- This video explains the new 'superspeed' USB 3.0 standard for connecting things to computers. It is produced and presented by Christopher Barnatt of ExplainingComputers.com, and Associate Professor of Computing & Future Studies in Nottingham University Business School.
I like the way he 'teaches' the subject.. crystal clear..like in a lecturer would do..
Thank you for a very clear explanation. Not all your listeners will have English as a first language and so I am sure they too are grateful for your speaking clearly. I am English, by the way.
The only reason i know this video isn't straight from the 90's is because he's talking about usb 3
i was thinking the exact same thing lmao!
Yes...I was thinking of the 80s looking from his hairdo, then again..he was talking about USB3.0
Hahahahahahha
🤣
XD
It's been 6 years : still using USB 2.0
Lots of us are still using it. But all new PCs come with USB 3.0 (or 3.1) ports now. :)
When is your next video for USB-C ?
I made an update featuring the USB connector a few months ago: t is here: ruclips.net/video/d42xoN40W7g/видео.html
officeworks here in australia still heavily stocks usb2 memory sticks, granted there cheap... but 6 years on from this video you'd think it would of moved on.
I think USB C will take over. I bet in 5 years we'll all use USB-c
I love your videos man. They are simple and straight to the point. No "channel advertise" annotations, you actually make the annotations very useful.
Watching in December 2020! Chris you haven't changed much but the channel has certainly improved over the decade. No sign of Stanley the knife opening that tricky usb card back then!
if you dont like his content, simply dont watch his channel? whats shit talking for? and ExplainingComputers keep up the great work! dont let the haters bring you down

LOL
I have this suspicion he could drink me under the table.
He does "hope to talk to you again very soon..."
so if am a spy stealing data and time is of the essence, I better make sure I'm using USB 3.0 Gotcha!
yeah but what if they have only usb 2.0 ports... !!!

Keep going EC.
Well, it's been 5 years and what he said stands true. If you buy a new laptop today, chances are it has at least 1 usb 3.0 slot. Fuck yeah, technology!
It is 2020 and I realized that my favorite computer only has USB 2.0 ports. I am considering adding a USB 3.0 adapter for backing up to my passport drive. Last time took almost all night to backup my files. Thanks for this article to give me stats to justify the upgrade.
If you back up a lot of data to an external drive, there is no better upgrade than a USB 3.0 card.
2:36 the struggle is real...
Chris Tran lmao
Nah it looked staged
Thanks for this kind feedback! :) I did the opening animation (in a previous life I used to produce painted-cell cartoon animation for the BBC). Checkout the "Big Data" video here for more shots of the "metal people" in the intro.
Your kids are gonna love it. - Marty McFly
I just remembered the term USB 3.0, looked for your video and realized that I have two USB 3.0 sockets at the back of my laptop. Thanks for the video showing the socket, it gave me relief knowing that I have USB 3.0 sockets.
"However"!
Omfg
i am a hardware technician from India Just today i saw your video , excellent presentation
, thank you so much
Great explanation still in 2018
I wanted to find the difference in cable structure of usb 2 and 3 and got exactly that, thanks man.
Thanks for that. Finally understand what that "SS" means on my USB 3.0 plug.
MyProximity Secret service.

The white cables lead to a backing plate that has two USB 2.0 and two firewire ports on it. They came with the motherboard, and plug into its internal USB and a firewire ports. Not all motherboards have (many of ) these kinds of socket, which is why you may not have any sockets to plug in the leads for front ports that came with your case.
Just watched this video after ordering an external hard-drive (1 TB. A TERAbyte?!?!? I went to a super nerdy engineering college and this was almost unfathomable back in the day to us geeks). Mr. Barnatt is and was sooooo ahead of his time. Wow. "In five years..." That was 2010! It's 2020, 9 months into the 'Rona apocalypse, and when my new fancy e.h.d. wouldn't "work" with my 3 year old laptop, I found this video. Mr. Barnett, I wish I had stumbled upon you earlier. You are a prophet sage of technomania! :-D
Loud and clear explanations. Thanks.
