    I’m a nurse and it intrigues me why there is such a large bullying culture within nursing.

      Me too! Nurses can be so caring and compassionate to their patients but cruel to each other. Trying to change that!

      Renee Thompson, I've thought by being skilled in the application Maslov's law, one can use this to break down a victim. By interrupting the hierarchy of their needs, you now have a psychological bully on steroids. They might perform good patient care but adversely toxic to others. My question is how can one engage in counter-bully tactics without tarnishing the pure intent I intend to bring to the nurse world?

      @@kevprime Thanks for taking the time to comment and for your thoughtful question. Without self-awareness, we can't expect people to change. It has to start there. So, helping someone to "see" how their behavior has a negative impact is a key component to confronting. Not easy and some people are just not mentally capable of self awareness but that doesn't mean we should try!!!

    If you stick out in any way, especially having high grades, you will be a bully target. I was bullied out of a clinical program I was supposed to graduate from in 2007. I experienced all the various types of bully mechanisms: 1) Slander and nasty, humimiating false gossip, 2) Withholding information necessary to plan the next clincal day 3) Eye rolling and being ridiculed in front of a group 4) Being told that I had mental problems 5) Saying some negative event happened that never really happened 6) Eye rolling. This was over 10 years ago and I am going back in the Fall of 2019 to finally go through another program and graduate. I cannot wait. I feel confident now, no matter what is in store.

      I've seen this many time. Others feel threatened by someone whom they perceive as being "better". It shouldn't be this way!!! I'm so sorry you experienced this level of bullying. We are losing really great people!

      I’m very sorry you went through this. It’s exactly what is happening to me at the moment. I will try to hold strong and throw everything I have into getting the best grades possible. They really do try to make you believe you are worthless with the slander. It blows my mind how everyone eats it up. I’ve realized I have to keep a strong mind and lean on those who love me and want to see me succeed. It’s sad because I really wanted to have good memories of nursing school.

    I don’t agree that most nurse bullies are expert or extremely good at their jobs. In my experience, they may be quite good, but they are often insecure and feel intimidated by those who know as much or more than they do.

    There's also the clinically below average, lazy bully. Putting others down, taking credit for others work is a way of bolstering their fragile self-esteem and hiding their inadequacy from management.

      Yes!! I've seen that too. I wish instead that all nurses would just focus on learning and growing and helping others to do the same!! I never understood how some nurses spent their time and energy squashing others and as you said, taking credit for other people's work!

      @@healthyworkforceinstitute I was targeted by one. Wish I had been more aware of high conflict personality types because reasoning and a 'Let's fix it' approach don't work, as they might with others.

      It sucks it hurts and it's dangerous. You never know who you're dealing with my coworker had thought of suicide because of this! So glad we got her help but for the person who pushed her to a level of such devistation I pray you also get the help you need.

      @@ozwrangler.c Nursing is unfortunately full of dangerous high conflict types with borderline and/or narcissistic personality disorder. Never have I come across a profession with so many frankly disordered people.

    I was being bullied at my job as a nurse aid, it was in the form of people gossiping about me, and gaining up on me as a group where they would take terns verbally jabbing me. It became basically a community thing in the workplace to gossip about me and take jabs. The worst part of the entire thing was it had sexual undertones, made it really creepy and dirty. I quite about 4 months ago, cut contact with everyone involved. And will never step foot in that building again.

      It is so sad this is why we have a nursing and cna shortage on this country. You are right some supervisors are bullies too. I have lived it 1st hand.

    I think it’s important to know how to identify toxic characters in the workplace, because although as a nurse we hope everyone we work with a good people with good intentions, but unfortunately it’s not always like that.

