I'll close on the implied question that Bill asked me earlier: Why don't you accept this wonderful offer? Why wouldn't you like to meet Shakespeare, for example?
I don't know if you really think that when you die you can be corporeally reassembled, and have conversations with authors from previous epochs. It's not necessary that you believe that in Christian theology, and I have to say that it sounds like a complete fairy tale to me. The only reason I'd want to meet Shakespeare, or might even want to, is because I can meet him, any time, because he is immortal in the works he's left behind. If you've read those, meeting the author would almost certainly be a disappointment.
But when Socrates was sentenced to death for his philosophical investigations, and for blasphemy for challenging the gods of the city - and he accepted his death - he did say, well, if we are lucky, perhaps I'll be able to hold conversation with other great thinkers and philosophers and doubters too. In other words the discussion about what is good, what is beautiful, what is noble, what is pure, and what is true could always go on.
Why is that important, why would I like to do that? Because that's the only conversation worth having. And whether it goes on or not after I die, I don't know. But I do know that that's the conversation I want to have while I'm still alive. Which means that to me, the offer of certainty, the offer of complete security, the offer of an impermeable faith that can't give way, is an offer of something not worth having. I want to live my life taking the risk all the time that I don't know anything like enough yet; that I haven't understood enough; that I can't know enough; that I'm always hungrily operating on the margins of a potentially great harvest of future knowledge and wisdom. I wouldn't have it any other way.
And I'd urge you to look at... those people who tell you, at your age, that you're dead till you believe as they do - what a terrible thing to be telling to children! And that you can only live by accepting an absolute authority - don't think of that as a gift. Think of it as a poisoned chalice. Push it aside however tempting it is. Take the risk of thinking for yourself. Much more happiness, truth, beauty, and wisdom will come to you that way.
The most articulate person I have ever heard.
I first heard this about a decade ago, after Hitchens' passing and it would make me sad. Now, about 12 years later my father has too passed away and now this moves me to tears.
My dad was not an Atheist, but I do credit him with moving me down this path where I would read and learn about intellectual giants like Hitchens, Russell, Feynman, etc.
And now my dad has joined them. All my giants gone but never forgotten.
What a genius. Christopher was truly the most interesting thinker I have ever encountered.
Amazing, stronger words than any fear of the unknown ~ Miss you Hitch
While it is understandable people want to remember Hitchens for his views on religion , that was only a small part of his lifes work . I was a fan since his days at the Nation , when he was bringing East Timor , Bosnia , and Kurdistan to public attention . Many of us followed Hitchens out of the hard left into a more rational position...Rest well Hitch .
So true, religion just scratches the surface, and his knowledge just goes on and on and on!! He was an amazing man!
In my humble opinion he was/is one of the smartest men who ever lived.
His words of wisdom, books and brilliant debates will forever enshrined him amongst the giants of reason.
Love 💗 respect and my deepest admiration for Christopher Hitchens, Cheers! 🥃
I’ve heard this so many times over the past decade that I’ve memorized most of it. Always inspiring. Hitch, you’re missed 💗
I love that excerpt. I must have listened to it a few dozen times already but it never fails move me somehow - to make me smile, to take my breath away or even induce the occasional tear.
Hitchens had a lot of great moments, but to give a speech like this, looking mortality and irrationality right in the face and doing it so eloquently - might be his finest hour. Fuck, I miss Hitch.
saanen vaeltaa Me too. Just a simply amazing speech. Hitchens was in touch with authors, poets, and philosophers from thousands of years of human civilization like no one else I've ever seen from this era.
Three of the most beautiful minutes in the history of human thought. Miss you.
Great video, but the music didn't need to be quite so loud.
I am thankful that we have these videos to pass on to our progeny in the hope that fewer members of future generations fall into the theist trap.
Its ironic how hes become immortal through his words
love this.
This is so profound it almost make me weep but if you want to know how intelligent Hitch was you have to listen to his debates. He has a memory and a vast wealth of knowledge that he can deal out like a computer. His acquired knowledge was astounding. The books and lectures, poetry, current events and history will blow your mind. Go ahead and try to keep up, I dare you!
I'm in bits watching this, rip Christopher.
This video always makes my day
When I was a Christian, I spent decades listening to priests speak in church, and in all that time I have never heard a speech more life affirming than what Hitchens has said in this little three minute clip. Thank you for uploading this.
"corporeally reassembled": corporeally - relating to the body. Thank you for the link and for that beautiful remembrance of Christopher Hitchens.
"Corporeally" I think
One of the very few things missing from Hitchen's otherwise masterful use of language and argument throughout the years was a little bit of passion in his speech. I think here however, especially at 2:22, he may have been very aware that his own end was not far off and suddenly his words became urgent and passionate, as though he realised this was one of the last chances he would ever get to persuade, nay implore, people, especially the children in the audience, to make the most of their lives rather than be brainwashed by the "poisoned chalice" of organised religion, as he aptly put it. Great speech.
this was wonderful, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for posting this :)
Fucking beautiful.
Sweet video. Thanks for re-posting
beautiful.
I think I just got Hitchslapped. I have a tear in my eye.
Thanks! What a wordsmith the Hitch!
Well done :)
this makes me sad. Hearing it reminds me of our imminent fatality where we ger to spend it fighting not the idea of a deity but its self righteous imposition. i fear that the rest of my life is best described by the name of the song "how it ends" by devotchka
i cant attach the link for some reason. search christopher hitchens the poison chalice :)
cor·po·re·al/kôrˈpôrēəl/

Of or relating to a person's body, esp. as opposed to their spirit.
Having a body.
:)
watch?v=D6K43WSZrmI Look in the information for a link to the spot where this speech is 2:17:00
Miss his rhetoric so much , puts most podcasters to shame !!
What a wonderful man, very much missed of course some religious fanatic will disagree
I subtitled this using Amara/Univseralsubtitles for the hearing impaired as just a test for myself to see how it works. I have some tweaks to do with the grammar etc, but..
This makes me wonder how much else out there could be captioned for the hearing impaired so they too could experience the atheist/scepticism movement. Most videos don't have any sort of captioning, and there's so many good debates and scenes on youtube.
THANK YOU!
:) love your channel man. Hitchens was the best, and an inspiration..
Thank you
This is a great video!
sound is too loud.
At the :20 - he uses a word ________ reassembled. Can anyone identify that word for me . Thank you
'corporally'
:)
God, I hate the sucky background music in this video! Amazing words by an amazing man though.
i really wish that God is real , so i can go to Hell and meet Christopher Hitchens 😢
;)
Christopher was god !
Stay classy theists
"Tribute to Christopher Hitchens" To a life based on a lie, and ended in eternal tragedy.
A life based on a lie? I don't think he was religious.
Dump Judaism.
Either lose or tone down the music please .
thank you
Christopher Hitchen's ability to articulate his thoughts and relay them was truly a gift to all of us. Damn do I miss this man.
Thanks for writing the quote down, i'm making a poster!