That is a great idea -- I will add it to my growing list of requests! :-)
Very clear presentation, right speed of words and easy listening. Thanks.
this reminds me of the old bbc educational programs we used to watch in primary school lol
jetski Dex haha I know exactly what you're talking about. 80s educational programmes lol
How bang on this is...my PC comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports and 5 or 6 UBS 2.0 ports.
I'm enjoying these 'explaining computers.com' series. I'm a technology fan and now and again I need to be familiarised with details that 'ec' provides. Thumbs up!
Interesting. I have worked as a professional speaker/lecturer for over 20 years and won numerous awards for he same (and also appear regularly on the radio). Pace is a subjective issue -- some people like how I present on video -- where I am very aware that the info needs to be clear -- and some don't. I also had serious surgical damage to my vocal chords several years ago (I could not speak at all for 3 months) and this inevitably impacts my delivery now.
you can tell he's a real computer science professor, I almost fell asleep as soon as he started talking lol
Still using it in 2023 😁✌🏻🔝
As always, great explanation, if you know him, you’re like the Scotty Kilmer of computers 🤓 👍🏻
These are the kind of videos that are slow enough for my mum to understand.
_October 2021_ : *11 years already??!!* OMG how old am I? 😮
I remember when I stumbled upon it for the first time it was the best video to explain everything I wanted to know about USB 3.0
Thanks Dad. You always help me.
Wtf 😂
Great Tutorial. I had no idea on how USB 3.0 was different from USB 2.0
Dude, you is one bad mamma jamma. Clearly within that cool exterior beats the heart of a lion.
Thanks for all the good information.
Thanks for a simple plain quiet well made informative video.
No music and no time wasting.
Please make more covering pc technology.
Looks like he's stuck in the 1980's Beatle's Universe with Dr Pepper.
You are like folks that look at the weatherman during the forcast. So they started using weatherwomen to distract people.
Mr. Barnatt, I admire your vocabulary.
when he says "talk to you again." it sounds like he's saying "torture you again" xD
Lol
Your presentation hasn't changed much in 9 years. If anything, your speech patterns have become livelier. What an absolute mensch.
Never change. You are completely zen and comfy.
3:58
I'm watching in 2016. Six years later. I have never touched a USB 3.0 related thing in my life.
Osauru Vilether Nope. All the ones that I know are all USB 2.0
good for you mate
Yeah agree
are you sure? most hard disks actually come as usb 3.0 lol same with usb sticks
I'm pretty sure.
Thanks for this comment. :) The way I say the website name is quite deliberate to make it memorable. When I started this RUclips channel, the intention was to promote the website (and then its ExplainingTheFuture sister site on my other channel). But now, the RUclips channels are more popular than the websites -- but the name has kind of become my catchphrase, so I keep saying it the same, distinctive way! More videos soon. :)
USB 3.0 is still not that common in 2013..can't believe it
Chuck Norris still not that common in 2018 still lol
Whoa, did not know you were/still is a professor? That makes so much more sense now.
"Within five years everyone will use usb 3."
It's five years later and I still have never seen a usb 3 device, and rarely hear of them.
Where u at, future tech?
+Wyntrr_End We clearly see different devices! I have not seen a new PC or laptop for years that does not have USB 3.0, and indeed many tablets and smartphones now have micro USB 3.0 connectors. Most external hard drives are USB 3.0, as are many USB keys.
+Wyntrr_End Dude as your comment shows that was posted three weeks ago.. I wonder where do you live cause USB 3.0 is wildy available may you have missed the part where He explained the color difference.. between the two...
FYI .. start looking for USB-C as the new upcoming data port that also carry enough juice also to power your laptop.
+Jitu Kali You go to Fry's Electronics and you see many things with USB3.0.
