Joni so great to catch one of your videos. thanks for another great idea. we are actually getting back to our build and hopefully back on the road in early 2024 and hopefully Jonathan and I get to meet up and catch up with you. his our great visits
Climate control is so important in a van. I found that the higher the voltage, the more efficient the unit. So, I opted for a 240 V mini split that only produces an average of 238 Watts per hour. The compressor is actually housed within the van and a max air fan on the back door to move air in through inlets giving the compressor the environment it needs to operate properly. The best efficiency I’ve heard thus far on ANY unit. Would love to hear from anyone else that can share a more efficient system. I’m always willing to optimize.😊
Wow! That was very knowleageable and to the point. Lot's of excellent information packed into such short time. Your knowledge and expertise in the subject is obvious and appreciated. Cheers and thank you.
The bad thing about mounting on the back of anything is the dirt and dust that swirls around the back of your and a roof top mount would be ideal and a lot of air flow and the noise on the back would annoying so roof top would be the best all around mounting spot.
I’m a blank slate regarding everything that needs to be done especially the electrical and solar so I’m going to learn how to do as much as I can. I may be buying a pro master 2500 from a family member who just bought it from a business. It has a new transmission with 60,000 miles. He’s had checked out and he said it’s in perfect condition. I think it’s a 2010.
That's a great option. I'm hoping to build a small van just for weekend use to see if I could ease into it on a longer term basis. Definitely AC is a need. Thank you for posting and explaining your set up.
Valuable info! My next van idea will be much smaller than yours.. looking at the Promaster 118 wheel base with low roof. I have this idea with the rear wheel wells to make some bulkheads all the way up to the roof so that the a large high queen bed could be closed off with a curtain too. Then opening vent holes in both rear wheel wells so can just install a portable AC 5000 btu in the garage and have it supply air through vents in the bulkheads either to the bed or the living area to further reduce the space that needs cooling. Not even about cooling a space so much as having some cold hair directed at me where I'm at. I have another controversial idea i did in my current van that works well here in Florida - I cut a giant hole in my roof, lip up the sheet metal and over it with a giant solar panel and strip of stainless mesh for always open ventilation - bugs and water never get in, and it adds some ambient light and enough height so I can stand and even look out.
You convinced me! I bought one on Amazon, I’ve been trying for 2 weeks to find out what adapter to use for a solar generator and the communication is horrible. In part because one can only use 50 characters to communicate and also, maybe, there’s a language barrier. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO HOOK THIS UP TO A Bluetti SOLAR GENERATOR? I am getting help to install tomorrow, if I can’t do it I need to return within 30 days. I don’t understand why this is so hard to answer. I doubt if I am the first one to use a solar generator.
Thank you very much for your sharing, I'm also interested in the circulation fan mounted on the top, could you share the purchasing links? Thank you so much ❤
Are you sure about the the product link. It seem like she has a smaller unit. She says uses like 600 watts 45 amps. Can you confirm please. I am going to get one but am worried about the power consumption.
Thank you for this information out of a...I am building a custom camper van "Delica", which are sold here in Oz used from Japan ...sadly my life is short thanks to the US Government killing US Troops in Vietnam with Dioxin (Agent Orange) I have several medical health issues that will kill me ....just a fact of life...Right now over 400,000 Vietnam Veterans have already died since returning home from health issues directly related to that exposure, according to the US Veterans Administration.. .I want her Van to be safe and extremely comfortable...she's a great lady and I used to be a Art Teacher, as we often camped here, plus in my earlier years I was a bump and paint man... so custom metal and wood working are simple for me. I built a roof rack with twin solar collectors. When parked she hits a switch and the second collector extends out to the side, as a sun shade and doubles the power intake. I was thinking adding a blanket type collector of on the front windshield could also be an option... any thoughts? Here in Australia we have so many back dirt roads, I am setting her up with stronger wheels, springs and shocks ... plus a splash shield and wench. Time is short as over 400 VN vets die a day, all my Australian VN Vet Friends have died and all my VN Team Members.... like anyone cares.... great post... thank you.
When she says it dropped the temp of the van to 72° - 80°, she never said what the temp is outside. Summer's definitely getting warmer and I'm curious what people are doing on those "feels like 107°" days ... also, I don't know if she indicating how many BTU that unit equals out to.
Two vital measurements: How much cold does it put out (expressed in btu/hr) and how much power does it draw to do that (expressed in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours for big draws). Leave that out and its just more youtube yappology
You cant beat the 5000-6000 btu window ac mounted upper rear, may have to get a plexiglass/lexan panel to replace glass if you dont have solid panel. Cleaner install results, weight is less, watts are way less, cost is way less. Soft start 455 watts plus inverter watts used. You can teach this old dog new tricks, if its logical

One of the biggest reasons why I do not live in my van is because of the heat. So now I can research this mini split idea. Thank you for sharing this.
There us nothing new about 12 volt air conditioning units fir vans and campers. They have been around forever

this is actually pretty cool. Curious, any idea if you can mount that exterior unit, lying down, underneath the van where the spare tire is?
Pretty sure that would get really dirty really fast!
