When I was 10 I was obsessed with tornadoes. This tornado and the Joplin one have always stayed with me for some reason, those two are unforgettable. I can’t believe it’s already been 10 years since this tornado happened.
The growth from 18:30 to 19:30 is insane. Videos like these make me wish I had a storm shelter. This is terrifying.
Lol!
Every tornado alley community rural esp & urban ought to have a safety storm or fall out shelter. Maintained on a reg basis w basic shelter education offered to all residents & tourists.
It went for a stovepipe EF3 to the largest, most violent type of EF5 in less than a minute...
18:18 - "Yeah, uh... we're watching the tornado; it is getting _bigger,_ Gary. This thing is _growing..._ uh, it is a stovepipe all the way to the ground. We've seen several, uh, multiple vortices trying to form and rotate around the storm... uh, this thing has definitely gotten stronger, and picked up in both size and intensity."
the growing is after that much bigger and more insane
One of the greatest single continuous shots on film...ever
There are better continuous shots of tornados than this one. This shot is too far away to be classified as one of the best ever.
@@kenhiett5266 Agree. Wasted my time watching with not much to see...except small shortage from distance! In my opinion they were more interested in running away from than filming. This was a flock!
Not saying best ever! There's plentiful videos out there...hard to see all! If your interested in tormatic videos, then I suggest researching May 22, 2011 Joplin, Mo EF5 up close and personal chilling videos! One in particular 'must see footage' from storm chaser Jeff Piotrowski...following his 'up close footage' experience makes one feel they were there themselves experiencing this spine tingling chill! I am a Joplin EF5 survivor! God bless those 161 who lost their lives and their families left with nothing but memories...may God send them peace of acceptance of 10th anniversary...from the bottom of my ❤ may you all RIP

i bet your house didnt even see 50mph winds..... yet you just wanna feel special

and, again, why didnt you film it? what a flock you are..... running into the basement VS filming the storm (that was probably miles away from your house)
This was actually the best view from a distance that you could get, great pose in not constantly moving around, you stayed focused and watched as long as you could, excellent film work there.
Not only that, but storm chasing in cities is very difficult & potentially extra-dangerous (due to road closures, impassible roads due to flooding & debris, traffic congestion & gridlock, and panicky drivers). Anyone who is an inexperienced chaser could lose their bearings or not see the tornado coming because their view is blocked by trees, buildings & signs, they could get caught in the path of a tornado & discover that they have no escape route or the route they anticipated could be bocked, they could misjudge the speed of the tornado & have it catch up to them, or they could be hit by the huge amount of debris created as a tornado obliterates residential & industrial areas. There are some very experienced & talented storm chasers who avoid chasing in urban environments at all costs.
Oh yes
Knowing that this is the last few minutes of 24 peoples lives including 10 children who were probably terrified makes my heartbreak :( Nature is both so beautiful and destructive, it's scary to think about!
I agree on both points.. tornadoes are both beautiful and deadly..
Unfortunate but very very true

I hate when people spam these stupid emojis on tornado videos. Just type like a normal person
Nice coverage start to finish. I spent part of my life growing up around OKC so your radio was also helpful getting a feel for exactly where the storm was. These are amazing storms out in the middle of nowhere; very sad when they drop down in populated areas.
And to know that 11 days later nearby El Reno would see a tornado twice the size of this one!
El Reno saw a larger tornado, but that one was nowhere near the tragedy this one was.
@@stickboy2672 true
@Mitchell Christie I believe a total of five Storm chasers were killed in the El Reno tornado
@@Justicia007 Four: Tim and Paul Samaras, Carl Young, and local resident Richard Henderson, along with four other people.
@@stickboy2672 I wonder how much destruction el Reno would’ve caused if it had hit the actual city at full strength
Good video, Tom. Thanks for the upload, and leaving your radio up at a good volume to get a good perception of this major weather event. It was very wise of you to maintain safe observation points and not chase this destructive EF-5 tornado. From what I had seen from other videos of this event, automobiles were lifted airborne and tossed around like toys.
This video was an awesome find on my part because I thought I had seen every Moore Tornado video! Fantastic coverage of a monster tornado! Prayers for the lives lost, and the families affected.
Amazing how that thing just exploded in size at about 18:00.
Amazing video and radio as it happened. Great job!!!
While we need better warnings, they were worried about this spot a good half hour before the tornado formed. Good forecasting.
Great point.
What better warnings do you want? They issue them before they form, we have sirens and alerts for radios, phones and TVs.

