I adjusted mine and it started bucking on first and second gear shift. I feared the transmission was having trouble but after seeing your video I realized it started after I did the adjustment. Search for a good way to do it and you gave me the answer. I just need to play with it and get the right adjustment. Thank you.
@Cherokee Ronnie. Hey Ronnie, thanks for posting the video. I just bought a 1993 Cherokee last week and not that I've been driving it around much but I did notice that during my 30-40 miles I put on it that the shift points were way too high. I paid attention to the rpm's which were shifting at 2,300 to 2,500, so yep it sounded like the trans was really winding out. I made that adjustment this morning & then started it, let it warm up a bit, then off I went for a 6 mile loop that I go on whenever I've just repaired something on my vehicles. And I have to say, Cool Man, the shift points are a lot better. At a normal acceleration, with or without traffic, my Jeep was shifting at 1,800 to 2,100 and when it went into 4th, it averaged 1,600-1,700 rpm's. Now it's not my 1st jeep Cherokee but since it has been 10 years and taking into consideration it's still new to me, I'm just taking my time with it so I don't fall into any problems from rushing into things. There is not rust on the vehicle at all. Came outta Colorado Springs, Colorado, where it lived since 1993, so being the 3rd owner and it now living in Michigan, automatically lets this Jeep stand out, so I'm glad it's in great condition. Other jeep owners can look at the grille and pretty much guess from what part of the 90's it was made, plus I've gotta get used to the other Jeep Owners who know you gotta wave at any other Jeep on the road. It's a neat experience and glad I subscribed to your channel. Thanks again Ronnie for uploading this video...
Adjust ur brake light switch plunger behind the brake pedal for anyone on here looking for answers to weird tranny issues. Took me years to find it. Btw great video thank you
About two months ago my overdrive in my '96 XJ was acting funny. It would cut out while driving highway speeds and my cruise control would stop. I'd have to pull over and stop, take back off, then overdrive and cruise would work again. Little bit later, same thing would happen. I lubed up the button, adjusted it, now all works great. So now, I'll hit the button with some P.B. Blaster every time I do the oil change to keep that from happening again. Great vid and awesome info. Keep on keeping on bro. OlllllllO
i was this 👌 close to doing a warranty claim on my transmission because it wasn't downshifting. Did this, and it shifted like perfect. i wasn't even expecting it. I just thought it'd fix my pedal height a bit.
Thanks for this ! Was looking into buying an xj so I found your channel helped a lot ! I just got a 88 xj out here in California from an older gentleman it’s spotless he would just haul it with his rv and your videos sure do help me out a lot ! I’m in love with my new xj ! 98 XJ with cruise control. I would adjust and within days needed to do it again. I replaced the entire cable and it was doing great, now I've had to readjust twice in about a month. Any idea? I'm thinking about gluing the thing in place, lol. Thanks in advance.

