@@brandonwilliams6119 In Sonic’s case, it was a weird situation. Nintendo was contractually required by SEGA to use Roger Craig Smith as the English voice of Sonic. But since Roger is a unionized actor, Nintendo didn’t want to pay more than the absolute bare minimum. So the solution was to reuse dialogue from Sonic Generations & only pay Roger the necessary residuals. A similar stunt was used for Sora, reusing Haley Joel Osment’s recordings from Dream Drop Distance to appease Disney & their first-right-to-refusal contracts.
Funny enough, they couldn’t find appropriate clips for every voice line from Generations for Sonic. So certain grunts are still voiced by Jason Griffith using his Brawl recordings. But those voice clips were so few & brief that I doubt they raised an eyebrow over at SEGA.

I loved the illustrations of Antony Del Rio and Alecia Hillis! Even in a cartoon style, sometimes characters seem just specific enough to resemble a real person. Additionally, is that the voice of Kirby, Makiko Ohmoto, in the thumbnail? There seems to be a resemblance.
It's important to think about how recording for a game like Super Smash Bros will be different than for a game like Kid Icarus Uprising. Because the lines are shorter, you want to try to achieve a sound that people won't mind hearing over and over and over, maybe thousands of times! That's also another reason not to make lines too long. Characters have long lines in a game like Marvel vs Capcom, and while there is a charm to it, some can definitely find it annoying hearing the same voice clip over and over. That's yet another detail to Smash Bros; there are a lot more "Hyuhs" and "Grrs" for each character than I initially realized, and they alternate randomly during gameplay to keep things fresh. It reminds me of the game "The Witness", where the creator recorded 1000 different footstep sounds since the player would hear them so often.

Here’s a bit of trivia: excluding X (though that one has a bit of in-game lore as to why), the Xenoblade Chronicles’s series iconic use of European VAs comes from how Nintendo of America originally didn’t believe that the original Wii game would succeed here, so they didn’t do any localization for it. But Nintendo of Europe did, and so they were the ones to localize it, voice acting and all. Eventually, thanks to a fan campaign called Operation Rainfall, we ended up getting the game over here a year after the European release. Though it was announced that the game would use NoE’s localization. Though from what I understand, it was well received, especially the voice acting. Since then, Xenoblade’s localizations and VO has been handled by NoE, with NoA only working on X.

Ayy, I finally have some experience in this topic! Although, not for video games. I did voice directing for animated projects in the early 2010's, and it can be both very fun and occasionally frustrating getting good line reads out of people. I can't imagine the scope of getting all those "hurt" and "attack" noises, though.

All this preparation before and during the recording session is important. The refrain I’ve heard a few times is: “if it seems like a game has bad voice acting, it’s more likely bad voice DIRECTION from outside the booth.” For instance the actors weren’t in the same room to react to one another, the actor wasn’t given enough background on the scenario, the director didn’t instruct them for retakes, etc. Or maybe an actor was cast to do a specific accent that is different from their own accent and it comes off as forced.

Another fantastic video from Sakurai! I enjoyed getting an in-depth look at the voice recording process! Even if it only takes a few hours for one person to record, there are 89 fighters in Ultimate with the DLC, which translates to tons of hours just recording, not to mention coordinating those voice actors and their franchise owners to be available in the same time frame. Smash truly is a miracle franchise. :)

VAs are too often underpaid for their work. You see price tags in the $100s/hr and think that exorbitant, but like Sakurai said here, they may only be used for an hour. VAs get paid very little for anything unless they're a main character in a huge game or long running animation project. I get that the cost would strain indies that run close to the margin, but there's no excuse for AAA studios.

While Bowser's always been about roars and grunting dating back to Super Mario 64, DK's had a variety of voice changes through games all the way to DKC Returns and onward.

As someone that’s been interested in doing voice acting for almost a decade now, (even though I have t been anywhere CLOSE to getting to that first step of getting to that goal😅) this was very intriguing to see and was really something I was looking forward to a whole lot. I figured that with the minimum amount of voice acting in the Smash games, it would take less time to get through that in comparison to Kid Icarus: Uprising. But just an hour of voice acting was much less than I expected there!
It was nice to know that some of the games like Kid Icarus had the voice actors and Seiyuu do their recordings together. Honestly feel like that’s been more of a rarity nowadays, be it for animation video games or both. Wish that isn’t the case still.
