Thank you gents for awesome discussion ,it is very necessary to raise this topic because we always have difficulties to convince the parties involving in the projects regarding this issue whether client or contractor sides.
my opinion and experience in the Oil and gas projects is to apply primer in the shop and mid & finish coats in the field (not just even final coat) because it seems that you are saving time by applying all the coats or at least primer and mid coat in the shop but it does not , if your field is ready to erect so that releasing structure from the shop will lead to faster erection as well as the primarily purpose of coat which is protect the steel from corrosion will be achieve by less touch up, missing un coated bare spot during field touch up and damaging which absolutely will happen when transferring the structure to the field ,1000s of touch up points that are very difficult to observe and even to make repair them rather than applying at least 2 uniform coat in the field