Jesus, I need to try this. My jeeps been feeling a bit weird with shifting and high rpms, despite new IAC/TPS/CPS. I'd be happy as fuck if it's something so simple.
If your button won't push down a socket that fits inside the button recess when laid over on its side and a channel lock tool will push that button down. then while down move the " nose" out of the housing 1/16 of an inch untill the shift quality is where you like it. Saves a sore finger. Just a gentle squeeze is all it takes.
OK, didn't work right for me...but I did get the problem fixed. Let me explain: I had the exhaust manifold replaced and after it was shifting real high. I sort of freaked out and thought that back in the day I'd have figured they messed with or unhooked the vacuum modulator. I had no idea what direction to go but a few searches found this and others. That button would not move. Took liquid wrench and a sore finger before it moved. I had to really fight it and it was hard to get the adjuster thingy to move...but it did. I should say mine looked a little different ('95 inline 6). It would not adjust however. I lubed and tried and held the button and moved it...thing was almost seized and there was no auto adjusting going to take place here. I watched this closely, and then manually moved the thingy where it looked like it needed to be. To my amazement...because it just didn't really look like it would do anything...it fixed it. Shifts are back where they belong...HOORAY! #jeep #cherokee #shifting #kickdown
My 1994 Jeep cherokee while I’m driving it if I go to floor it, it will downshift too much and hit the rev limiter or if I’m accelerating too fast it will just be bouncing off the rev limiter should I try this to fix it?
I have a 2004 Wrangler TJ 4.0L. I have the throttle cable and the cruise control cables attached to the throttle body but NO TV (kick down). Now with a lot of time and effort I finally saw a blog saying my Jeep doesn't have one. It uses a computer. And with my engine notorious for lagging or upshifting early, the recommendation is turning off the OD when in town. Also I saw an AD for a device that plugs into the computer for the transmission that eliminates this need. Apparently there's about a three second delay between the computer relaying information to the transmission and the throttle body movement. Hence the lag and delay in downshifting when accelerating. What are your thoughts?
How do I adjust it if the plunger doesn’t ratchet back when I step on the throttle? For instance, when I push the plunger back and then I step on the throttle the plunger just stays in place. I have to manually put the plunger back in position.
Hey man, the plastic conmecter on my TV cable is snapped, I have to head back on a 3 hour trip tomorrow and you've been the best resource I've come across so far. Is there any way to replace just the plastic or would I have to go ahead and get that whole part redone?
Hey Ronnie great video, I have a 2000 WJ 4.7 and it started shifting hard from 1-2 and the kickdown from 4 to 2nd is really hard, do you have any idea on were to start? Cheers man!
Thanks for sharing this trick, but that’s just the shifting cable adjust. I’m looking for the throttle cable tightening, my pedal is not as high as i would. Do you have a video for this ?
I recently bought a 2000 jeep grand Cherokee (v8). Noticed it was shifting sluggishly and looked into this tv cable. But every video I find shows a button to adjust it and there is no button on mine. After looking at the cable it is incredibly loose and needs adjusting, I just don't know how.
I have 98 jeep laredo. It's crazy! I've taken to 3 mechanics. Who drive it and tell me there nothing wrong with it! When driving on interstate and it's gets between 60 to 70 miles. The rpm will start revving up. You can see it, And feel it. It doesn't do it when idling. Only between 3rd 4th gear. Can this be same thing? Cable?
Is it possible to make this adjustment too many times? If so, what are the repercussions of doing that? I've been having issues, for about 6 months now, with my 94 XJ automatic shifting either too quick or too late, very erratic overall. I've replaced the TPS and have done this adjustment probably 20-25 times over the coarse of the last 6 mos. Yesterday, it started to not shift at all on the highway. I would press the gas and the RPMs would go up over 3000, but it would not accelerate and I had to coast it into a gas station. Went out and made the TV cable adjustment and then would crank, but not start. Repeated the adjustment 5-6 times and still wouldn't start. Unplugged the TPS and it started right up. Attempted to drive it the 5 miles home, with the TPS unplugged, but the same issue came up with it not shifting or accelerating. Is this what they call "limp mode"? Anyway, I pull over and plug the TPS back and try to start it and this time it started and mysteriously drove and shifted much better, although still not perfectly. Should I be looking at something in the transmission itself at this point? It's full of fluid and it's the stock AW4 tranny. Does any of this sound related to a neutral safety switch problem at all? Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
@@joshnewton1243 , still haven't gotten it worked out. My next step is to change the tranny fluid/filter and inspect the shift solenoids while I'm in there, hopefully in the next week or two. That's about all I have left, so hopefully that fixes this issue.

my jeep doesn't like to stay in overdrive. sometimes the converter doesn't lock up either. I really don't feel like I have an issue with the trans because otherwise it's flawless. mines 2wd. are they built well too?
If you have a check engine light on and a TPS code, that might be your trouble. Mine would not shift to overdrive (wouldn't stay when you touched the gas) until I fixed my TPS

I hope you still monitor these comments. 98 Wrangler 4.0L 3 speed automatic. I do not have the bush button like you do and I can't adjust it by simply pressing the gas pedal. Throttle all the way out and it shifts sluggish and doesn't down shift when trying to pass. Adjust it tighter and it shifts fine, downshifts when accelerating to get on the high way but then shifts into third at about 50mph. I swear it was down shifting even on the highway before I had to replace the cable. Am I too tight or not tight enough? Too easy of a thing to mess with to pay someone to do it.
@@cherokeeronnie When I adjust it where it shifts fine then no. Before it did. However, I have seen several videos now where the guys have the same style cable I do and they have adjusted it differently than your video shows. I broke the clip to the TV cable , should I buy a new one don't really want to , ghetto rig it , or do they sell the clip itself I can put on the end of the cable ?
How could a friend help me with my Jeep Cherokee every time I turn it on, it speeds up too much and then the revolutions go down but it only does so when it's hot
I pushed the button down and pushed it in as far as it would go but when I stepped on the gas pedal nothing happened. It just stayed pushed in all the way.
Mine didn’t either... I lubed it up but still won’t shoot out when I push down on the gas. Does this mean mine is broken? Can you replace these things?

