It specifically says "choose 5" so you have to choose 5 of your rearguard to stand and give the power to. Protect clan finishers are made for you to either all out rush to win the match or fail and to have a weaker defense because you overcommitted to finish. Each clan and Gift Marker have a weakness, Bushi made it this way so nothing would be power crept early on, mainly cuz all the clans havent gotten support yet.
no... for effects, you do as much as you can. the only thing that can't be changed in the cost.By your logic, soul saver's dragon effect can only be used if you have a full field, which is just stupid. Another example: dragonic waterfall has a on ride retire. What if the opponent doesn't have any rgs? You cant ride waterfall then? Also, vanguard won't ever use up to again, the wordings got changed hen they rebooted vanguard.

You can. The only case where you can't is when you're putting multiple equip gauge to different units. For example, when you're using Gigarex, if you have to put 1 equip gauge to 2 units, then you can't look at the first one to decide where it goes. You have to put them all before you can look at them once the placing is over.
