the underdark after 'things' happened.
He'd just recently made friends with a band of satyrs, and spend a majority of his adolescent life down there before emerging again into civilization when they finally found an exit.
He doesn't enjoy the work per say, but his companions at the time kept a cheery demenor. So the dark never bothered him.
I play him as 'the older big brother you threaten other people with on the playground'
Nice guy. Scary as fuck if you give him a reason to hurt you.
Hey! Long time watcher. Rangers are one of my favorite to RP. Currently have a ranger named Amos Steadystream who is essentially a David Attenborough ranger who runs off to study monster behavior.
I have a Half-Elf (Drow) Ranger. I love him. He's a Hunter Archetype providing DPS and back up heals. Great video guys. New subscriber. I look forward to learning more from you guys
My first campaign character was a Ranger, love this class
My favorite concept of a ranger type character are the Rangers of the book series: Rangers Apprentice. It’s a essentially a no magic environment where the closest it gets is a oathbreaker mind dominates an entire race of what might as well be gnolls. Anyways imagine there’s 50 rangers most around level 10 or so, and say the best of the best are from level 15-20. So essentially 50 Batman’s that work directly under the king. Surrounded by tons of superstition as it’s easier to do their job if they seem mystical. These 50 or so rangers might have among the total group around half as many initiates. The Ranger system is ranked too
Bronze: apprentice/ initiate
Silver: current member of the Corps
Gold: retired/paperwork bound
Oh and imagine them all having a non magical equivalent of the “cloak of elven kind”
First character I ever lost was Tevis, the Ranger, in the basement of Death House. I was brand new to D&D and went for dueling because I didn't think our party (which also featured a rogue) had enough DPS.
I especially loved the segue regarding cosmic stuff towards the end. When I was a kid we just BARELY scatched the surface of stuff like that. I remember when the Immortals Rules came out I was pumped and wanted to try it, but by then my circle of friends was moving on to other stuff. Yer talk there really reminded me how much I would enjoy some Jim Starlin Warlock-esque settings and some Lovecraftian Old One mindfuckery in a game. However in retrospect that's a really tall order for most DM's.
Very thought provoking. Helped me quite a bit while i made my lizardfolk sage ranger.
This is so perfect, I'm starting a ranger character for the first time tomorrow night! Playing a Gloom Stalker, using the Centaur UA that was just released. Super excited, I think they synergize very well.
Stephen Patterson make him a mongol
I was initially going to play into all the tropes of a ranger. Made a wood elf. High DEX. Archery focus. But swarm keeper caught my eye, and we are traveling through a jungle. My initial favored terrain was forest, rainforest to be exact.
My idea for a ranger is a Minotaur who came from a very expansive and rich metropolis that is built into, around and under a mountain. A sort of city state where Minotaurs, Goliaths and bird-like races like Kenku and arrakockera (idek if that's spelled right) along with Dueragar that they've allied with for prosperity. But the city is gone. Something came for this advanced society vibrant with diverse magic and martial ability that was very in tune with nature and decimated it to such a degree that only my pc survived. Who as a horizon walker chased after the extra planer entities that caused the devastation. And when they eventually find their way back. Time has moved much differently. Their city is an aincent ruin overgrown and forgotten. Their race is now feared and hunted by others. So my character is basically a bull person out of time and the view on the world is one that saddens them to see much of civilization has become disillusioned with nature and the respect it deserves and so many people they once shared a home with are treated much the same as his own. With Goliath being ostracized and Kenku being mistrusted. Not to mention that natural thin veils between other planes are much fewer and much farther between than they were.
It's an idea that mightn't work so well in practice but I've come to like the more i think on it.
I wanna invent a dnd tamagotchi that takes care of mechanics behind raising an egg or young animal as a companion
I was hoping for this episode for a few months since I played my first character a ranger in our only campaign, and two days ago he died. Better late than never i guess...
Great vid btw, love the series
Tom de Borst same, not dead yet though haha only 2 sessions in. Lol
F
My DM did away with the Tundra/Desert/etc and simply had Wilderness, Dungeon, Urban.
True it's unimmersive, but when you spend all that time away from your terrain of choice the option you picked turns useless. Spec'ing for Desert due to starting the session there then the entirety of the campaign is spent in Tundra is what happened to one of our games. Hence my DM made that decision.
I'm playing a Dwarf Ranger right now. He's Drizzt style, but obviously not emo. I'm playing him fairly blue collar because that's how I like my dwarves. I took Trade Sheriff background because I think it really fits what I want him to be. He's just a pragmatic dwarf capable of looking after himself out on the road while he tracks down any bandits or undead... harassing dwarven caravans.
I love your content and thirst for your videos every week! It would be cool to see a Mordenkainen's episode!
Id like to say, your thumbnails are awesome
2:40 makes Rangers sound a lot like IT guys at your office!
Holy crap... I just realized with the underdark being the "border below" opens up a fun possibility of the "border above." Now i want to play a ranger that tracks astronomy and goes to counter Star Spawn and such.
The idea of there being a "border above" fascinates me. I can imagine a ranger multiclass with a shaman or scholar type class would be fun to roleplay with this idea in mind. Thank you for sharing.
