Jade Cocoon Nostalgic Review

  • Jade Cocoon is an RPG for the PS1. It's most like Pokemon but was inevitably pitted against Final Fantasy at the time, thanks to its pre-rendered backgrounds and that it was an RPG for the PS1.
Featured a pretty cool monster-blending system and one of the best soundtracks of any game ever. Fun fact: my sister got this game, and my parents encouraged it since they enjoyed the music so much.

Holy Shit! This game was the shit when I was a kid! I remember when I found it on a demo disc from some game magazine. I played the demo way too much :D making my own creatures. And then when I got the full game for christmas present I was so happy! Thanks for this nostalgia trip Philip. Subbed!

I bought Jade Cocoon for $50 not long ago just so I could show my friend what it's like.
I play this game for its atmosphere and treat it like a hidden studio ghibli game that i mention occasionally.
    I'll cherish it forever.

You made the point, but I'll reiterate it. Say what you want about this game, but it's been almost 18 years since I've played this for the first time and that music still sticks with me. Best video game soundtrack I've ever heard, personally.

Bruh, I went through the game and struggled on every boss because I was underleveled. Eventually I beat them through determination.
But nothing prepared me for the hardest boss of all, that can be only be fought in the VS Mode.

Jade Cocoon was great. I haven't played it in probably 15 years, and I've been wondering if it still holds up today and had some doubts. Such a strange and beautiful game. It has a real air of anxiety and uncertainty to it, especially towards the end. Only in the forests and dungeons does this anxiety fade, as the melancholy music changes to more ambient sounds if I remember correctly, though they may have been tense in their own right.
I think I'll play it again some time. Thanks for the reminder.
Jade Cocoon 2 didn't pull me in back when it came out, as it was just too different. But it may be deserving of another chance as well.

I remembered playing it on a PS1 demo disc and bought it this year. Amazing experience. Sure, it has some rough edges, but it has such a unique charm and it had some pretty cool game mechanics for its time. It’s fun to merge the monsters and see them GROW as they level up. I only noticed that by the end of the game!

  • @quibster

Similarly one of the most memorable RPG's for me on the PS1 was Legend of Dragoon, self published release by Sony Interactive. Just another game that was generally ignored but competes on a similar level with the Square RPG's of the time.
Much like this game it has a vastly different combat system involving combos and timing based QTE's that is implemented really well, it just adds some flavour beyond a bland "Attack" button.

philip means the triangle above your head when you're not in combat. It starts green or blue, I don't remember. Then orange, then red, indicating that you're about to get into a battle. You have to set the triangle to show, though. By default it doesn't show if I recall.

yes but the background still stays at low 240p no matter which setting. Jade Cocoon is such a game that gets ugly at higher resolution. The background doesnt get pretty, but more ugly. Best play to play it it's native settings at emulation. you want to match the background and not unmatching 3d at 4K and while background still stays 240p. Just lower the setting as close to the native

I think the highest level is 999. Once you get to 1000 you just get sent back to the 999th floor. I just found out yesterday that you could get boss skins as a drop from bosses. Had no clue that was even a thing. There are also special monsters you got through combining specific features via multiple merges. Those tablets that talk about divine beasts with specific features were meant to be instructions on how to get them. Gotta play the game again, there's gotta be other shit I missed too.

I only had quite blurred images of this game in my mind since it's been so long since I played it and I was quite young back then. But I clearly remember that I didn't finish it because I didn't wanna go on after the bad event. Also as a kid it made me sad that the wife had to suffer so much whenever I wanted to splice two monsters.

Since this Reviewer failed to mention this detail ill fill you in, if the games art style looks familiar to you, thats because the head character designer was Katsuya Kondō who works for Studio Ghibli which is why this game has a very Princess Mononoke vibe in both cutscenes and general tone which is easily one of its greatest strengths, also the game doesn't play like a cart racer like the reviewer poorly phrased, it has Resident Evil tank controls for better or for worse.

I've held the thought for a long time that, if this game were ever to be remade, after the main story and final boss is completed, then instead of just the Eternal Corridor, instead both gates in the temple open to you, one taking you back to the Barrier Gate where you can re-enter the Beetle, Dragonfly, Spider and Moth forests again, (with maybe the choice to their netherworld counterparts), with tougher monsters that alternate between all the elements, not just two.
The other gate in the temple leads to the Eternal Corridor, so that you can take the chance to catch whatever random monster that appears and test yourself against the bosses of the Corridor. (With maybe a few of the bosses being made tougher themselves, as I remember the 3rd, 5th and especially 7th being pitifully bland as a challenge).

you don't have to say that you aren't gay. you have nothing to proof. Or you are insecure for pointing that? A strong person who know his sexuality won't come up with such BS just to guard themself. Wake up!

Like many others my brother and I played the ever living sh*t out of the demo of this from a magazine
Finally found the full game in the corner shop by my school's tiny game section!!
Still can't believe it was there!

I liked to have the ones with the mad ball tails in all colours, they attacked by running forward and doing a half frontflip to land on their back while smashing the enemy with their tail, I can still hear the sound. The sequel on ps2 was dope too.

Truly one of the best games of all time for me! And if you play the sequel on ps2, the story finally feels finished. It let's you know what Levant has been up to during his time after getting to the endless corridor... but I won't say more than that 😆 and is also a fantastic game!

Mahbu I never knew... I do remember finding it a bit odd she covered herself more and more as the story progressed but damn... I really want to believe it's because of my sub basic english at the time and being 10 oe so yold kid that I simply didn't understand otherwise I'm a monster. Thank you for the plesent review nevertheless. Been 2 decades since I first played the demo, on par with Legend of Legaia this was best game of my childhood.

I think interms of the lore that the more she does the monster purification process, the more she suffers interms of wounds or something... kinda messed up when you think about it. But its a great game

"racing car movement" lol, usually people use tank control but i like it.Sound more fun.
The game was wonderfull(i rememnber i was thinking it was the closest thing to pokemon on ps1 at the time) and i was lucky because the french dub was amazing in quality, far better than the english dub from the gameplay i saw, so for once french dub was actually a positive, and that's rare. With a dub like that giving mabuu cancer never got old.
Also i think havind a dubbed game on ps1 was really something, and it may have been a big factor of why the game was so fast to finish, but it is a memorable experience for sure.

Kind of like Pokemon, but not really, but maybe. I thought the comparison to Pokemon is much stronger than Final Fantasy but I seethe point in it.
    Such a great game.

Holy fuck I finally found this game
I remember going to my cousins house one day, he rented games from blockbuster all the time, he rented this game from blockbuster and I thought it was awesome how he talked about it, then he booted the game up, and I saw how much reading and numbers were on screen and I got confused as a child, I thought you needed math to play the game, and I cried and begged him to just play Spyro, I never thought I’d find this game ever without knowing it’s name and vague images from the game from 20 years ago lmao
