Hey mj don’t forget when you shut your car off you’re losing almost 2 volts of electrical power to your cb. Most cars while running generate around 14.1 volts. When you shut your car off it drops to battery voltage usually around 12.3 volts. Check it yourself and see what you discover. 73 from Wheel Joe Bridgeport Ct.
As I said before, probably the best mobile antenna ever. Having said that, I would like to have seen the 102" put up against a fiberglass "Skipshooter" brand antenna the same height under the same conditions. Could be interesting! Take care! -882 Hobo NW Pa.
This might sound ridiculous, but me and a pal did A to B test 20 odd years ago , wilson 1000, 102' sirio 300 all the best ant of the day, 20 mile car to car sea path . The 102' was right up there , but the winner was not even a cb ant . Ridiculous as it sounds a 2 metre ham vhf ant wins . Yes this is not a joke the ant was a Diamond nr22l, a 5/8 over 5/8 on 144mhz it just so happens it is very close to the 1/4 wave cb . There is some capacitance making it FAB on cb and 10 metre ham . This Ant is a very very good ant on 2 metre vhf , but it is even bettre on 11/10 metre . I have been using the Diamond nr22l on and off over the last 20 years . The only thing is it is only rated at 100 watts , has a uhf mount and is expensive. But to this day you can still buy them , and yes they still outperform a regular 102' 1/4 wave whip (only just ). As a ham i worked France, Russia/ MM, spain ,England on 28.430 mhz yesterday. If you get a chance to test ,you wont be disappointed, only don't go over 100 w or the small cap might blow . Just my 2c . MM0UDI is my ham call .
I have tried the same antenna on the car but could not get a good swr. But it's working well for you a great video and you see what can be done I have a realistic Navaho base radio and I love it has the proper Mike to but I use a replacement like and keep the original Mike from getting marked
John, I was telling someone in CQDX land about you and your channel just a couple of days ago. I told them I bought my first SSB radio from you in 2018 and to check your channel out. Hopefully they will! You know I always enjoy your range tests! With these results, I may have to try a 102" whip one of these days. :) By the way, we're moving to a new QTH in a few weeks, about 31 miles NW of where we are now. Hoping we can talk some of that short skip again soon!

Truth is, and I know I'm preaching to the choir here, CB, 10m, and 2 meter ham should be far more active than it is. Great radio! I really enjoy older ones. Did you say what wattage the linear was putting out? I'd enjoy seeing a Barefoot version of this test too because the 102" whip is the ultimate mobile antenna (I had one) and it's interesting to see how they perform.
just curious. compare it with a toploaded tunable tip firestick.. same test.. compare distances... and say a 3 or 4 foot trucker whip.. nice to see the results side by side.
I don't understand something about the installation of the roof mount: You isolated the center post, but grounded it anyway via the pigtail on the coax. Why go thru the trouble of drilling an oversized hold to prevent contact with the body, then ground it to the body anyway?
the antenna is not grounded, the coax shield is grounded like it is supposed to be. the center conductor from the coax goes to the antenna, and the shield goes to ground.
If you have double din, you can easily fit a din-sized CB and a single din aftermarket radio both in the same slot. There were also some older CB's made in the 70's that combined all those in a single housing, even including a tape player. I wish you could get something like that today.
What do you have the AM dead key set at on the radio in the Jeep? I have a "Palomar 225" amp, and according to my Radio Shack power meter it is putting out pretty decent power (I can't afford a Bird watt meter) but I can't seem to make any contacts with it. Radio is a completely stock Cobra 25. I have a feeling I'm overdriving the amp.

you need to add 6" inches to the bottom of the 102" inch whip antenna for a total length of 108" inches for proper SWR tune match to a CB radio. 102" inches is the proper length for a 10 meter HAM radio.
