This is the first video the Smithsonian has made (that I've watched) that is very misleading. Seppala did not own or use Balto, he used Togo. The editing leaves viewers to believe that Seppala was the musher to deliver the serum to Nome with Balto. It was, in fact, another musher who did & that man took Balto to NY & sold all of his huskies to a traveling circus where they were neglected. The Chicago Zoo ended up taking over ownership & care for Balto & the others dogs.

I learned that after the animated movie came out and I got curious. It shocked the heck out of me, that and finding out that it was a relay and not the same length of the Iditarod. Here i was all of a teen girl thinking, wow, and then I learn that sometimes TV is not real.

Seppala did actually own Balto, just didn’t use him in races. Gunnar Kaasen - the guy who used Balto as one of his two leads - was an assistant for Seppala.
Also they ended up in Cleveland Zoo, not Chicago ^^

So 90 miles to five days? I'm confused. If so that's a long time even for the olden days.

I think all the dogs should be commended. They all worked as a team.

Yes all the dogs were heroes which saved many lives. Salute all those. Not single person done it.

    Togo or Balto?

Togo ran around 3 times more (I believe) it was a relay type even to carry the medicine. Togo's team ran the most while Balto's team brought the medicine into the town.

togo ran 296 miles and was the lead dog on seppalas sled, balto was used by another man that only went about thirty miles but balto got all the fame bc he ran the last stretch, togo was unknown to most people, there’s a movie called togo on disney + if you wanna watch it, i would honestly rate the movie 10/10