+Wyntrr_End maybie its because you live in a jungle
My laptop is from 2012 and i got 2 usb 3 ports. So definitely you live in a jungle. :)
Thank you Christopher that was a very clear explanation of everything. I appreciate your good work.
You are like the Christopher Walken of computer world. You look and even talk like him. Are you somehow related to him? A cousin? A secret child? I CRAVE FOR ANSWERS!
Yes, you are right. It is always safest to have at least one USB 2.0 port on a PC -- like most laptops and desktops still do (aside from some Macs, apparently!),
I was 4 when this video was released, and still not everyone is using usb 3.0 😂 my only usb 3.0 device is an 1 terrabyte harddisk
I was 2
I was a sperm cell
I'm a computer tech and still find your videos very informative, 2 thumbs up.
He was right it's 5 years
Except usb 3s are terrible
I agree. Over time the delivery of media has gone faster and faster (if with no evidence that people are actually learning any more). But we cannot go on speeding up (and skimming detail) forever. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you Sir for the info, I appreciate it! :-)
That was a simple and clear information and well explained video of distinctive between the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0
he looks like he came from the 1980s
Because he did!
This guy's delivery is a delightful, 100% genuine, Open-University-classic.
BBC documentary man ...LOL
Probably it was the last time he was outside.
He is my hero
Looks are not what is important here. The content explained is the key element. I don't understand why people are so bent on creating negativity.
This is a very good point. The initial plans for USB 3.0 did use a fibre optic cable to achieve the increased speed (in combination with the legacy wiring), but sadly this did not make it to the final version.
I'm just glad Apple wasn't behind the USB 2.0 to 3.0 evolutionary leap, otherwise we'd all be buying a fucking adapter from Apple to connect our USB 2.0 devices to the new USB 3.0 ports, probably would've been called Thunder or some shit.
Leonel Ventura OMG ROFL LOOOOL. Apple Thunder would have 30 secs of unbelievable advertising during the Super Bowl, can you imagine all for a cable.
Thanks for the explination, had no idea how the connections were different.
since I got a usb3 mobo I haven't bothered putting any HDD's in my PC other than the small SSD. Connecting usb HDD docks are just easier! hooray for usb3! (although usb2 only connections on tv's and dvd players are everywhere GGRRRR!)
They have a wider connector for this -- like an existing mini or micro port, but with another connector alongside it. I had not physically got hold of one of these when I made the video.
WOW the intro is so 80's!!! awesome!!
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky...
Soltra45 haha he just looks like john lennon...
Gilad Doitsh not even close
USB 3 has been slow to develop but lately I notice it is picking up steam. More devices are appearing. Good to see How effective the PCI USB 3 add-on card is in reality on an older machine. Good video. Thanks!
How much did he speak 'however'?
Nice point! :-) USB 3.0 gains bandwidth over USB 2.0 by being able to send and receive data at the same time -- which as you say is sort of parallel . . . But the name is not going to change!
Is that windows 95? Come on guys you need to step up your game.
No, it is not Windows 95! :) This is a 2010 video, and at the time I was running Windows XP with a custom skin based on the "Classic" one.
ExplainingComputers Is that windows XP? Come on guys you need to step up your game.
ExplainingComputers
Better than Vista. :3
why not linux?
Because, on this PC, I rely on Windows software like LightWave, After Effects and Premiere Pro. Sorry. :)
I utterly agree. I now almost always back-up via USB 3.0 -- even when the drive has a SATA connector. USB 3.0 just wins on easy of use, wide compatability, etc. As you say, the limit is now drive speed. Getting anything to sustainabily shift more than about 4GB a minute between spinning disks remains a major challenge.
If he talked any slower I might have fell asleep lol
this guy is from another era
However! It was educational. :)
Dumb Down yes.. my thoughts, exactly
Greg : Your profile make me in lust
yeah...................no.............kidding......!
I guess there is a generational change gap here. Speaking as a mid twenty year old guy I personally think my generation need to slow down since we are naturally fast. Any how I appreciate that instructional video. It is most helpful for me. Thanks!
