“I don’t know if they knew what they wanted the father’s figure to be, or to do at the end” I respect your opinion, but I disagree with this statement. SPOILERS AHEAD To me, it’s pretty clear what the father’s role is, and I think that’s the whole point of the movie. He represents the Iranian regime, built on religious values that aren’t inherently bad (at the beginning, he’s depicted as a respectable character with moral values, struggling with the decisions he is forced to make). But once he feels his authority in the family is threatened, he becomes paranoid and tries to repress his daughter’s “rebellious” nature. The family acts as a microcosm of the broader societal issues in Iran. Seen from this perspective, the father’s character development and actions make total sense. And the second half of the film really grabbed me, I found it much more thrilling than the first one, making the almost 3 hours blow by.
That’s what I’m thinking, I’m seeing maybe gladiator or the apprentice sneaking into the top 10, a very out there pick would be challengers but I think that would be the right choice
@@theprime6439 Right now my top 9 predicted in picture are The Brutalist, Anora, Conclave, Sing Sing, Emilia Perez, Dune 2, Nickel Boys, Gladiator, and Blitz. I have a hard time believing these will get in: Saturday Night, A Complete Unknown, Wicked, Joker, Challengers, and A Real Pain. I am tempted to put in The Apprentice but I think that only makes it if no other contenders emerge.
@@purekinema yeah I mostly agree, my top 8 are Brutalist Anora SingSing Conclave Emilia Perez Nickel Boys Dune and blitz, for now I’ve got Gladiator and The Apprentice as apparently they will give it a proper awards push, and like you say I really can’t see Saturday Night getting in but maybe, and Joker 2 yeah the reviews are a bit poor, I think Sing Sing fucked their release date so the brutalist will take directing and S actor and actor
I watched the directors other film "There Is No Evil" at AFI Fest back in 2020, it was crazy that that film was even made because he got sentenced
This is quite a powerful film. Bless the crew.
The scene in the middle of the movie where he wanted to kiss his girls goodnight but ultimately did not was heartbreaking

Sounds like a lone international feature nominee...Not sure what to replace it with in picture and director.
