I've listened to both 1/2 and 2/2 perhaps 30X the last several days. I can't get enough. If I "tighten up" anymore I may never walk normal again. One of the best live performances I've even seen. Mr. Bernard Purdie is the greatest! I kept expecting him to break his sticks. Love that hi-hat!
Shout out to whoever was the sound engineer on this date because the sound is flawless and crisp, particularly Bernard's drums. His tone is incredible!
The pure joy of drumming is coming off Bernard Purdie in waves. That is just pure joy. Also from Pancho Morales. Chuck Rainey is one of my bass heroes. This is great.
He (Chuck) kinda did play a solo though. He began the tune with a bass intro. It wasn't as long as the other players solos but that bassline is so classic and he put his personal touch on it.
In this day and age when music has become a declining art and music education is non-existent in schools, we have these virtuosos performing "The Tighten Up," with the skill of the best musicians of the century. People, if you have the chance nowadays to contribute to or support the arts in school, or just go to see the live musicians in person.....please do it!
I got u on that ,bro. These kids nowadays either don't know or don't wanna know anything about the music. Some of them don't even know what a saxophone is.All they know is that self destructive &dehumanizing garbage that they now pass off as music.
Here is the thing; driving to pick up my date this song played on a selection I downloaded some time ago and I had not time to listen yet. Waiting down date's flat Walker's guitar solo kicked in. Date appeared in usual women cirquesque attire at first dates. She walked in and asked me to turn down the music because "that kind of music gives her headache." From that moment for a a couple of hours until few minutes ago I had no other thought in my cranial box than waiting for date to vanish and turn the fuckin' music on at very loud volume, which is what I am doing right now and I urge the feeling to share my happiness with the entire world thanks to these God's. That Pancho Morales interplay with Bernard Purdie though...
Agreed, That was no match for you. 😅 If you cannot feel a great feeling in your soul after listening/seeing this performance, well, (she definately will not be good in bed anyway) 😆
One of the greatest living drummers who has crossed all genres of music, kicks a lot of so called great drummers to the bloody curb, with good steady beats and gives everybody he plays SPACE, something too many drummers just dont know how to to, they think its all about them.
I learned about Bernard Purdie when I watched "The Making Of Aja," the Steely Dan album. Purdie was on some tracks and talked about his "Purdie Shuffle." What an absolute natural genius he is. So fluid and powerful yet constrained in the old school jazz style of not doing to much. A pleasure to watch him.
When you grow up with every one of these musicians and have most of there albums it becomes the soundtrack to you're life and wouldn't have had it any other way. Not to mention tighten up bein one of my all time favourites, Full Respect to the kings.. 10/10
Mark baker : I’ve loved music since I was a boy but since I came across this band of geniuses I can’t get enough of them . I play this daily at least twice a day . Perdie is one master drummer .
What an amazing performance! So much talent on one stage, at one time... Thank you for sharing this with us. Archie Bell would really love this, too, if he hasn't seen it already. On a side note, public schools should never, ever take music out of our schools. For many kids, school is the only place that they have an opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. Kids need to be exposed to REAL music, played by REAL musicians such as Bernard Purdie, Lou Donaldson and all the gentlemen on stage. So much emotion up there... The world would be a better place for so many kids if they were exposed to the arts more frequently and were able to grow up learning the value of something other than a standardized test. Visual arts and music is what kept me in school, and made me enjoy going to begin with. I thank you again for putting this out there so people can continue to appreciate the talent that these musicians have and so graciously shared with the world.
Rachel O'Donnell you said everything that needs to be said.It could not have been stated better and I think you for making this so clear to me. It was not that I was unclear but your statement made it crystal clear to me. Well said , well done.
This is real music with real musicians......such as myself....i play Alto sax on the streets of SF....and also the highest paid musician in SF.....playing the blue Alto sax.....i am glad there was music in my school when i went there from 05 to 06....i graduated in june of 06.....unfortunately, today's society doesn't like real musicians and they like the hip hop which isn't real music.....i am one of the few that can play ant type of music on sax and the piano without reading the sheet music....and a rare 32 yeae old you would not see on the streets every day.....jimmy
I would say this is unbelievable but I am listening to it and it is real. I would have never imagined themoriginal Archie Bell song being turned into the absolute classic of being inthe groove.
My Dad had a huge collection of jazz albums, amongst them was an album released in 1967 on Direction records called "Soul Drums" by Bernard Lee "Pretty"Purdie. I was about 8 years old when I discovered it. I inherited my fathers collection..Sadly "Soul Drums"( one of my all time favourite albums is damaged and I cannot find a copy or CD anyplace to replace it. To me Purdie is a truly gifted drummer. Loved watching this so much. Thanks for posting it.....
thank you utube because they could'nt every songs on the radio and now technology makes thats possible i heard this "live tighten up and played it every time i had the chance i remember aarchie bell and the drells this remake is the bomb the you
This grand-old music is so graceful that it is more refined than most disco, rap, hip-hop, and even some "R&B" music. This old music was made by true talent.
Pancho Morales was already a legend when he was playing with Bernard Perdie in King Curtis' band 40 years ago. Great to see he still has it! They all do! Is this available on a recording anywhere? Because I need to play this again and again and again. And after that, play it again!
That is what I do best with this grand music; play it, until I cannot play it again on RUclips. It is the only place where fine music is stored like money in the vault. This kind of music can even soothe the savage beast.
Bernard is without any doubt one of the most creative improvisation Masters of Funk Groove ever. Love him every clinic I ever attended it was pure Joy entertaining with tons of teaching techniques but You can't teach feel that comes from within and he has the library of congress of Feel and Groove in him.
OMG!!! This is the stuff right here. I don't know why I haven't watched this before. Like I knew Bernard Purdie was an awesome drummer, but I'm blown away by this.
IMHO: The Hammond B 3 is the most soulful organ and thus the major dominant instrument of the past 70 years. It's just got that sound which can't be duplicated by any other means.
I listened to another Purdie track, and it wasn't nearly as good. The difference wasn't Purdie, who was as excellent as ever - it was the other players, who weren't the kind of A-list guys on this session. Everybody on that whole stage has time as good as Bernard's, comes out of the same Sixties soul music thing, and has this kind of feel in their bones. Praise Bernard all you want, he's certainly earned it - but praise the whole band as well, every one of whom absolutely has the right to stand there beside him.
As a man of the 1960's jams best, these guys really put this tighten up to a new level. And all respect to Archie
I once heard a feller say "If this don't light yer fire, yer wood is wet", RUclips recommendations did me a solid!

