crit checks are all run as soon as you click before you even fire. so console output will always have to "wait for the next cycle" to update the numbers
Also worth mentioning (it was mentioned at around 0:46 but it might be easy to miss), the crit bonus multiplier is only based on damage done within the last 2 to 20 seconds, so that's why there's a delay of a couple seconds during that part of the video.

Uber saw is a melee weapon with random crits. ALL weapons like that have an inherant 15% chance to crit with no prior damage. And 20 seconds can be a long time in TF2, so if there is a crossbow shot or two or a prior melee attack in there, you crit fairly often.

So, you're telling me that if i deal enough damage as a Scout, i can get a high crit chance while i whack people with the Sun-On-A-Stick or the Wrap Assassin? Nice.
Joined a payload game on the side of a team that was getting stomped defending. Went heavy and went on a 40 kill rampage. A soldier with no cosmetics and a level two badge joined and fired a random crit that ended my streak. We lost right after that. True story. The hell with random crits.
The only way I've found I've been able to actively follow math in my life and it's calculating when your gun gets a glowey damage boi in the silly cartoon hat game
Fascinating as always! I never knew about the crit bucket, or how insanely high the melee crit chance can get to. I don't quite get the random number generator part with the "random seed." Not only do I not understand it, but from what I do get of it, I don't know know why it would be needed since it sounds like a weird way of just making it more unlikely.
This is going to sound weird, but believe me, it's true. Computers can't decide things randomly. Seriously. The reason the whole random seed thing exists is because the game (and all computers in general) can't decide things randomly. So, how they programmed it is by having a clock spin up at super high speeds, and then whenever you shoot, the game looks to see if the clock number is below your crit chance, and if it is, then it gives you a crit. Ta da! "randomness". It's not random at all, you just can't notice the difference. Different games use different ways to determine randomness. For example, some games actually use the TEMPERATURE OF THE CPU to roll for "randomness". It's kinda fascinating.
I always thought that the medic gets higher random crit chance after healing teammates for a while, since using the ubersaw always seemed to have higher crit chance than other classes that use melee. Guess its been debunked :|
I don't know what the likely-hood of this being seen, but I have always noticed that when there's a lot of enemies in front of an opposing sentry gun, the sentry tends to switch from target to target, whether or not the target dies. I'm a bit curious if this is something that's done at random, or if there's something more to it that determines who the sentry targets if there are multiple targets
It's worth noting that the crit bucket and damage types ratio check were not in the game at launch, they were added a lot later. Additionally, base crit chance on ranged weapons used to be 5%, it was lowered to 2% in 2009.
Personally, I'd like to know how the script kiddies and bots can get (almost) guaranteed crits, especially since there are at least two things that seem to counter-act guaranteed crits within the crit check systems.
It basically just gives the server the highest possible random value generated by the client so that when the data is sent to the server, it ends up maximizing crit chance or something like that.
How did you monitor the variables through the console? I would also be interested in an explanation of how to interpret the source code, how to find where the crit calculations are and all that. Guess the bucket may be why some people were under the false impression that crit chance bonus didn't deplete.
Honestly, when there’s a source leak of a game, it’s way easier, but still hard. You basically just have to look through code, usually using comment searching if comments are involved in the leak, and find a method or variable that looks like it’s responsible, then just look at all cases in which that variable is used or function is called to see what happens. It can be very tedious to do, and with something as big as TF2 it would be hard even if it was nice and organized code, but spaghetti code is a nightmare. Some games like Minecraft are easy as hell to mod since everything is super organized and well commented, though (which the TF2 code leaked shows it isn’t). If you don’t have the source code, you’re a bit fucked and it will be way harder, but you start off by looking at memory addresses during specific points in gameplay, and then you see which variables have or haven’t been changed. Then you can look at the game’s assembly (notated machine code) and see where that’s used. Sometimes code can be decompiled into an easier to understand programming language in a coherent way, but sometimes it can’t. In general, you need decent coding and computer experience to do so, and sometimes it’s easier just to test things out in game instead of trying to look at code.
This actually perfectly explains why the ubersaw and pan apparently crit so much more often. Because they're being USED so much more often. I've experienced this myself, as, being a medic, I use a strange solemn vow and repeatedly try to melee people, and that thing will end up critting quite often. Turns out ANY melee weapon will crit a lot, if you just use it a bunch.. Go figure.
2:15 presumably this includes the crit bonus of the flare gun. I wonder how this would work with the Dragon's Fury if it could crit. Since the damage bonus is actually the normal damage and a negative damage modifier is applied.
First they bitch that random critz are bad, cause they reward for no input. Now they bitch that random critz are bad, cause they do reward for input. Seriously, this is just stupid.
Its quite readonable. If you r constantly maxing out damage, that means there is just more and more people out there you couldn't kill. Doing 800 raw damage in 20 second is not hard to achieve. But hard to maintain. Take rocket launcher as an example, to achieve 800 raw dmg in 20 seconds. first you will have to do 11 non-stopping shot(with reload). And you have at least direct hit 9 of those, basically aim bot accuracy. And somehow you didn't kill all of yout enemy.
Medigun healing doesn’t increase random crit chance? So you are telling me that the Medics who run at fully revved Heavies with the Ubersaw and get 2 random crits in a row don’t have some additional crit chance on their side?
@@Guaporacer but you're completely disregarding the damage buildup probably harnessed by both primary and the melee itself, the ubersaw is a favorite over its extra damage after all

Its funny how cheaters can overpass that "checks" and have random crits when they want and i can reflect his crockets and use them as toys for my entertainment
@Blackout there is a meme video in my channel of a chater being counter-attacked by his own random crit, in that match, he was always getting crits including his medic, i have the question, how they can do that? How they manipulate the game to always get a crit?
@Blackout a maximum of 8% rolled 10 times in a row? i can believe it happened once somewhere, but when it's past 10^-10 it becomes harder to believe on a routine basis