Can I spray a little WD40 on the TV cable where u push it down for adjustment ? thanks big guy, take care.
Yup shouldn’t hurt it
Oily parafin attracts dust
Good info...Thanks CR
Thank you
I hope you still monitor these comments.
Do you have any play in the wire
@@cherokeeronnie When I adjust it where it shifts fine then no. Before it did. However, I have seen several videos now where the guys have the same style cable I do and they have adjusted it differently than your video shows. Maybe because the button allows a "self adjust" to a point. Mine has a clip, where your button is, that has to be removed for adjustment.
what if after putting in if i press the pedal it wont pull it out
I had one like that, extreme long time between shifts hard shifts. Move the center out 1/16" at a time till it shifts like you want.
Tv cable is saying w.o.t. now
My cable is hanging by a thread hoping to change it out
Also, my throttle cable has slack in it. To me it seems too loose. Is there a way to tighten it?
Get a new one.
The attachment points are both outside fairly easy job when cool
What happens wen it doesn't adjust back myin jus stays in throttle pulls cable but it doesn't adjust
Drew
Mine does that too. 95 Grand Cherokee. I have to adjust it every day. Going to replace it
I bought a 93 zj the last owner told me it's a manual automatic transmission meaning you shift from low on up to drive , if you take if in drive it's to lazy and hardly moves
Mine is not extracting back out with the pedal but it does extract out if I do it by hand at the throttle period what the hell does that mean? LOL my shifting is a little bit late at around 3000 - 3300 Doesn't seem to get any better no matter how I adjust the cable
That’s my problem too!, mines not coming back out
I broke the clip to the TV cable , should I buy a new one don't really want to , ghetto rig it , or do they sell the clip itself I can put on the end of the cable ?
Thank you foo.
How could a friend help me with my Jeep Cherokee every time I turn it on, it speeds up too much and then the revolutions go down but it only does so when it's hot

I done it to mine and it seem like it made the shifting worse can’t get out of first gear any idea sir
You ever fix that mines been out sense 2020 can’t bring my self to sell it nor can I figure out what’s up with it won’t shift out of first
what does the tv cable stand for
"Throttle valve"
Randomly this just started. But as soon as I start my jeep the rpms try to red line real fast and have no idea why.
Sounds like your air idle control valve. Ots located on back of throttle body
What do I do if the little plunger doesn’t come out when I hit the gas
Remove and Clean the throttle body
Manually pull it out 1/16" at a time till it shifts like you like it.
I’m one of the dudes that just wot it, gonna try to do it from the actual pedal.
Was trying this till i realized my peddle cable is so stretched out so much it wont even set the other cable to the first click....
That cable system looks just like the one on my 91 f150 AOD
Ren J old ford jeeps xjs and Toyotas are very similar
I pushed the button down and pushed it in as far as it would go but when I stepped on the gas pedal nothing happened. It just stayed pushed in all the way.
Is the button stuck
Mine didn't shoot back out?? Is that ok??
Jackie Carpenter lube it up good. You might have to pull the button up too to get it to stay
Mine didn’t either... I lubed it up but still won’t shoot out when I push down on the gas. Does this mean mine is broken? Can you replace these things?
@@aaronschmittmatzen yes
Mines won’t start after doing this
Don't have button on 99
hi sir
I'm a 2 yrs from 80 woman. I need instructions so why do you talk over half the time? Get organized & get to the point. When I turn on RUclips for instructions I'd like to see the location & the parts. No time for chit chat.
Come now lady, you had time to chit chat with this comment 🌝
You should ask for your money back.
Calm down Karen. 4 years later and I’ll bet you’re really crotchety now.😂
