Ofc he was! Applejack witnessed her love life pretty late! Spike was a Grown Dragon when both of them got together (CeeJay is the second youngest among my next gen followed by his half sister Golden Delicious)

Why didn't spike and aj not work out of curiosity?
First: they're age gap brought difficulties. Not just was AJ slowly loosing her youth energy but she did not want to hold spike back from his Youth. Second: Spike was to young and immature to be a father and didn't knew how to raise a pony (they ended things in good terms and are still friends)^^
