When I first moved to LA in the '90s I went to the Barnes and Noble on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills to buy a map. The person at the store handed me one of these instead. It sat in my back seat as my copilot for years.
89, my year! When I got my first car when I was 17, my dad gave me a 2 edition Thomas Guide to keep in the car just in case. It came in handy a couple of times. But mostly people questioned why I had it in the car.
I started using the Thomas Guide in the '60s, it was the best. I still bought them in 70's. I still have them. I will take them over the google GPS anytime. Unfortunately, young people today never learned how to use a map. There is a lot more information on a map, than on the GPS.
As a traveling salesman in LA/OC in the 80s and 90s, I'd get a new one every 2 or 3 years and charge it off on my expense report as an essential business tool.
I have several Thomas Guides and I Love ❤ them! I bought my first one in 1989 when I worked for a messenger delivery company (remember those?). I still use them today. My coworkers think I'm crazy! 😅Thanks for this brief history.
FYI: Every Thomas Guide page has a street on it that only exists on paper…..a clever way they can determine if someone else is fraudulently using their Intellectual Property

Absolutely essential in the 80s and 90s. You were lost- literally!- without one.
I had Thomas Guides for Tucson and Phonix.

Thomas Giude was indispensable back in the day. Kept one until I got my first car with a nav system, but still kept it handy.
Yes!!!!! An absolute necessity back in the 80s. Amazing how far technology has taken us since then.
Who still has a Thomas Brothers book?

I still have a few. Best maps ever...

The Thomas Guide, best use for the pocket behind the front passenger seat. I still got a couple TGs from way back.
Still have a 1991 edition for San Diego!
My son just got his license. I’ve taught him how to use a Thomas Guide.
I used one very helpful
They were great
My parents still have them for both Los Angeles County and Orange County
Never understand the complexity of having so many police forces in 1 city...a suburb is a suburb
What suburb are you talking about?