Hands down one of the best live performances in the history of music.
Agree agreed agree agree agree agree
Exactly!
100 %
Inspires me to play sax and I'm 64. Lol bad boys. Damn
The pure joy of drumming is coming off Bernard Purdie in waves. That is just pure joy.
Also from Pancho Morales. Chuck Rainey is one of my bass heroes. This is great.
Chuck's one of my bass heroes too although I don't really play very much like him. Kid of disappointed Chuck didn't do a solo here though.
He (Chuck) kinda did play a solo though. He began the tune with a bass intro. It wasn't as long as the other players solos but that bassline is so classic and he put his personal touch on it.
Us old schoolers gotta keep this music alive!!!!
30 years ago in Munich. The best live concert I've ever seen in my life

Reply to me: I got out my bass and looped the bassline, then got out my guitar and played the F#Maj7 and the BMaj7....

I take it that was the last date.

Reminds me of a simple and fun time growing up through the 60's and 70's!! Miss those days! ❤👍🙏🏻

Great description 👍
me ... last night
Same!
I've loved the album and the song, Aja, since I first heard it! I did not know about Mr. Purdie and now I have another rabbit hole to dive down 😉
can't listen to Tighten Up 1/1 w/out listening' to Tighten Up 2/2!!!!!! Damn!

There's about 500 years worth of musical brilliance on display here. Wonderful!
Bernard Purdue is an absolute groove master.
IF HE "SNAPPED" ANY HARDER ON THAT SNARE, YOU WOULD HAVE TO STOP MY FEET WITH A CHAIN SAW
Mark baker : I’ve loved music since I was a boy but since I came across this band of geniuses I can’t get enough of them . I play this daily at least twice a day . Perdie is one master drummer .
The organ solo starts off small, and then explodes into a giant flaming ball of happiness.
This is some kind of BADD ASS music I think everybody should hear , I was smiling all the way through !!!!
Chuck R-A-I-N-E-Y
Bernard P-U-R-D-I-E
Thank you for these two great posts!
Love that Hammond Organ.
Bernard Purdie groovemaster :) His accompaignment of the conga-solo is wonderful! Leaving space for his band mate. ;)
Videos like this should be watched every day its what life should be all about

Purdie
That snare drum is gettin' WORKED!!!!
The snare is getting played not banged like so many rock bands.

Purdie is the drumming GOAT. No one has better chops. So sweet
New Pancho Morales Fan here! He does not disappoint!
Perdie has so much SOUL in his rhythms. Nobody quite like him. Award the man a Nobel Peace Prize. Carve him into Mount Rushmore!

You have got to bow down in reverence to this epic performance.
Pure joy in Bernie’s hands, feet, body and soul. Grrrooooovin!
I literally only learned of Mr. Perdie today (thru Steely Dan). Wow!
One of my faves from way back when rhythm was actually music. Wasn't about showcasing personalities, just the best collaborations.
Man, these musicians are tight!
The highest point of music by the most seasoned players on the earth... keeps me smiling!
