Vintage Straw Hat Collection - Collections Management

- Which hat was your favorite? My hair did get thoroughly messy putting on and taking off all these hats!
Today on Collections Management, I present another selection from my vintage accessory wardrobe, all of my vintage straw hats!
Again, like for my glove collection video, I did not include the brand names, materials (straw mostly...), or dates for these because in many cases I don't definitively know. Some have no tags or identifying marks, and a few I made myself! (numbers 16, 22 & 23) I would say on average most of these are from the 1940's or 1950's, with a few being earlier 1930's hats..The styles are often quite similar and I have no issue wearing them interchangeably with any era of look I put together!
Also, again, 99% these items don't have a "story" behind them, other than "I wanted x color hat, here's one on Etsy, I bought it" which is pretty boring story eh?
Like most of my vintage collection, the majority of these (I'd say 95%) were found on Etsy, and I usually don't like to pay too much for things. For vintage hats, I don't like to pay more than $25-$55 dollars for anything unless truly spectacular.
For those still confused, I use hat pins to hold my hats onto my head, see my last recent hat video to see exactly how!

Old Hollywood Glam!! Love all the hats and you look beautiful in them!!!
Thank you Leslie!
I am writing this so I don't wimp out. This work week is my official "hat week." You have inspired me to actually wear (in public) the hats I own and love...Thank you!
You can do it!
Once again a great presentation. I’m not a vintage dresser - just vintage (born 1946). I would never want to go back to the bad old days but you make me very nostalgic for the clothes.
I’m hoping you will show the novelty brooch collection soon.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you Kaye! Vintage style yes, vintage almost everything else...yeah nope. The fashion was sure something though! Novelty brooches are coming up soon-ish!
Ugh I love them all. No. 24 was particularly beautiful! But No. 1 is always my favorite. So simple and classic and perfect!
Thank you Kristina!
I love how you produced this video, modeling the hats and the music and such. Keep up showing us your lovely collections!
Absolutely fabulous hats, I love them all and you wear them so well :) Wish all women would start this style again.
Thank you!
Loved all the hats, of course --especially the ones with veils. But I especially loved how you gave the video an old film look and sound. What a fun touch!
Thank you!
Number 9 is my favorite. It’s so unique! It looks different from every angle!
Thanks Amy! I was sooo excited when I found no. 9 because it seems to be a rarer style in the market today and I got it for just $25!
This is FABULOUS!! The hats are all beautiful and you are STUNNING! Have you ever acted or modeled? I ask because you can convey so many emotions just with your eyes--from flirty to surprised to warning (Lady is not happy!)
Also, as I watched, it struck me that you would be perfect for a magazine called (I think) Days Gone By. It focuses on everything first half of the 1900's--mostly 40's and 50's. I am sure that the Lady readers would love to see your lookbooks! Just a thought...
Thank you! I'm afraid I am terrible at acting actually, if my high school theater experimentation with such is anything to go by, I stick to writing! As for modeling, at only 5 foot 5 inches tall and being a US size 12 as I am, I don't think it would ever work out for me. Perhaps if I was a foot taller!
I love hats! I’m just going to have to start wearing them more often. You have a very nice collection! I would love to see your Winter collection.
Thank you Tamra!
You always get the angle just right. Very stylish. 🍀 The chair adds a burlesque note.... took a moment.🤗☘ FAV hat @ 10:12
Thank you!
Well, I thought I had a favorite. But, the further along you went, the more I just marveled at. But numbers 9, 12 and 16 are definitely at the top.
This was sucha fun and entertaining video. Thank you for sharing part of your hat collection. I am hoping to see the non-straw ensemble soon. Since fall is quickly approaching.
Thank you! More hats coming soon-ish!
8 13 17. i loved them all but somehow 8 13 & 17...!! and it reminded me of the shopping scene in that touch of mink!
So adorable! #7 is my favourite and I really like 8, 11, 12, 14 (this one has sort of a Peter Pan/Rosalind Russell vibe going on), 21, 22, 23, 25. One of your best videos! Clap clap
Thank you Penny! I looove hats ❤
Wonderful....now for a video on where and how you store your lovely hats...😉💕
Thank you! I show how I store my hats in my closet tour video if you'd like a peek ruclips.net/video/Emq_2UmxVbM/видео.html
Just popping back to this video to let you know that I enjoyed this video and appreciate all the effort you put into it.
Thank you Holly!
I liked your darker shade of hair on this one. I just can't be crazy about hats, but 17 and 23 were possibly favorites....
Fantastic!!!! Love them all!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Arthelia!
You know, for some people, this collection is a waste of money. For us, vintage addicts, it´s a way of preserving a bygone era and giving it a chance to make history one more time. That is priceless!
Well I mean people collect all sorts of strange things, air force 1 sneakers, fancy cars, spend money on drinks and nights out, instead I buy hats :)
@@TheClosetHistorian and you do well! Keep it up!
