- The ribbon tweeter in Quad’s S-1 and S-2 bookshelf speakers helps give them their detailed, smooth sound. Combined with their Kevlar woofer, these speakers really deliver.
Our speaker writer (and big audiophile) Steve was impressed with the Quad S-1 and S-2 speakers, and he is not one to throw out praise lightly. As he explains it, the ribbon tweeter is key to delivering the amazingly clear sound he experienced while trying them out.
A ribbon tweeter is a simpler design compared to a traditional dome tweeter in that it does not require a voice coil. The amplifier drives the tweeter directly, resulting in increased detail and resolution.

I've had the S2s in my system for a year. Cracking speakers with a excellent imaging and a big open soundstage when placed on heavy 24" stands. Excellent build quality with a superb veneer. I'm a bit baffled how they don't appear to be very popular.
The S-2 are the soundstage kings. Magnificent value at only 599 GBP.
Had some S2's in my system for a couple of years and I love them. Big and lush, plenty of bass for a speaker with such a small footprint. Cyrus One amp drives them.
Still have my Quad S2's but they're now partnered with a Naim Uniti Atom, all I can say is wow! Sounds phenomenal, seriously phenomenal.
@@BongEyedBastard Is that because they make up for the highs while the Naim deals with the lows. ?
@@paulgillard5094 not sure Paul, but the system sounds 👌
Good introduction. Listened to a pair of S-2s in the store and was really impressed by their soundstage and the detail without harshness from the tweeters. No problem with bass either. To my ear they had a clear edge compared to the numerous other similarly sized speakers being demonstrated. Their build quality looked excellent. Y
We were very impressed when they came to HQ - and we listen to ALOT of speakers
What's the difference between S1 and S2? Only bass extension and sensitivity? How about other qualities? If I already have a good sub, would S1 be the best option? (small-ish room)
Also, do these work well placed very near to a wall?
Exactly what I want to know.
Great question I also would like to know the answer
I think you'll find the s2 is slightly bigger and has a larger bass driver
Anyone listened to Z2 ? Able to give some reviews ? Thanks
Hi I have the Artera Solus & was looking at a match re one of the above. I was hoping this review might have informed on the bass extension (as I know the tweeters in both are identical) At £100 extra is it worth going for the S2 for a bigger soundstage? Or will the S1 suffice in that area given what you said
You gain about 10Hz more bass extension ( 58 Hz to 48 Hz) going from the S-1 to the S-2.
Please compare b&w 606 s2
Will the Quad S2's every come back in stock at Crutchfield?
Unfortunately, those have been discontinued with us.
Thanks for the review.... could you recommend a good stand for these?
How tall do you want the stands?
@@crutchfield Hi, 50-60cm ideally... reason I ask is due to the profile of the speaker cabinets not being square or rectangular as such.
Thanks 👍
These Pangea stands would be a good fit:

@@crutchfield thank you
How are the S2s with the Naim Uniti Atom? Thanks
There’s another comment thread below that talks about this question
Thanks
Is there any chance the Quad S1 sounds boxy due to its small size??
The feedback we got seemed to indicate they seemed to perform very well for the size and didn't leave a bad impression. However, we no longer offer these speakers. We do have others to choose from and advisors that can help give a personal recommendation on a set. Here's how to reach us for this help:

Why did Crutchfield stop carrying the QUAD Speaker line?
They are go good brand! Just didn't seem to resonate with our customer base so we decided to part ways and free up the space in our warehouse.
Review would be better if background conversation was not recorded.
Why did Crutchfield stop handling Quad speakers.
Hey Roy. I've reached out to our buyer for that type of gear to see if he has any comments on it. We often bring products in and out of the mix. If there is something specific from Quad you are looking for it might be possible for us to special order it. You'll want to give one of our Product Advisors a call so they can check on that for you.
"Discontinued item". So... what's the successor?
z-1 and z-2 i’d assume
I have the S-1s with a Quad Arterus Solus Play. I dislike the sound. It is woolly and dull. I shall replace them with Dali Oberon I think.

Omg... so much chatter... Just connect the speakers to your amp and record the sound of both! Why so much useless chatter?
