I'm so glad that you guys validated using references because I remember being called out by my art teacher for lacking creativity. So thanks for healing the young artist in me lol
I love using references. It gives me so much inspiration! That being said, the only downside of me using references is the fact that I spend more time on Pinterest scrolling through different references saying "oh that's cool I wanna use that!" than actually drawing lol
I love how one of the most iconic images of an artist is an artist drwaing on a canvas while looking at either fruit or a landscape. How did we ever convince young artists that references were cheating?
sadly people often think it is cheating because you did not completely came up with it. which is stupid because even if you come up with a pose or idea by yourself, there most likely already exists something similar somewhere. and people are also scared of being called out for 'stealing' while referencing is not stealing at all.. (its not like its the same as tracing)
Literally the renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci created body references so that other artist won’t struggle so much on drawing ( I maybe wrong since I learned this a long time ago so take it with a grain of salt or fact check idk 😂)
I know animated intros are expensive- but I almost wish there was an alt where Emily makes the save, Daidus makes a face, sighs & spills the ink himself. It just randomly plays every once in a while
Daidus is correct for using fashion magazines as a reference, since Hirohiko Araki has done that so much while drawing JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. What a legend
When yall started drawing the horses, I got flashbacks to the drawing tutorials the movie Spirited had on their dvds special features. Kid me may not have been an actual horse girl who rode horses, but dear gawd was I obsessed w/following that one tutorial 😂
Last year when Spider-Verse came out on Twitter you could see a few folks show the reference development process for their shots & it’s very mesmerizing to see how the final product came to be ❤ Animated films have the animators use tons of self recorded references to make tons of scenes & it’s awesome!
As a horse artist (or at least I have been for the last year lol): My lil critiques on your first set of horsies! Diadus: Honestly your horse wasn't too too tall. It was pretty close 👍 Your issue was actually the nose of the horse was too short. Lengthening the nose would have balanced out those legs and Emirichu: Your horse was pretty close too! Your main issue was the neck was too short. Horses have long necks! Remember: they stretch down to eat the grass on the ground! Overall good tries with those references :)
I am not an artist and have absolutely no talent or interest for drawing, but I love both of your personalities so much. I’m always excited when you guys drop a new video. It’s so fun to watch both of you in your element and having a good time.
Doing an episode where you draw with references is a GREAT idea. It destigmatizes the fact that you're only a good artist if you never use references, so 10/10
You should never feel shame when you use references, as Neal Adams (one of the best comic artists) once said "If you don't use photo reference as a number one tool, you will always be at the back of the pack!"
Drawing horses gives me flashbacks to my college portfolio. Apparently they’re a flex in animation, due to anatomy, their gait, and difficulty with drawing them and odd perspectives. Plus they were kind of everywhere in fine art for a few hundred years.
You know what, I never thought I could draw, but after I started watching you guys since LAST WEEK. I have not only drew with you guys, but can feel myself getting better. I don't think it can ever exceed more than a hobby but just the feeling of learning a new medium is amazing. (also is it normal for you to burn out amidst a session, because never had anything as quick as that when I make music or write something)
It is normal to feel burnt out even after a short period of practice because it's a new activity that requires surprisingly a lot of energy. If you keep it up, you will be able to spend more and more time without feeling drained, though you should always take breaks, at least to stretch your hands and back. Good luck on your journey, fellow traveller!
18:31 "What power you hold" That is exactly what most of us viewers are thinking when you guys casually make something beautiful and moving from some graphite and paper

When I first started drawing I remember feeling the need to say I used a reference if someone would complement it because if I didn’t I felt like I was lying to them. But, nowadays I realize how using references are super helpful and people shouldn’t feel guilty for using them!
I’m so glad that I see artists that I look up to say that it’s okay to use references. I used to be so embarrassed when I used references in my art, but videos like these really helped me
@@ashiri-chan lol no it’s not from a shady source; it’s from the Netflix show Spirit riding free, which is a children’s show loosely “based off” the original movie ‘Spirit of the Cimarron’ Most Spirit fans (myself included) really don’t like the show, because it takes the beautiful story of the original Spirit; a wild horse who is at first arrogant and naive to the ways of humans. YMMV on how much this helps, but sometimes I like to make light marks on the page where i want the drawing to begin and end and then make a mark halfway between those. It helps me orient myself on the page, especially if I'm trying to copy from a reference.
i’d love to see y’all try out blind contour drawings and modified contour drawings! blind contours are where you look at a reference object/photo and draw the outline of the object as you observe it, but without looking at the paper and with using one continuous line (you can pick up the pencil, but the idea is to have clean lines instead of sketchy lines). the results are wonky as hell, but it’s great practice for observation! and then modified contour drawings allow you to look at the paper, but your focus would still be on observing the reference. it’s a great way to practice with observation, proportions, negative space, and cleaner line art :))

They straight up used to have a book on how to draw horses and recommended using their models as references if you couldn't get to actual horses, since their models are made to scale and based off of actual horses.
A fun exercise we did in high school was to cut out a 2 point perspective image from a magazine, paste it on a sheet of drawing paper wherever it need to be based on the image and its perspective, and then we would find where the vanishing points were and draw the remainder of the clipped image to fill the page. ironically enough I've been watching these videos while learning how to draw horses for a rpg group xD These two videos were so fun to watch while also going through the "how the hell" stages and getting references! Idk if it'll help anyone in the comments or not, but redlining for more complex forms, like horses, can really help! You use a red pen to go over the form and build a block template for yourself (i.e triangle shoulder, oval body, ect) to help teach your brain how to deconstruct and anatomy! I found it helps massively!
Look up breeds of horses. There's actually a lot of different types that could help you stylize later. Also, different riding styles will have different tack used for the horse, so that's another idea there.

"very handy"
a weird thing about horses is once someone showed me that you can make the muzzle of the horse by making a frog face (easier to see than explain), and then the rest of the face looks like a lizard or dragon head
in words it sounds unhinged but it kind of makes sense in practice lmao
Dragon heads are usually referenced from horses so that makes sense ^^(at least when i draw dragons, horses are always my main inspiration)
@@sillyvally-m7b oh yeah for sure!
An interesting middle point between the two is another mythical creature with the Kirin, which kind of mixes the two together funnily enough 👀
