Good review of a good vehicle. We currently have a B7 Passat wagon in the family and it looked stylish when new and still does. And very reliable. One point about this review, yes the back seats fold forward, but not FLAT. VAG vehicles did fold totally flat until the B8 Passat was introduced in 2014, along with its Skoda and Audi lookalikes. It's a big gripe with me and is one reason we hold onto our 2012 model.
If my bike fits in the back without having to dismantle it then yeah, I'd be interested, especially because it comes with a full-size spare, which for me is pretty much a must have item.
Disappointing that the Australian market never received the twin turbo tdi that the European market did. This was 177kw and 500 odd NM, these power figures along with the frugal economy would of been nice. Personally I own a revo tuned alltrack tdi which produces 177kw and 515nm, still great fuel economy and more power than the petrol 👍
@muddyshane4529 My passat is a 2018 2.0 tdi. No upgrades besides a stage 1 software tune from Revo. From what I have researched, there is no real benefit to go further than stage 1. Removing AdBlue tank and changing exhaust is pointless for minimal power gains. Only downside has been my AdBlue range has gone from approximately 15k to 9k for one tank. That's about as negative as it gets. I got the tune after I had put 70,000km on the clock, obviously voided the warranty. The car has 150,000km now and no issues. Mind you I don't drive it hard, and regularly average under 5.5lt per hundred. The benefit is purely pulling out in traffic and or highway overtaking.
I’ve driven similar car throughout Europe back in 2019 and I really like it. Practical, economical and has that German feeling that I personally love. I would definitely get panoramic sunroof!
Tom something that I as an older person would really appreciate is if when you did you're review's you could tell us how easy (or not) it is to enter and exit a vehicle
Have one of these on order. The Outback Touring was a similar price but better equipped. But the extra torque for country touring was more important to me than leather seats.
Nice review Tom. Although no longer the cheaper bargain they used to be, I would pick the Skoda Superb over the Passat. They are the new SAAB NG9-5 Aero estate that never made it to fruition (except for 6 prototypes). Having owned both VWs and SKODAs, the after sales support and dealer based initiatives are far more pleasant at Skoda than VW. Much more thought in the user experience at Skoda than VW also. 😂😝😂🤪
Another great review Tom, for another great car!!! Looking forward to your upcoming review of the "Premium" edition. I am keen to get your opinion on the new HVAC controls for the MY21 versions (that also included the new VW logo also). I personally own an Alltrack Wolfsbug Edition, so the "Premium" is more closely specced to what I have, but would be keen to see a review of the Alltrack Premium vs Superb Scout. That 200TSI is a belter, quicker again than the 162TSI (which is no slouch). Keep up the great work mate!!!
I will wait Subaru’s turbo engined Outback and save $15k, or pay $15k more for the Audi A4 Allroad. Both to me look better and represent better value than Passat Alltrack, IMHO. Great review as always Tom and the team.

2 years ago I was looking at the Outback, Pasat Alltrack and the ZB Calais V Tourer. I liked the VW but the trans tunnel was huge and I'm not a fan of Diesel for a passenger car the Subaru just felt big and clunky/ugly. We ended up with a pre registered Calais V Tourer for many thousands less than the others. It is a great car with a powerful and economical 3.6L V6 a very comfortable yet competent ride. All the safety, comfort and tech you need including a massaging drivers seat. Resale won't be great but I was 20k ahead of the VW on purchase price.
Just picked mine up 🤌🏻 Love it! There is under-thigh adjustment (manual on the outer front right edge of the seat base squab). Upper backrest does feel a bit narrow for me though. Amazing all rounder.
Sadly we don't get the Passat wagon here in the US and our Passat, built in America, gets little love from VW. It's larger and cheaper than the European Passat and comes up short against other mainstream midsize sedans. I'd purchase an upscale Passat or Arteon "estate" wagon in a heartbeat but American SUV-crazy consumers have killed off virtually every mainstream wagon except the Outback. And ironically Subaru has banned the use of the term "wagon" in reference to the Outback in favor of "SUV."
My passat 16, has 24 big and small issues in 4 years, replaced the clutch twice, replaced a battery, replaced a gear chip, replaced a thermostat etc......
Great car just a shame the tow ball downball is limited to a box trailer 90kg…. Meaning camper trailer and caravan are out of the question. New outback has a 200kg downball as compassion but a dud 2.5 l engine.
Tom I was considering the Tiguan but now looking at the Passat in your opinion which way should I go I have a mobility scooter to load in the back your advise appreciated
This sounds way better than the premium for me. I much prefer cloth seats and 18" wheels. Going on dirt roads with 19" wheels is just asking for tire problems. Electric lumbar adjustment is a must for me too so it ticks all my boxes.
If someone is looking for a non-luxury sedan but not a fan of the Toyota Camry, the Passat 140TSI Business would be your pick. For other versions of this car, I think there would be a lot of good alternative options that would be ready for you under Volkswagen's lineup. For example, the upcoming Arteon would be better than the Passat R-Line, although a little bit more costly, but a lot better. If you are looking for an AWD wagon, I'd suggest the A4 Allroad which offers a TDI engine.
I have the pre-update turbo diesel version and love it! Yes you can fit a bike in without removing the wheel - well my roadie at least. I’d have to take the wheel off my MTB (Scott Genius) but I use a rack instead. Toured a bit in it and super comfy, a bit of fun and just so practical.
Tom mentioned that Subaru Outback used to come with a 3L V6. A neighbour had one. He said car was ok but incredibly thirsty. He replaced it with an Octavia Wagon, with half the fuel consumption.
Wow, that’s amazing. For what it’s worth, in our testing the old Outback 3.6R used around 10L/100km - exactly what the Subaru with the smaller four-cylinder engine used as well! Meanwhile, these Volkswagen and Skoda four-cylinders can manage 8L/100km or thereabouts if you don’t flog them.
This would probably cross -shop well with a new Escape ST-Line AWD; mid-spec, AWD, very sharp handling, powerful motor, same safety kit, similar price point, etc. Will you test one?