I was in that tornado, I lost one of my legs due to the tornado. at the time I was in kindergarten. My teacher was teaching us math when it started hailing and raining as hard as I could remember. Of course, None of the kids could focus on math because of the weather. So the teacher let us take a break, And so ALL of the kids ran over to the window to see how bad the weather was. Then the teacher saw a tornado formed cloud and panicked. With the teacher panicked, It scared some of the kids. That's when the room speaker turned on, The principal said there was a tornado coming. That's when ALL of the kids were panicked and started crying. And the teacher took us out to the hallway and we did what we were told. That's when the tornado was coming at US and it was SO close that we were told to go into the bathroom. Every teacher made sure every child was in the bathroom. But it was so crowed getting into the bathroom. I was in the back of the crowd, And all the kids were running even faster as the tornado got closer. I was a slow runner, And I tripped on a peace of paper. I was ALMOST to the bathroom, I got up and started running again when a window hit my leg and cut it open. I also got a big chunk of glass stuck in my leg. One of the remaining crying teachers panicked and came to pick me up and bring me to another part of the school where other kids wouldn't see me, And so I would have more room. Instead of being crowded by TONS of kids with glass in my LEG. I went outside of the school, With one of the teachers. She ran away from the school and tornado. It wasn't far from the school, But far so to the point where the tornado couldn't reach us. The teacher put me on the side of the road looking at my leg. I was screaming crying of the pain. Like after 20 minutes, The teacher that it should be safe to go back to the school. Everyone was outside crying and were doing prayers. On the way to the school, I could see my moms car. I was on the road, Not hit at all. And I saw my mom crying, And that's when I yelled out to her. She ran over to me, And went to go grab me when she saw my leg...She was terrified! She gently picked me up and put me in the car in a comfortable way. She ran over to the teacher and thanked her, Hugging the teacher. My mom asked to go get my sister and bring her to us, My mom wanted to stay with me. And the teacher did so. A few minutes later the teacher came back with my sister.. The car door was open, And she saw my leg. She burst into tears. The teacher also came back with some clean rags and towels, To wipe the blood off of me. After that, My mom rushed me to the hospital. I had to go into surgery right away to get the glass out. But docters realized that it cracked my bone in half and the bone was fully apart and had a big gap between each other. The docter removed my leg. I was in the hospital for a MONTH, Cause the doctors had to figure out if me doing well with no leg was going to help. I no longer go to that school, That was actually my last day going to that school.
I hope you have recovered and enjoying your childhood. This is very well written, and kudos for you to go and share your experience with others.
Hope you get an bionic leg! It may take a while to get the money, but good luck!
Start up a GoFundMe to get some help for the medical expenses. I'm glad you made it out alive.
God bless.
Kindergarten? That would make you 9 years old Miss. Is this your correct age? I am sorry for your loss.
wow tragic story,God bless
Multiple vortices forming, descending and retreating from the back of the mesocyclone before the main tornado formed. Fascinating vantage point of the genesis of the massive tornado which was soon to claim many lives and cause massive destruction. Oklahoma is a perfect tornado factory.
And then multiple vortices forming and retreating into the main vortex as it's wedging out, like an insect extending its rostrum(in the case of the twister, multiple rostrums) to stab its prey and feed.
Texas too. Man it gets crazy out in the plains.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any bigger... Those poor people.
This is fantastic footage of that tornado--I have watched video after video of it, but none has traced its genesis and progress as well as you have done it.