    A year and a half ago, I left inpatient due to a bully and I'm now working in a much better environment in public health dept RN. No such problems here....as of yet. I gave up higher pay of hospital setting for lower pay but do not miss this at all. Bullying must be a mainly hospital thing. I worked in other fields for 30 years before becoming a nurse and had never faced a bullying situation...not since middle school. I was dumbfounded by this. If for some reason this county job doesn't work out, I will probably leave nursing and go back to finance

    My administrator bullied me everyday. She had over 25 years experience and would attack me everyday and attack my character for no reason. She would purposely use assumption and perceptions about me to try to get me in trouble. She was the queen of manipulation. When everyone was around she would compliment me so no one could catch on, and then she would go for my jugular when no one was watching. She always wanted to find something negative about me. She was horrible, and she even humiliated me in front of another nurse and yelling at me.

      @@sweetallyally human resource was involved and did nothing. The president of the company knew and did nothing. I no longer work there. I have God on my side so I hope one day evil people see the light.

    I know bullies from family. And, they show up everywhere. Be prepared. This shows up for me, and, it bothers me. It's worse when people gang together like a cult.

    A co worker bully usually doesn't just bully ,peers or co worker's,but usually bully in general.
    A psychological evaluation should be a requirement for nurses

    So frustrating. Why do people carry on like this. Arent' they ashamed?
    What do you do when the bullying is the silent treatment? I don't know how to stand up to the silent treatment. If somebody was saying something I could confront that but when their tactic is to treat you like you're a ghost, then it's hard to know what to do. Obviously they have plausible deniability.

    This has got to stop! Try to identify key issues and set limits with perpetrators who chronically behave by displacement. Doctor and nurse manager both are culprits makes a workplace a toxic environment. Watch Renee and champion for self and coworkers. She has paved the way! Thanks🙏

    25 years being a target in so many ways for lateral and horizontal workplace violence in nursing from other nurses. whatever years I have left, I intend to dedicate towards the education, presentation and if not completely sabotaged by my own, the management of toxic workplace nurse bullies.

    Hi, I’m a new nurse at a assisted living and work second shift. I think I’m dealing with a bully. The shift I had had no CNAs so the manager was taking over the job so I can focus on my med passes. The next day, the first shift nurse told me she got yelled at by a residents daughter that laundry wasn’t done and they had to redo it all morning. I came in to relieve her and the first shift nurse accused me and blamed me for not getting the laundry done. The next day she still complained and accused me of neglecting the resident assuming I’m okay with wet laundry. My the managers said it isn’t my responsibility to do that part.

      @@healthyworkforceinstitute Yea, I ended up talking to my DON and the care manager to discuss what is going on. They ended up talking to her about it. Next day, I came back and the nurse stopped talking about it. lol

    I believe this bullying flows over to their patients. I have witnessed this in the hospice setting, which is extremely upsetting.

      @@healthyworkforceinstitute I can understand why it happened in my mum's day(she trained in the 60s) when it wasn't a degree course. I think a lot of young women with low (ish) self esteems were drawn to caring as caring for others can be a distraction from looking at your own issues. I'm sure my mum and my aunts would be aghast at the notion that they have any issues. My own mother gives me the silent treatment for months on end though. She's not a nurse any more obviously being in her 70s now. But she and her sisters and some (not all) of my cousins seem to be very domineering but also hyper sensitive. One cousin of mine who is a teacher not a nurse (god help any students who injure her ego) divides people in to two groups. Those above me who can validate me, and those below me with whom any association will reflect badly on me. The old kiss up kick down way of thinking. And the people they kick down hardest to are people who they think of as being a rung beneath them but if they perceive that you do not realise that you are one rung beneath them, then oh the sh1t st0rm will commence. I triggered my cousin last year by correcting her when she had been quoting me but that was not what I had said. I asked her not to say that. And there has followed a silent treatment ever since. My mother and my cousin are both at it! Different reasons of course.

      Also, in what other profession with degree requirements do you still have to clean shit and vomit? Not even the untrained cleaning staff have to clean as much shit and cleaning shit does not exactly raise the self-esteem of most people. That kind of cleaning has always been part of nursing but I think it takes away from nursing being seen as a real profession in way.

      @@rosieposie9564 Hate being a male and not really being able to voice this, but a lot of it is definitely how women interact with each other. Ive been in a male only field and while there was "hazing", that was a means to joining what essentially became a family. The bullying ive witnessed in nursing isnt that. Its almost like its dont for joy or sport lol.

