These type of solos make you wonder if kurt really was so uneducated musically as he liked to say all the time. Of course he had great ear, he had to since his melodies and chord progressions were so natural but weird at the same time, but one cant just grab a guitar and play a solo which uses all the "right notes" and makes sense in context of the chords, all while having great rhythm and confidence. Just wow.
i cant remember whether it was said in an interview or he wrote it in his diary, but he had a guitar teacher when he first started playing but had to quit after a couple of lessons because his mother couldnt afford them. Those mightve given him some sort of foundation for the absolute basics. This, a great ear and practicing a lot can make wonders
No, he could shred. He was hanging around Toby Vail and Kathleen Hanna when he was getting into punk. They told him he played too good and had to learn how to play shitty.
I think he had to know a little more than he let on but I also think he was very aware of the sound he wanted and didn’t want to over do it, exactly what someone else here said, he was told to play “shittier” and it works I couldn’t imagine a nirvana song that has a shredding solo blasting out of no where
