Sir Seretse Khama seemed such an intelligent and gentle man-- both he and Lady Ruth. I am thoroughly impressed. I hope other videos of them will be uploaded. Thank you. :)

A completely different mindset! This is amazing! Treated so badly but not bitter and ready to build a multi-racial society near Zimbabwean and South African racially discriminatory states of the time! Botswana has always had a mind of her own and on the right side of history!
Thats because they had good leadership to defend itself, first they had Sechele I who defeated the attacking white Boers and later they had Khama III , Sebele I and Bathoen I, the Three Dikgosi, who secured the positions of a protectorate instead of a colony under the Union of South Africa or Southern Rhodesia, bitterly due to the terrible treatment of Blacks in both countries. Essentielly the country wasn't built on racism like their neighbouring countries, and today its one of few democracies in Africa, and if you look at Botswanas history its easily to differiante it from the rest, and that is that they had the opportunity to develope independently without european intervention. They were one of the poorest countries after independent, didn't have schools, roads, health facilities etc, and after that they found diamonds(thank god it was after independence) and built all they have today.
Peter Bradshaw Yes, to be good, leaders need a bit of rebellious streak! Capable of realizing their dream and vision against the odds. He certainly did!

I have only recently heard of Seretse and Ruth Khama,.What a truly amazing piece of history and what a marvellous story about breaking racial stereotypes indeed :)
This is an exciting video clip. It creates some kind of legacy in our history and hearts. Keep the fire burning about this great statesman in the continent of Africa

Not much footage of him. Botswana at the time was way too poor for that with a gdp of USD54 Million. Too bad though he was a gem and I would have liked to see more.
True mona. Just back from the motherland. Reminds me of what my father just teached me. Botswana is no longer dependend of diamonds. Land is free and my country needs me.
I feel Masire and to some extent Mogae tried. Ian was good in his first term but seemed to have fatigued or something. He chose the wrong time to buff up the military complex, I believe he could have given us double digit growth.
We are still enjoying what you did for us SIR, even our great grandchildren will. You were way ahead of your time. Proud Motswana...
He was a great man indeed🇿🇦
Sir Seretse Khama seemed such an intelligent and gentle man-- both he and Lady Ruth. I am thoroughly impressed. I hope other videos of them will be uploaded. Thank you. :)
He did NOT seem to be "an intelligent and gentle man"... He was an intelligent and a gentle person.
They should teach about this guy in American schools, he was better than most of our politicians.
That Guy From Kentucky we got to rethink the whole school sister as far as amerikkka goes...... that school system only teaches one to remember stuff told to them not to be thinkers only followers
They don’t
Wow, our president. Such a great man full of wisdom

Be blessed for sharing these videos, I have just seen this recently, why were we not shown these things in school? This is just great.
Such a mild mannered good looking man. One day he and his wife shall be resurrected to a paradise Earth where politics and bigotry will not be.

@@TheIrbe yeah everything would have gone south if they discovered diamonds before independence.
He was an amazing man and president! He passed away way too young!
From all indications he was a fairly intelligent man. He comes from a line of great leaders. A bit of a rebel.

I agree. His son is not so bad himself.
Peter Bradshaw His son has learnt from his father! He has a good heart! A great leader who will leave an indelible mark in Botswana!

Great state man!im very proud.
Just realized Ian speaks like his father
Love and Service can do wonders
Are there any examples of other African countries borrowing ideas from Botswana to improve their countries?
what for? borrowing what to be specific?
Like how Botswana handles disputes and corruption. Botswana is Africa's least corrupt country. Maybe Nigeria can learn something?
Botswana is not less corrupt, just that media has been silenced to participate freely.