    I work in the ER and the med surge unit was short so they told me i would only be down in ER for the first few hours of the shift and then I was to go upstairs and work on the floor. I got very upset and angry at work. I started complaing in the nurses station. We recently got a new ER manager 2 weeks ago and she is a complete JERK. My argument to her was why do I have to go up to the floor send a different ER nurse then and she said oh no I can't do that because the other nurses refused to go. And then she said you only have a few patients up there it's not hard and I said OK so if it's not hard like I said send the other nurses since it's so easy. She got really red in the face and she got very mad at me, this just happened a day ago or two. Boy she's really upset with me. I loved this job until she arrived. But I honestly think that she's going to try to get rid of me. it hasn't happened yet but I am falling into a severe depression because of this incident.

    ....One thing I hated about nursing wasn't the patient care aspect...No, that gave me fulfillment and satisfaction. I loved taking care of patients...what I hated the most, and somedays dreaded going to work was mingling with these nurses who spends their entire day gossiping, spreading rumors and just getting in the way of effective OBJECTIVE teamwork. I made sure to treat my new training nurses with the very respect I wanted for myself. Luckily, I didn't have a hard time when starting out as a new nurse. My preceptors were amazing...I truly won't be the nurse I am today without their help and dedication....but, not all nurses are like that...Nurses with limited knowledge and skill will compensate by being rude to beginning nurses in a way to exert their dominance....I've seen nurses like this...with associate degrees and 40 years of experience...treating new nurses with any human decency...speaking to them in a condescending tone, as if they were a delinquent child...a recent nurse I precepted left the ICU for this reason...and no nurse graduating from an accredited institution should deserve this after working so hard to graduate....in a prestigious and honorable profession . Nursing shouldn't be about that...its a beautiful profession with a few rotten apples. If you aren't here to make a change, leave before you get burnt out. I'm here to make a change by starting with education. I'm going to one day be in a position of change and I will, mark my words, get rid of these toxic nurses and ancillary staff in every unit...I really look up to Mrs. Thompson and what she has established..sure, the hospital needs to focus on safe staffing ratios, better staff pay, benefits, research, etc...yes. but toxic people get in the way of productivity, efficiency of the unit, and confidence of individual members who have the potential to CONTRIBUTE TO PROACTIVE evidence based treatment. Overall, toxic people within the units lead to greater unit turnover rates....managers shouldn't be afraid to write these people up....and report for sessions of just culture and even, termination. Just because the unit is understaffed, doesn't make it okay to turn a blind eye and resort to negligence. It is YOUR responsibility to rid of lazy, toxic people in your unit, who are leeching off the good energy of others. It affects your other staff members and your patients and it all leads to patient dissatisfaction, unsafe working environment, greater prevalence of iatrogenic infections, as low esteem nurses aren't following infectious control guidelines (sometimes practicing by the books are also frowned upon by these toxic nurses, as they see it as "change" to the unit..) and this. can. lead. to. MORE. COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just hope there is something we can do legally, i.e.) civil suits/litigations, to reprimand these bullies at the workplace? contemporary medicine is so focused on cost efficiency, cost containment, they focus on areas of practice like PRIMARY care as the move toward the future....but they don't understand how toxicity in the workplace can also lead to greater costs...Nurses, including myself, are burnt out...I personally became burnout after the covid pandemic and the influx of critical patients. Our ER was at the epicenter of this virus and taking care of overwhelming amount of patients with limited resources and help...became the straw that broke the camels back....But when things were busy, nurses didn't have time to be negative. We made sure to say one positive thing and words of encouragement while handing off our patients to the next shift. It was when things were easy going and back to routine. This field and discipline is unique. every nurse, person is made beautifully. And everybody has the right to feel that way. You are helping patients and the community. You are an advocate for the less unfortunate, an educator and a health promoter! Is that not honorable enough? Be the change. Go back to school. Be in the position to make that change for your fellow coworkers....just like mrs. rene thompson.