I love these newsreel videos, such fun🥂🌟
Thank you!
I don't dress vintage fulltime but this really made me realize i need more hats
Lovely collection Bianca !
Thanks for another fun TCH production.
You have a lovely collection of straw hats. All the hats were beautifully styled.
Thank you Darnelle!
I want them all. But how to store them is the question. I would love to see your storage solution.
I show how I store my hats in my closet tour video if you would like to see ruclips.net/video/Emq_2UmxVbM/видео.html :)
8, 9, and 19 for me! I guess I'm in a beige mood tonight! Lol. Gorgeous collection!!!😍😍😍
Thank you Joanna! Can't beat a beige or natural straw hat for versatility!
so cool, but how do they actually stay on your head???
Thank you! I talk about it in my last hat video and show how I pin them as well, which you can see here if you would like ruclips.net/video/Rr_hmAn9KXY/видео.html
That is a lot of hats. Do you get a chance to wear them all out?
I wear them as often as I can really. The big red, navy, and natural colored straw ones see the most wear of them all though, they tend to go with nearly everything!
No. 6 reminded me of Ma Kettle. Look it up. Nice collection though.
i have a question is no 14 gray or brown/beige straw i love them all
Thank you! I would call it brown, but it is defiantly a grey-ish sort of brown indeed :)
Is there a hard and fast rule on how one should wear their hats? I notice yours are worn with a jaunty tilt. Can you wear them straight on the crown of you head? The cream and black with the netting will look great with your riding pants. Can't spell jonpers. Lol
I feel one can wear their hats however they should like. Most of the time I wear mine at said jaunty angle, and occasionally quite flat on the very back of my head so they stick up framing my face almost like a big straw halo. Sometimes I wear them tilted low over my face almost like how some 18th century bergere hats were worn, it just depends on the outfit I have on and how I'm feeling that day, or how my hair turned out etc. That little straw top hat is very "riding" ensemble ready, and I have indeed worn it that way before theclosethistorian.blogspot.com/2015/09/equestrian-autumn.html
Thank you for sending me to your blog. Those pictures are great! Ok so now I get the hat placement. You are gorgeous and your make up is the bomb. I'd like to see your other handbags mgmt. I'm a little bit envious of your wardrobe and style. Love to watch your videos. Ok I talked to much.
Can I ask if you know the style names for #10 and #18?
I'm afraid I don't know any specific names for them, I found most of my straw hats by simply searching "straw hat" and then going through pages of results for the gems! So many sellers on etsy and ebay don't know the official names for things either, or get the decade way off, so the more generic the search the better really for good bargains. Experienced vintage sellers know what they have and price it accordingly, people cleaning out their great aunt's garage and listing everything for $15 may not ;)
@@TheClosetHistorian Thank you! Just thought I'd ask just in case. Looking to recreate a specific costume and those two were the closest to what I was looking to match...
I am over the moon in love with the way that you put this together! I also have a very large (40 plus) hat collection spanning the 1920’s thru 1960’s. You have not only given me *many* more practical ideas for taking them out of their boxes and wearing them, but additionally I now have a friendly and knowledgeable resource online that I can direct others to when wearing hats in public, and the inevitable compliments and questions are fielded. Thank you from the bottom of my 💘anything oldie moldy and dusty musty heart!
Thank you Diane! I'll have to pull out the rest of my collection too, I'm glad there are other hat lovers out there!
Absolutely lovely. Next, can we see your non-straw ones?
Thank you Debbie! Sometime certainly :)
I️ absolutely love your voiceover/ announcer voice!
Thank you Amelia!
I adore the hats and your hair...love the video...you truly are beautiful...👒🇨🇦
Thank you Colleen!
Holey shew! you look fabulous in them. I can also see why you would be disappointed more people didn't enjoy this video- the static/music - that and styling so many hats- must have been a great deal of work for you. Really well done. Personal favorites: #8- I've never seen a hat like that outside of a movie costume and #12 - loved the contrasting trim.
Thank you! I only just put away all the hats again today ;) It was too daunting, but I finally tackled it ha!
It's fun going back in time with you!!
Thank you!
I love them all, but the ones with flowers are my favourites.
Thanks Gretchen! I love the flower ones too, the larger black hat with all the white flowers and full netting is one of my absolute faves
Amazing collection doll! I especially love the pillbox type with veiling! Gorgeous! XX
Thank you Jo!
Those are so gorgeous! I loved seeing this collection, and you have inspired me to begin my own collection! I only have a felt bowlers and a velvet cloche, and they're both much more "winter functional" than "pretty."
Woot! Love the first few hats, my kind of style. Do you have a collection of hat pins too? Would like to see those with possibly info on where they where they were placed on the hat and in the hair. I usually put a clip or small braid in my hair to use my hat pins. Excellent job.