Glad u survived it! Doesn't oklahoma city get bad tornadoes as well?
Yes we do
Yea right, show a video
It must be crazy watching this thing from a safe distance knowing it's absolutely wreaking havoc on people.
What amazes me about these are how the winds keep it formed to perfect curved shape sometimes
I don't understand how people can see that thing coming, and keep driving towards it. Thank you for the professional, and respectful, observation and presentation.
Probably thought it was a rain band. It was so big.
These fellas weren't driving most of the time, but thats the only way you're gunna get good video... I think it would be fun as long as you're far enough way. Imagine it would be pretty exciting
No, they should've been much closer to it.
I was in 5th grade when this happened I live in Florida and I came home from school and saw it ripping through Moore I’m almost 21 now and it still gives me chills today as when it did then
How quickly did that wedge out? Super powerful formation.
Holy smokes, probably first clip I can hear the roar of the tornado so clearly. Now I understand why some say, that it sounds like a monster rolling by.
Talk about being in the right place to record the genesis of this tornado!
That’s was something that I never want to witness again. Terrible day that day. My brother and I were visiting a friend that lived there.
In case anyone is wondering what that thing is in the field. That is an oil well. It is a gravity pump versus a pumpjack style.
The mid-west is beautiful, but terrifying. It's intriguing, though I could never live there.
i think the worst part about living here isn’t even the tornadoes it’s just the fact that you never know what you’re gonna get. a tornado can go from an ef3 to an ef5 in minutes and it’s just terrifying

I was in this tornado, along with the El Reno, and the May 1999. I have severe PTSD- especially from this one here posted, thinking of a newborn strapped to my chest, and being off 19th between Plaza and Briarwood, both schools i went to as kid, is killing my insides, but I always try and prepare myself. We're coming up on Tornado Season, and I'm just... ugh... a nervous wreck. I wish I could post all my pictures under my comment, too.
I couldn't imagine being in one of these monsters let alone three! I'm glad you made it out. I'm also sorry for what you had to go through. My family came close once to being in a tornado, luckily it lifted. We got crazy high winds and did have to take shelter, my daughter was 5 at the time and every since then she has severe anxiety during any storm.
I wish your PTSD will get help and heal.
god bless you guys ...
I was in 7th grade
I remember may 20th I woke up like any other day!!! It was sunny cloudy and windy! And in 3rd hour pe instead of doing exercise we used to go to the campus softball field! And I always used to get out but that day i felt lazy so me and some other friends stayed in the bus! I remember my friend marisol saying' there is tornado watch' so I asked ' what is that? And she said that a tornado might come or maybe no' so we went back to school ' lunch break!! And that day they were selling ice cones and I wanted one but I didn't. So in my 5th hour my esl teacher was in his computer and I came over and said' u want to read it? And I said yes! So that letter was a alert from national weather :( and i remember I was drawing and my crazy friend kept saying ' I hope it hit us it would be fun. Then I remember in 6th hour I went to my special ed teacher and I was like '' are we leaving home? And she said yes: but because of the traffic wtf? And then the loud speaker came on and my secretary mrs curly said " teachers when 2:30 comes take roll and release students: but since I wrote the special ed bus i was lucky to get home '' so I remember when I got to the bus the whole sky was yellow: the outside of okc so I kept thinking this ' if the yellow comes to central Oklahoma we are going to get hit! Thank god no!!!! So I got home and the first thing I was going to do was going to sleep because i was scared so my mom was like " where is that? And I said well its new castle!!! And she answered ' call your dad to see where he is at!! And I called my dads friend and I was like' hey where are you at its because theres an opportunity for tornado. he answer ' don't be scared watch television'' and so I did!!! And then I hunged up and something told me ' u have to be brave and watch the news! So I did and I remember my mom was next to me sleeping and every time I would say ' mom is that how tornadoes form? And would stay' yeah it like its forming from the ground to the sky. and I was so surprised this was my first time I watched something traumatic on tv! Then I went to my room and I stayed there for about 20 minutes and when I got to the living room I saw all the damage. and I was shocked!!! Thats is my story!
So, the... or part of the solution at your school [at that time] was to "take roll [call] and RELEASE the students"? Why the hell would they "release" the students if a tornado is iminent?!!!!? Anyway, I'm glad you weren't hurt or injured... that you made it through that event safely.
And, I'd like to know if your schoolmates and they're families made it through.

Tornados are like celebrities, tons of paparazzi following them around
Funnel forms at 15:30, tornado touches down at 16:42.
You're welcome.
In the beginning it looks like everything is moving one way then when the tornado spawns its like it stops the earth and starts spinning it in the opposite direction. I know that's stupid but that's the thought that went through my mind.
Its like the entire sky came down, idk how this compares to the may 3rd 99 tornado but it's close
Same path at first
This tornado moved over some denser developments in Moore and destroyed more property, but took fewer lives due to a shorter overall track and 13 years of preparedness. 1999 had higher peak wind speeds, comparable only to the 2013 El Reno tornado 11 days after this one (300+ mph). Both tornadoes were rated F5 or EF5.
Less severe in terms of wind and max damage, and less deadly for the reasons already states, but more destructive due to a wider path.
99 was a badder tornado. This one is bad, but 99 was a record breaker. If I can ever find the one video I saw, this guy filmed it from his yard from far away and it was the largest I’ve ever seen on a video. I know el Reno takes that record but it looked absolutely insane. If I find it I’ll come back.