Is he the same nigga from the 12 year-old computer genius from 1984 video?
Yes, a USB 3.0 device would work (at USB 2.0 speeds) if plugged into a USB 2.0 port. However, for many devices (depending on the connector) you would need to use a USB 2.0 cable, not the USB 3.0 cable usually used with the device.
The person in the video is still replying to the peoples issues
Is this real u or your soul
Real. With soul.
@@ExplainingComputers 😂
Yes, you are correct -- the limitation would be the write speed of the SSD. But it should be very fast indeed. :)
however
Excellent video: clear, slower, understandable.
Thanks.
Is he using fucking windows 98?
In real-world situations, from a fast disk to a fast disk, I find that I can copy about 4 or 5GB of files a minute over a USB 3.0 connection. I regularly back up many GB of video files, so the extra speed is very useful for this.
That intro gave me cancer.
the way he talks gave me syphilis
Ben Zimmerman lmao
His *LEGO*® inspired hair made my legs fall off.
***** Don't worry, their LEGO® so you can just put them right back on.
lmao
I really appreciate the way you try to speak as much clearly as possible so that anyone can understand ;-)
omg I feel like i'm 50
The Chaotic One im 50 and dont feel like you lol
The caotic one I don't why people like you are born with these shit minds, can't you appreciate a man trying to be simple with good explanation which is on point and you are looking at his age and video making style, you came for knowledge here so just take that
i dont know why but i feel good when i watch this man videos
However....
It's like a person from the 1970's explaining (very well) modern day technology
that intro gave me cancer
I'm already dead. Speaking out of after life. This still gives me nightmares.
scary stuff
obama care should take care of that
yes
well presented and important information
is this Australian accent or just creepy accent? lol
It is a British Accent
Abdullah Ijaz
So. . . A creepy accent?
I am American / Puerto-Rican married to a British woman almost four decades and I can tell you for nothing that she nor many others with whom I am acquainted speak like this :-o LOL! I think they call this 'the Queen's English'.
Yes it will work at USB 2.0 speeds. Though you may need a different cable than the one it comes with (any USB 2.0 cable with the right connectors will be fine).
Pure Geek presenter as well as an A+ job of explaining the subject. I can't praise this video highly enough.
You have to have a USB 3.0 port to get USB 3.0 speeds (although with the right cables you can connect USB 3.0 devices to USB 2.0 ports). So you will need new hardware of some kind to get speed increases.
I had no idea about the extra contacts on the plug and I've been using USB 3.0 for 5 years...
USB 3.0 ports are indeed currently more expensive to include on a motherboard, hence we are getting computers with a mix of USB 3.0 and 2.0 as you say. (The same thing happened when USB 2.0 first came out and we got computers with a mix of 1.1 and 2.0). In time I imagine we will get all USB 3.0. Though for connecting keyboards, mice and so on, USB 3.0 is overkill and not needed, so it could be some time before we get computers with no USB 2.0 ports.
Very interesting to watch, and easy to understand. Thanks for posting.
Very helpful, never realised that most the USB's in my laptop where 3.0's. Get in!
Yes, if you buy a USB 3.0 drive you will be able to use it both on your laptop and newer PC. It will work at USB 2.0 speeds on your laptop, but USB 3.0 speeds on your newer PC. So you will get speed benefits at least some of the time! :)
You can plug a USB 3.0 memory stick into a USB 2.0 port and it should work OK -- if only at USB 2.0 speeds of course. This said, some USB 3.0 memory sticks have in reviews been shown to outperform most USB 2.0 sticks even when plugged into USB 2.0 sockets.
Great video. Only this year did I upgrade to USB 3 because I wasn't sure that my motherboard could handle USB 3, but I have no problems with it. I will switch to USB 3.1 but I have to wait when smartphones and other devices will use this standard.
Very informative, thank you!
You can plug USB 3.0 devices into USB 2.0 ports (using a USB 2.0 cable) to run at USB 2.0 speeds.