Thank you Mya! While I do have a handful of hat pins, none are particularly "special" they're just little faux pearl topped or plain glass head pins, I don't have any nice vintage ones or any that are fancier or unique. The few longer ones I have I simply made myself from spare beads and findings from craft shops. The only consideration I have as far as where I place the hat pins is where it secures the hat best, I don't tend to think about how hat pins look I just try to get the hat to stay on my head really.
They are all absolutely beautiful but I particularly love the black one with the little lilac flowers on. For some reason Eliza Doolittle popped into my head. You look stunning in all of them; I wish I could wear hats - but nothing suits me :-( xx
Thank you! I love that purple flower one, I need more things to wear it with. I'm sure there is a hat out there for you, there are so many different shapes and styles! I hope you can find one you adore someday!
You are simply stunning. I love your collection! I only have ten or so straw hats and thought I was going a lil overboard, but a lady can never have too many hats. I can't wait to see the next installment of your hat collection. Perhaps felt? Or fur? 😘
Thank you Angela! It's true, a lady can never have too many hats ;)
I didn’t write earlier but I drooled over all the hats!! My favourites is the first red one and the stunning blue one (#11). How many years did it take you to collect so many and how are you storing them!? One day I may get the courage to get a hat on this big curly haired noggin!!
Thank you Paz!
I love the video as usual! So creative. My favorite is the first white one- with all of the ridges. It almost looks like a scallop shell or a clam shell
Thank you! That one has a very clam like shell shape indeed, makes me feel a bit like a 1950's matronly mermaid in the best sense ;)
Exceptional editing. Great job! Are they all thrifted?
Thank you! I think of all these hats I only bought one in person, at an antique mall, but all the rest were purchased online from Etsy or Ebay. Three of these (numbers 16, 22, 23) I made myself, and numbers 19 and 20 are "modern" 18th century bergere hats also purchased on Etsy which I have talked about in a haul here on the channel before :)
@@TheClosetHistorian Thank you ! ( :
Beautiful hats! And also a brilliantly edited video. I'm old enough to remember my mother and aunts vast collection of hats. You wear yours with elegance, panache and a touch of humor. 💕
Thank you!
I love the way you do these it's like peeking into the past.
Ps the hats were lovely too😄
Thank you Vicky!
How do you manage to keep them from falling when they’re tilted, do you use hairclips to secure them, I think I see a hairband at 3:23 ? Also, I adore this collection, each and every one of them is stunning and complements your face perfectly! 💖💖
Thank you! I talk about how I keep hats on my head in my last video about hats here ruclips.net/video/Rr_hmAn9KXY/видео.html
Number 21 I could see you wearing that to a Fourth of July parade or picnic. They are all sweet. I do like to wear a hat with a veil sometimes. Thank you for sharing.🌹🕊🖖
You really know how to wear a hat, I'm taking notes!
Thank you!
25 straw hats? That isn't a collection, that's an addiction.
Indeed, and these are just the straw ones, I have wool ones, and silk...eek!
Beautiful as always, and the hats are a worthy accessory to showcase it ❤
Thank you!
3 is my fav. I had one in a lovely royal blue very much like #8. I love hats, I just can't seem to wear them.
Could you please talk about how you get them to stay on your head? I saw a few with hat pins, but not all. And your hair wasn’t pulled tight into a ponytail or anything, so how were the pins not just sliding out? So. Many. Questions. 😂
I recently made a whole video about hats where I talked all about this and showed myself pinning a hat on, check it out here ruclips.net/video/Rr_hmAn9KXY/видео.html If a hat feels sturdy all by itself I may not even use a pin, conversely if a hat needs three hat pins to feel secure I will keep pinning until it stays where I'd like, and then some hats have an elastic that is worn under/in the hair to keep them on, each hat has its own demands essentially!
TheClosetHistorian Aha, gonna watch the other video, thanks!
you have a joan crawford look'
Thank you!
Wonderful!!! All these beautiful hats 😍 👒😍
I absolutely require a video showing of your felt and more “wintery” hats!! I must see the entire hat collection!!
I am wondering how many there are...I have never counted them you see ;)
Love number 1 but all were beautiful. I love a good straw hat.
So many hats! And that's just the straw ones?!
P.S. Every time you smiled suddenly, I wondered if your visitors were making faces off camera. Or maybe that's just because that's what I'd be doing. >.>
Oh the visitor arrived only for the last few hats, it's more I smile because modeling feels a bit silly and sometimes I can't help it ;)
Absolutely lovely...thank you for sharing your wonderful collection ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you!
can you do videos of you putting on pretty Hats in the car on video??
