But there doesn't seem to be any information on how to respond to microagression: how to defend yourself, or to speak up and stand up

I really appreciate this video. I have had people ask me before... "why aren't you proud of being Colombian" and the truth is, I am. I would love to look more Latina, more like my mother but this is how I was born. My father was German. I look white and enjoy many privileges because of that but it still hurts when people innocently make statements that make me feel that I belong nowhere. I can't change the color of my skin and it wasn't a choice I made.
I feel like the deeper point of this video is to educate us all. People who asked me why I wasn't proud didn't do it with the intent to hurt me but they still did hurt me. We all will make mistakes at some point and put our foot in our mouths. It's not about not making mistakes, it is about doing better as soon as you know better.

A great example will share with my own children. This will provide a better understanding of unjust in one's life that is faced daily by some. Preparing for the effects of our youth furthermore, how it may not affect our youth. Ultimately, preparing our youth with skills and know-how, "Dare to be different".
    Thanks for sharing,

use the south park technique, anytime someone commits a microagression you legally have the right to punch them in the face!

Just because you stay silent doesn't mean that you agree! Absolutely not! I had to deal with this and trust me I didn't agree and yes I was silent because my own boss did this to me !

People only ever ask - what are you? So they know how to treat you. Why else would anyone care where tf someone’s grandparents are from? But if they know you’re Asian- mixed- native whatever it’s like ohhh ok I know what level of respect I can give.

Some of these are just curiosities. I'm pale and have freckles. White bread white and my dad is dark with jet black curly hair. People were always curious how I'm so pale and my dad is so dark. Me too bro me too. I get made fun of for being a ghost while my dad is full blown brown. The fact is my dad is a quarter black and I just ended up getting my pigment from my mom's side. People of all racial backgrounds asked my dad what he is. He was adopted so not even he knew what he was. So does how you feel about the question completely depend on who is asking it?

    Intent counts
people... Especially if you have the intent of policing other peoples behavior. There has to be some point where you just have to overlook the other person's behavior for the sake of expediency if not sanity. Everyone micro aggresses at some point in a day. So if we try to actually apply this theory in the real world in any meaningful way you will find you will spend so much of you time trying to put out fires, if you will, that you won't have time for much else. This is an unattainable goal. And it gives someone else the power over your self conception.

@Brighton Taylor You shouldn't tell jokes like that even if the target population is not present.

Microaggressions deserve micro responses. This is pathetic.

"Where are you from?" annoys the heck out of me. It automatically makes me feel like I'm just a holographic image being projected from another country other than the US when it's asked. I grew up in the US, so I see the United States as my country and my home. It hurts!!!
What's your ethnicity might be a better question...
Mind you, I've been asked "where are you from?" by white and black people.

Are these examples of microaggressions? Where's the malicious intent?