5:42 is when the bear cage begins to drop. I recommend watching the whole video though the way it just progressed from funnel to mile wide blob, to the rope out, And gone.. Back in the sky. Taking over 20 souls with it who just an hour earlier were going about their day never knowing they were in their final minutes..
Thanx for not screaming and yelling and beeping continually due to cursing.
24 people were killed by this tornado ; 212 were injured.
That white car that went by at the 31 min mark. Was that Tim Samaras and the Twistex team? It looks like the same car they were in at El Reno.
Thought the same thing when I saw it. Think it might have been Chevy Cruz though. Twistex was driving a Chevy Cobalt.
Usually the Twistex Team chased in a truck that was equipped for the job, but on that fateful day, one of the regular Twistex Team members was driving the truck elsewhere (I'm not sure why...), and Tim, Paul , and Carl chose to chase in the Chevy Cobalt.
That was definitely a Chevy Cruze, just posting for any potential clarification needs
I think twistex and reed were together this day and not on this storm....even though reed lives in Moore
@Mickey McH the car that went by was a Chevy Cruze.
Go to about 15 minute mark. You might start seeing the tornado forming.
I'm in Moore rn
Yes this was this was a terrible day for us for sure!
But I remember the first F5 tornado in 1999 it was so horrible and devastating they talk about how this tornado is taking the basic same route as the 1999 tornado did
I don't think there was any place in the entire OKC metro that you didn't hear the roar of this tornado.
Don't discount early formations of huge wedge tornadoes like this! Skip to the actual tornado itself, but if you live in tornado alley you do yourself a grave disservice by doing this. Unstable, stormy, tornadic weather behaves unpredictably enough. Huge wedge tornadoes are devastating. Please just watch from start to finish and don't be foolish to skip around!!! I live in Nebraska where these happen.

My grandma was supposed to have stomach surgery that day in California and it never happened until the next day 😥 I don’t think it had anything to do with that tornado but that was my nightmare that day. I’m glad I wasn’t in Moore Oklahoma that day 🙂
🌪
1 30 is that the tornado siren I hear?
Yes
yWhy do all the videos say "not for broadcast/rebroadcast if they get uploaded to youtube? What's the point?
Because many news networks will use videos without asking permission or paying for rights & members of the general public will steal videos and show them on their YT channel without permission or compensation. In both cases, the network/person is making money with someone else's property (the video). In some cases, the video could even end up being used in a documentary or movie. This can mean thousands of dollars of lost revenue for the person who captured the video.
(BTW, there are media brokers out there who specialize in promoting/distributing weather videos to the news networks & collecting fair royalties/fees for the videographer. Even a short video of flooding/hail/severe winds/tornadoes can bring in a tidy sum of money. Unfortunately, most people just give the news networks their video for free, when these networks can easily afford to pay a fair fee for limited broadcast rights.)
I hope this helps...
Derek Baker It helps me. I want to make storm videos if I ever have the opportunity, and want to be paid if my material is sufficient.
Because the trash that works for RUclips won't copyright strike big name mainstream "news" outlets like CNN or ABC when they steal content or play music without permission while copyright striking small creators for things they actually own. Since RUclips is not a moral company, this creator has to cover his rear legally and explicitly state that his videos may not be reused without permission.
bare cage is like 25 mile surround on that bad boy
We don't even have a tornado warning where I live
So the may 3rd tornado had the strongest documented winds on earth. Yet the El Reno tornado was downgraded from EF5 to EF3. The Fujita Scale is fundamentally flawed.. And it's ignorant to assume that the May 3rd tornado was a one-off.. The December 10th 2021 tornado was EF 5 easily and many other tornados that were categorized by a flawed scale.. I'm actually just really grateful to those who are passionate about tornados and risk their lives to get them on tape.
19:12 starts producing EF4 damage 22:43 crosses I44 at EF3 strength 29:56 hits Orr family farm at high end EF4 strength
At what part is EF5 damage?
@@djamo1969 likely around the time and shortly after hitting the Orr family farm. The construction quality of the buildings hit could only warrant EF4 damage but it did several wicked things during that time like launching a 10 ton propane tank over half a mile through the air, scorching the ground pretty deep and leveling businesses in that area. A water tank hit the first elementary schools roof, bending the metal. A lot of storms are strong enough to warrant EF5 damage but don't hit the structures to support it so get a lower rating (example: the monster El Reno tornado)
At 29:56, the video is taken from S Pennsylvania Ave about 1/2 mile north of Indian Hills Rd. The tornado is clearly still west of Pennsylvania Ave, so it could not possibly have been hitting Orr Family Farm at that point. It would travel another mile to Western Ave before striking Orr.
Not to sound unsympathetic but as many times as that area has been destroyed by major tornadoes I'm surprised that anyone chooses to still live there.
It's home....