Wow what a collection! And this is only our straw hats! (Make me feel less guilty about my own collection) I would love to se a video on how you care for, and store them 🤩
I ❤️ the vintage glam way you show the hats - just like an old fashion movie clip 🤩📽🤩🎞🤩🎙
Thank you Rebekka! I show how I store my hats in my closet tour video if you would like a peek ruclips.net/video/Emq_2UmxVbM/видео.html
Hi, Hooray! More hats... and so many. Wonderful. I have te best time with you (even when I get my notifications late). Can't wait to see what's next. Yours, Ann
Thank you Ann!
How... did I miss this video?! Wow. Rude, RUclips. I think I love all of them to be honest. But my fave must have been the little orange one! So cute!
Thank you Madeleine!
You have a lovely collection! I liked 6, 13, 14 and 24 best. But the real questions should be, which do you love the most and which do you wear the most?
Thank you Elizabeth! I wear my big natural straw and red straw hats the most I'd say, they seem to go with everything!
So I’m a 23 year old in the army... male soldier and honestly I wear vintage women’s hats and they r fun !!! I dress like the 40s in male fashion with slight women accents :) love wearing a veil
Sounds super stylish to me!
You were born to wear hats! Super cute! And why are you not doing voice overs may I ask?! You would be perfect for that kind of work! Side hssl of the side hussle perhaps?
Thank you Brenda! I'm not sure there is much voice over work here in Denver to be had, perhaps in LA ha!
Terrific expressions! Especially the quick flashing smile as if someone ‘on the set’ cracked a joke. So much like the fashion shorts in movie reels.
Thank you!
Extraordinary video! And you are the perfect, beautiful model. Cheers, Ardith
Thank you Ardith!
Awesome effects (though it took me a minute to decipher tch as your name and not just random random letters. i blame the cold medicine). Do you ever forget the veil is there and go to touch your face and get so confused by the interference? (Ive done this with my glasses a few times)
Yes, or when taking a sip from a straw. They can be a problem with long false eyelashes too so I have to remember not to wear them and a veil together ;)
Love how you put this together, lovely 😸
I am so jealous of your beautiful collection and you look gorgeous in every single hat too! It's not fair :-)
Thank you Nathalie!
I need hats it’s official....
Those gloves are exquisite! I always feel that wearing gloves as a sensuous experience.
Things got changed while I was writing this one. Oops!
Lv your presentation ✌🏿️👌🏾👼🏿
Thank you!
The first one, the red one...set at a jaunty angle...that was sooooo you!
I also adored the one with the feather.
Thank you Rara! I love that feather one too, feels very Victorian to me!
1, 9, 10, 19, 24 are my faves but they are all amazing!!!
Thank you!
Love this. Personal favs are 2, 6, 10, 13 and 23!
Thank you Karina!
Dreaming of summer.
All the hats are lovely, but I like the small black hat with an opening in the crown and netting, cream straw with bow, navy with wide brim and pillbox with netting and gardenias.
Thank you! That little open crown black straw with the veiling is such a fun one, I need to wear it more often!
@@TheClosetHistorian, you should; it has so much character.
My favorites are 17 and 20. Loved this!
Thank you Lynn!
What an amazing collection you have. You look amazing in all of them.
Thank you Carmen!
Fade into technicolor...fabulous!
Thank you!
wow, nice collection! where do you get your head pins?
Thank you! I get hat pins on Etsy mostly, sometimes a few will come with a hat too!
Wow, so many hats ❤❤
Hat number 13 was my favourite.
'tis a cute little one that!
LOVE..💙💚💛🧡💜
Luv them all! Want them all!😍👒Xx
Thank you Jo!
I believe in the magic of hats.
Same :)
Love them all....
Thank you Christine!
Great collection!❤
Thank you Dona!
#15 is stunning!
Thanks! Shining coated brown straw, an odd finish, but one that was quite popular it seems!
OMG 6, 14 & 24!!!
Those are some good ones ;)
14 💚
It feels Victorian to me, such a fun one!
Oh my word... so many! Could you do a "How I store my vintage hats" vid? I've got a few hanging around and no idea how to store them properly!
I do show how I store my hats in my closet tour video if you want to take a peek at my storage ruclips.net/video/Emq_2UmxVbM/видео.html
You create an awesome vintage video, complete with crackling on the film. I love it! I tried to pick favorite hats and gave up. You have some stunners!
Thank you Johanna!
Did the netting on these hats originally serve a purpose, or have they always been for dramatic effect?
For these 20th century hats they are always for fun/flair as far as I know. There were veils on hats in the early days of automobiles to protect the face from dust/bugs/wind because carriages and then cars were open to the elements at times, but I'm pretty sure by the 40's it was just a glamorous touch!
Terrific video. So much fun to watch. Love your hair. You look lovely in every one of the hats.
Thank you Nannette!
You looked great in each one. My favorite was number 17.
Thank you! That is a fun one, makes me feel like I'm going on a fox hunt in 1910 even though I would never do such a thing!