I came back to this video after a few years, as I've been thinking about the new Weird Wastelands project. I imagine that this conversation was really important to it. :)
As a matter of fact, urban rangers are covered in Ruty Rutenberg's Xanatharis Lost Notes to Everything Else ( Rutenberg is of Maze Arcana fame and is the Lead Designer of said book.) It's a companion book to Xanathar's and has a greatcollection of new subclasses and background and lore stuff. He included the Dragoon and Divine Herald featured in Maze Arcana. You guys should check that out and maybe hit on some of those options. Thanks! Love you guys and all your vids. I lived in Killeen TX for 6 years when my dad was stationed at Ft. Hood. We went to Austin quite a few times and it's an awesome city. I was born in Jax FL but will always consider myself a TEXAN!!! These 2 series ( RPing races as well ) have been my favorite of all your catalog! I hope if I am ever in y'alls neck of the woods, I could meet you two..... or if you ever come to Orlando for some reason.
The rangers in my homebrew setting are split into 4 orders. The order of iron, which patrols and defends the frontiers, the order of oak, which works with druids to defend sacred groves and the like, the order of stone, who are expert surveyors, and direct the building of infrastructure, as well as patrolling roads, and the order of salt, which is essentially the coast guard. The ranger orders are technically outside the direct control of the Dominion's government and nobility, but they work closely with them at times
Is it bad that I've been refreshing RUclips waiting for this video to pop up since yesterday morning?
19:44
Tarzan is a buff Druid circle of Shepard in my opinion.
I kinda feel the Eldritch Knight kinda gives off a more Witcher vibe too
I'll be playing for the second time in my life this thursday and chose a Ranger for it's versatility. I'm not hot for the magical aspect of it, but it's still such an amazing class.
(I still haven't decided if I wanna go for the Hunter or Gloom Stalker subclass, but I guess I'll get to that later).
I've always enjoyed the ranger class, they can be played in so many ways good, shitty, ranged, skirmisher, jack of all trades its always something new. Even a dual wielding Drow ranger is actually fun to play. I tend to prefer the "guy with a trick up his sleeve, or one in his boot or under his hat" type character (Basically Jarlaxle). Give a ranger a portable hole and a cloak of useful items and pow, shenanigans aplenty. If your DM is down with multi classing even better so many little extras you can use in both combat and role play, Just makes the Ranger so easy to play. Now with all the extra sub-classes even more so.
Great episode. Rangers have been a favorite of mine since I started with AD&D 1st edition so long ago. Just one comment though. Can someone please tell Jim Davis it's not lethal to look into the camera more than twice an episode. It's insane how much effort he seems to put into NOT looking into the camera every episode lol.
I need the Wizard video. As a dm I suggest for my characters to watch the videos for their class, and I’ve got a divination wizard who I hope will watch this.
This take on a ranger is heavily influenced by the John Snow character, which is absolutely fine; but there are many other ways to approach rangers :) From Tanis to Drizzt and of course Aragorn, there are many other archetypes to draw from. A fun character to play, and a super insightful presentation of the class. Thank you!!
In a real medieval fantasy game, I love the idea of Rangers being the opposite of Bards. Bards who come from noble courts, who spread the news & song among the towns and villages, who represent the "voice of authority" - versus Rangers who come from the fields and the forests, who may be unwashed and rough, but who won't use a silver tongue to disguise the truth. That's good drama!
Jonathan Herzog Matthew Colville fan here.
the Survivalist is a good Background for a Ranger. also you can be a bounty hunter.
I love the idea of a kobold gloom stalker. :)
And I'll forever see Batman as an urban Ranger. Love this channel!
Great video! I wanted to ask you if you could make another video like this one, talking about how to Rp Artificers. I know they are extremely "new" but I'd like to see your opinions.
Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else has a "Burghal" ranger which is a city ranger class. You should check out that book.
Just imagine combining that class along with Battle-Master, you would have Gobs of ways to exert battlefield control....
I totally agree with Jim on the "cosmic D&D" part. I'm a "big picture" kind of guy too and I'm really looking forward to your review of Mordenkainen's!
We have reviewed it on our podcast on Patreon! Patreon.com/webdm

I like the idea of a ranger that hates or at least dislikes his job. It was forced upon him somehow. So when he gets to leave the wilderness, he gets really excited, because now he can finally take a bath, have a home cooked meal, meet women that aren’t hardened woods folk, etc. he likes wearing comfortable clothes, silks etc that aren’t practical in the wild. Not quite a fop, but grateful for luxury.
I once played a fighter based on Mattias Tannhauser from the book, The Religion. TL;DR is he's been a soldier or mercenary in one form or another since before he was a man, fought under more banners than most men know exist, and how he just wants to do what he wants, make money from it and live in luxury. He always insists on paying for his own room, the best food and drink available, and hired a half-dozen NPCs to drive a carriage for him, cook his meals on the road, clean his armour e.t.c.
Guy's been through a lot in 20 years of fighting, so now he lives it up.
I really need to find someone else to DM so I can play my halfling beastmaster ranger that rides his animal into battle...
Made a centaur hunter with the idea of being a sort of tribal brave and kinda just tearing through groups. Haven't tested it out yet but on paper it seems like it'll work.
What about a Van Helsing arch type for an urban ranger? Monster slayer would fit quite well there.
ErebosDK yeah in D&D Beyond’s video leading up to Xanathar’s Guide release they basically said the Monster Slayer is designed for people who want a Van Hellsing flavored Character.