This explains why I would have seemingly more "random crits" than regular hits back when half zati still had random crits! Thanks!
Thanks for precious knowledge
Joined a payload game on the side of a team that was getting stomped defending. Went heavy and went on a 40 kill rampage. A soldier with no cosmetics and a level two badge joined and fired a random crit that ended my streak. We lost right after that. True story. The hell with random crits.
Imagine the soldiers reaction to ending your ks lmao. "Jose_Gonzales 2007 HAS ENDED Epic_Heavymain'S KILLSTEREAK 40>"
If your team relies on 1 good player carrying the team to win, they don't deserve to win. The random crit balanced the situation.
@@TheOsamaBahama the enemy team shouldn't rely on a trash player getting blessed by the rng gods to win either lmao, the crit wasn't balanced.

I remember getting 4 crits in a row, i got so many points from it, it was when i was still new to the game
this explains why I've seen crits come out, and they aren't crits.
oh so thats exactly why i sometimes hear crit sound but it doesnt actually crit
@@burnedgrapes yep, I've heard and even seen the crit clientside, and it just turns into normal damage.
this has never happened to me on valve servers, only community, leading me to believe it's a server plugin thing
@@hoffer_moment it tends to happen to spy's revolver, sometimes you hear the crit sound, you hit the player and no crit damage
Something I've always been curious about is how crit hacks work. I understand why you probably don't want to explain how people do it but still lol
This left so many questions about how this works in practice
So a full bodyshot from Sleeper and then jumping on the enemy team with the Kukri works every time 60% of the time?
I like those odds.
The only way I've found I've been able to actively follow math in my life and it's calculating when your gun gets a glowey damage boi in the silly cartoon hat game
epic video as always
Fascinating as always! I never knew about the crit bucket, or how insanely high the melee crit chance can get to. I don't quite get the random number generator part with the "random seed." Not only do I not understand it, but from what I do get of it, I don't know know why it would be needed since it sounds like a weird way of just making it more unlikely.
isnt it just a randomizer?
@@DrMonty-ng5fo ye, but i mean, all this random seed stuff happens just so a random number can be generated, isnt it?
@@DrMonty-ng5fo Ah okay. That makes sense.
@@DrMonty-ng5fo Some applications use microscopic atmospheric measurements that will never be the same because of chaos.
random crits work when you're doing really well in the game and a f2p hits you with a crit rocket

Wow, super interesting video!
I love the Gabe newel face you made with all the letters and stuff in the console lmao.
This makes them actually seem "fair and balanced"
I always thought that the medic gets higher random crit chance after healing teammates for a while, since using the ubersaw always seemed to have higher crit chance than other classes that use melee.
Guess its been debunked :|
7:48 *Well that escalated quickly...*
This explains everything. I have always wondered why Medics and Engineers always seem to have melee crits
‘The medigun doesn’t count’
So the one main theory as to why medic melee weapons crit so often isn’t true? huh….
I don't know what the likely-hood of this being seen, but I have always noticed that when there's a lot of enemies in front of an opposing sentry gun, the sentry tends to switch from target to target, whether or not the target dies. I'm a bit curious if this is something that's done at random, or if there's something more to it that determines who the sentry targets if there are multiple targets
maybe it depends on distance to target?
Pretty sure it does
Thanks for the video.
It's worth noting that the crit bucket and damage types ratio check were not in the game at launch, they were added a lot later. Additionally, base crit chance on ranged weapons used to be 5%, it was lowered to 2% in 2009.
Imagine if mediguns counted as a negative crit chance multiplier
shounic: This is a crit bucket

It’s incredible how much effort went into a system everybody hates
simply delightful gaben ascii art on the console ;)
I can't wait until people start trying to manipulate RCs in casual
If there was a TF2 speedrun of some kind and a random crit would speed it up, you know they would find a way.
@@GogiRegion ...and abuse it
Crits are awarded to players doing a lot of damage, making the teams even more unbalanced than they already were
First they bitch that random critz are bad, cause they reward for no input. Now they bitch that random critz are bad, cause they do reward for input. Seriously, this is just stupid.
Yeah, so what? They're still fun. Play a no crits server if it bothers you
Its quite readonable.

Random crit gameplay: haha rare high moment in tf2 go brrrr!
Random crit lore:
Medigun healing doesn’t increase random crit chance? So you are telling me that the Medics who run at fully revved Heavies with the Ubersaw and get 2 random crits in a row don’t have some additional crit chance on their side?
So wait if the medi gun's assist damage isn't counted towards the damage bucket, why do medic melee's crit so often?
Melees have a much higher crit chance, and since medic doesn't use his melee often, when he does swing he will often crit.
if you look close enough at 7:27 you can see that the engineer blood is about 10% radioactive piss
end of the episode: *CRITICAL HIT!!!*
*_moon explodes_*
>Medigun doesn't count towards the damage bonus.
So wait, why do Medic melees crit so much then???
i think medic crits are also based off how much healing you have done and overheal probably does not count
As stated in the video melees have a higher crit chance
@@daedliy963 yeah but only 15% at base, which is in no way the average ammount of crits a medic deals with his melee
@@Guaporacer but you're completely disregarding the damage buildup probably harnessed by both primary and the melee itself, the ubersaw is a favorite over its extra damage after all
@@daedliy963 its stated in the video that the medigun doesnt builds up crit chance, and a medic that has his primary out for more than a couple seconds, specially for dealing damage, is not doing a good job, and we talk about competent medics here, also they tend to just one shot you with a crit before they even get the chance to realistically build up damage
if damage from healing someone doesnt count, then how come the ubersaw ALWAYS crits?
