I have a feeling a lot of Persona fans will be disappointed in SMT3. It’s a MUCH different game than any of the Persona series, it’s incredibly hard and somewhat obtuse, and the story/ environments are bare bones. I loved the game back in the day but it’s old school and I have a feeling many won’t know what they’re in for and inevitably complain. Digital Devil Saga would likely jive better with people not used to old school SMT, can’t wait to replay those 2 games again. I spent hundreds of dollars on eBay for them back when they were super rare.

I've been on the "Remaster Nocturne" train for years now, and one of the weird thing about it is that even before this was announced, I was waffling on whether or not Nocturne should have voice acting at all. Like... A lot of the characters are less there to be characters and more there to convey an idea, and there's something about the voiceless text boxes that seem to just fold right into the atmosphere of the original release. It's not a game that has a narrative heavily predicated on the emotions of its cast, y'know?

One of my favorite JRPG's of all time. It is just one of a kind.
Too bad that Atlus really botched this HD Remaster. Honestly, it is more of a glorified HD port than a remaster with some pretty severe performance issues and cut corners. And then there was the whole issue of stuff cut out of the game for the sake of DLC as well as how overpriced it is for what is basically an 18 year old game at a higher resolution. It is just really barebones.

This will be my first time playing SMTIII, I think the overall art direction goes a long way in not making the textures look as old as they are, to me the disappointment is if the really don't patch the sountrack to make it decompressed, it'd be a bummer.

  • @TevorTheThird
    @TevorTheThird 3 года назад

    I'm so excited for Nocturne.
Had it on PS2. Gave up. Did not get it. My bad.
Tragically this led me to miss out on Persona, Digital Devil Saga, and so forth for years and instead play a bunch of much worse RPGs that convinced me I maybe didn't like JRPGs after all and put me off the genre entirety until a few years ago.
Then I rediscovered Atlus on the 3DS and now, well, SMTV is my most anticipated game four or five years running.
But the 3DS spoiled me. I went back to Atlus on the PS3, rebuying Nocturne and other games, but times are different. I loved it! But I didn't have time for super difficult, grindy dungeon crawlers using the old school hard save system. I just can't play games for hours and hours on end anymore. I need to be able to stop at a moment's notice.
So I stuck to the bevy of SMT games on 3DS, amongst other Atlus gems, and have been in love ever since.
But finally my time has come. A version of SMT3 on handheld I can simply put to sleep? That I can play at a long stretch OR twenty minutes at a time?
Which demon did I sell my soul too? They're welcome to it.T
Hopefully they port Digital Devil Saga next. Also great but I have the same issue with it. I need that suspend option. Luckily Atlus hasn't made a SMT game yet they won't rerelease, or remake, so I think that's inevitably really.
And maybe someday SMTV will come out. But I'm happy to wait as long as it takes.

Even if the remaster itself is kinda... mediocre? Go play SMT people. Nocturne is easily one of the best JRPGs I've played, same for SMT IV (which is still stuck in 3DS). These games offer something unique in the JRPG landscape. Challenging difficulty that actually requires strategy and the use of buffs/debuffs, which usually are not important in other series? Check. Unique and post-apocalyptic setting full of rawness, with demons and angels fighting each other? Check. You like games with multiple endings, depending with who you align with? Check. You are kinda tired of JRPG tropes? That's not going to happen with SMT (besides SMT IV: Apocalypse, I guess). You love games with phenomenal soundtracks to accompany the brutal and epic boss fights? Check.
That is just to mention some characteristics, but this series is really worth it. I know it can be kinda intimidating at first, it happened to me as well. SMT needs more support and this year between the remaster of Nocturne and SMT V, there's no better time to jump into the series, specially when Persona has now gained so much attention and brought a lot of eyes towards Atlus.
This has been said a lot of times, but if you have played Persona but not SMT, a good way to describe both is: "In Persona you team up with your friends to kill demons, but in SMT you team up with demons to kill your friends".
I'd suggest start with either Nocturne, because of the remaster and the QoL changes they added, including an easy difficulty option, or Shin Megami Tensei IV, which is a bit more accessible and easier than most entries, but still challenging, specially if it's your first game. IV also has an easy difficulty option, and you can change it anytime, so if you're having a really tough time in a dungeon or you just want to recruit demons without putting you in danger, you can change it to easy, then go back to normal if you want.

I was insanely thirsty for anything proper SMT/Persona for the switch, but damnit if Atlus killed the hype with the absolutely asinine initial pricing for this release. It should be $49 for EVERYTHING (DLC) included in this remaster. Atlus are just flat out being greedy here and banking solely on nostalgia. I don't care if you have any arguments for how they are treating this. Not even Nintendo are this greedy with their remastering ports. Like Mario 3D World +Bowser's Fury or Xenoblade Chronicles: DE, YOU GET EVERYTHING included within that initial asking price.
And for chrissakes, 30FPS locked even on PC while being priced that high?! Not even Persona 4 Golden's Steam release was treated like this.

I agree that the price should be lower, but the dlc is just stuff like money and exp farming. Dante costs money because they don't own him. Merciless difficulty is free.
      I'm fine with the locked 30 fps because it's a stable 30. That's all I really need.

An overpriced and lazy "remaster" of a PS2 game that has separate pay for DLC is your reason to turn on your switch?

Look, I get it, maybe the games on the Switch are not to your liking, but saying it has no games or only ports and remasters is pure BS. Yes they are trying to milk their Wii U games, but they’re just a part of their full line-up.