    How can I stop the bullying? They have more experience, and indeed good at what they do. I’m the newbie and easier to let go. I don’t even know how to address this issue, I just take it and it’s causing me to doubt myself and be less efficient. I cry often d/t feeling inferior, demoralized and anxious.

As much as most people don't want to confront, we can no longer use silence as a strategy when dealing with bullying.     Well I've never been a nurse and every fiber of my being will keep me off of that path til the bitter end, but I will just put out there that I do still know what it's like to be bullied in school/the work place, been bullied almost every single time I went into a job either blatantly or behind my back. Being autistic doesn't help me one bit in that regard because I was undiagnosed back then and always thought something is just wrong with me and that's why everyone simply hates me and I'll never know why. "I'm just defective." I also want to point out some awareness that nurses bully their patients as well. Probably the same ones bullying their colleagues. Vile people who shouldn't be anywhere near a hospital let alone a person admitted to the hospital. Can't count how many times in the last year I've seen nurses mistreat and dismiss a patient who is suffering, even fresh out of major intensive life saving surgery, treating patients like drug addicts, like they aren't really feeling the pain they're in, denying them much needed pain management medication, abusing the family members over the phone, and much much more. It's so disturbing, if I were sick and dying, I think I would rather just die at home than go anywhere near a hospital. These abusive nurses just cause more pain, stress, and suffering. If you're a nurse and you can watch a grown man reduced to tears of pain while crying out and writhing in agony, and still have the inhumane ability to say, "You need to quiet down because you're disturbing my other patients", or "Ugh, I've have to listen to you all day and I'm just so over it." or "I don't think you're in pain, I think there's something else going on." (I can go on all night, I have a novel worth of horrible unwarranted comments nurses have made to my spouse as he battled for over a year's worth of excruciating pain and suffering while having hepatic embolizations done on a massive liver tumor, then having multiple tubes surgically placed in his liver and lung to drain dead tumor and abscess fluid build up from out of his body, being abused and berated by these demonic nurses after every single procedure). Over a YEAR of hostile, dismissive, gaslighting, evil nurses making our lives a living nightmare. I couldn't hate a field more than I hate nursing. It makes my blood boil just remembering everything they've done and said to the person care most about whom I thought was going to die any one of those days.

    Halo, can I ask a few questions?
    I am not sure whether i am bullied or not?
    But i felt extremely uncomfortable and sad when i am working with them..
    i m also a new nurse. Under probations.
    Yes, the bullies are good in their jobs but so bad in their personalities. They likes to speak gossips, like to shout at other people.
    I am a junior and surely i made a lot of mistakes, small mistakes and are sometimes forgetful.
    but, it does not mean i need to be shouted, right?
    The senior will always shout at me when i forget something small.
    Last time a nurse said " are ???school teaches u like that?" in a critism way.
    They will talk rudely and have no manners at all.
    But they did not always like that, they sometimes will teach u ( that is when they are in a good mood), but when in stress, they will treat u badly, talk to u badly and all.
    Another time, i just want to use a computer at there, then a nurse came and said "hey this is my computer" then another time she said "move aside" in a rude manner.
    can i ask are these considered being bullied?

      For a behavior to be considered bullying, it has to include a target, it has to be harmful, and it has to be repeated over time. Not all behavior is bullying. Some behavior is just uncivil. But that doesn't make it ok.

    I worked in healthcare for 30 yrs. and saw people bully their way through everything. Mgmt . would never call out the bullies because some of them were black and could do whatever they wanted because of it.

    Some strong performers think they are invaluable to the hospital so they bully. Hospital should show them who's the boss

      Then she isn't your "best" nurse. We have to stop tolerating bad behavior just because someone is good at their job.

      She's good at convincing others of her competence. True competence is humble.

    Shoot, you think nurses are bullies to other staff? Try picking up nursing home patients from rehab as a medic or EMT-B, then you'll know bullying lol. "You call that a secure ETT?!",

      @@healthyworkforceinstitute Im just being goofy/venting. I like the ER nurses a heck of alot more (in general), than the nursing home ones. But, then again, it's a subjective experience