Did the person who posted this actually shoot the video? I am assuming so since it is marked Not For Rebroadcast. Anyway, whoever did they did a fantastic job. Watching it as it grows and spreads out is really terrifying. So much power and it can change direction and speed up with no warning; whoever it was was pretty brave, (of course all stormchasers have to be a bit nuts as well). Thanks for the upload, I'm glad I live in New Orleans where all we have to worry about are hurricanes and drowning... no 300 mph winds!
That was a factual statement until 2022.. So now it's Hurricanes, Storm Surge, and Tornadoes... I lost my home, in which I was raised and where I raised my daughters thanks in part to Hurricane Laura snapping the 4-5ft diameter pine trees on the east side of my property of which 7 of them used my roof and walls as a landing pad.. then hit by another cat 3 Storm a month later, then a blizzard like snowstorm with lightening and a foot of snow that fell within 4hrs and super-cooled the air to a temperature I never thought I'd ever witness nor experience here I'm Southwestern Louisiana as an 8°F low for 3 consecutive nights... I've never would have imagined what 165mph winds looked liked but I promise you Laura's eyewall was indeed such and it literally wiped everything out. It was or might has well been classified as a 12 Mike wide 155-175 high end EF3 tornado.. I hope and pray that Louisiana is spared from another landfalling storm in 2022. The economy and infrastructures can't handle another direct hit from a Laura/Ida class Storm. The weather patterns here in Louisiana have definitely changed in the last 10 years and there's really no longer and predictability when it comes to what we'll face from season to season anymore.

Why don't house builders build basements down there? I live in Mn and we have seen our fair share of tornados but we have a basement. And y'all have bigger and more frequent storms! Sad, they would save lives!
I agree. I live where tornadoes are like unicorns, nonexistant but hey anything is possible! Yet I have an underground basement and so does every neighbor on my street. I'll never understand why these places just didn't make that mandatory on houses being built there.
Because the soil is heavy with clay. It doesn't drain. You dig a hole, it fills with water.
After watching these tornado videos for a few weeks now, I am convinced that the majority of the people that lost their lives, were out trying to get a look at it instead of getting into a safe place. IMO
Some of them sure, but to me, the saddest deaths are the elderly people who literally can't get out of their homes, due to immobility or sickness. I HATE it when an old person is killed.
Tornadoes arent like hurricanes when you literally get alot of time in advance to leave. Alot less time to prepare for a tornado. Plus if its rain wrapped its almost impossible to see till its too late.
Not true at all. If you didn’t have a storm shelter under ground (which not everyone does or they may have been at a store at the time of the storm without one) then it was unlikely you’d survive.
This wasn’t one of the “go get in the bathroom” tornados. It was you better be underground or your chance of living was extremely slim to none

I thank every power that be that there hasn’t been another Tornado like the one on May 3rd 1999 yet, and hopefully there won’t be one. That one was probably the worst one, with winds up to over 300mph. I still remember hearing about it on the news. That’s when my parents explained them to me, what they do, and how they’re formed. It’s permanently burned into my memory. They intrigue me, but they also terrify me.

I'm sorry I mean no disrespect to no one....But I never want to be in a tornado.i sure don't to see it.. and I don't think there is nothing "beautiful. about three hundred miles winds destroying things and taking.... lives....
