    What happened to Shireen was horrible and heartbreaking but what gets overlooked is that Stannis wasnt just doing it so he can be king or for his own personal gain. He is completely convinced he is the prince that was promised and that only he can save the entire world from death by becoming King and he has been made to believe it by the things he has seen Melisandre do. For him he believes he is making the ultimate sacrifice for the good of the realm and everyone in it and that everyone, including his daughter, will die anyway if he doesnt.

    • @Silver_Owl
      @Silver_Owl Год назад +11

      But Shireen is not his to sacrifice, her life does not belong to him. I agree it's a fascinating moral dilemma - do you have the right to kill one innocent to save others? It's the Trolley Problem, basically. But still - it is one thing to sacrifice to the gods what is yours to give, and another to steal what is not yours and offer that. And Stannis has no moral right to Shireen's life. Legally perhaps, as her father and King, but morally no.

    • @Fett411
      @Fett411 Год назад +2

      I dont think that morality exists in this world. Parents marry off their children for their own benefits, even Ned arranges marriage for Sansa and talks about arranging one for Arya. Tywin talks of marrying off Cersei despite her being much older and then you have the likes of Walder Frey and Craster that marry their own daughters and have children with them.
      I agree though it is an interesting dilemma, where do you set the line that you dont cross if its to save the entire world?

Society argues over what is moral and what isn't, like all societies, and yes, they see nothing wrong in things we would now disapprove of, just as we permit things they wouldn't. But even so - morality exists. Yeah, it's a great dilemma. How far do you go? How far do you have the right to go?

      Stannis is what happens when a man is truly just, where nothing is too far to serve the greater good or what is perceived as the greater good. Stannis believes with all he has that everything he does is justified, something that in reality many characters in GOT also believe as justification for the terrible things they do. Ned was a truly honourable man who lost because he was playing the game with people honour meant little to, Stannis was a man that believed that because he was doing the "right" thing no one could fault him for what he did whether it was Renly or Shireen. He got away with Renly because nobody knew it was him, Shireen everybody knew what he did and so at the end of the day Stannis deserved a gruesome death didnt get it put still paid for his delusions of grandeur

I don't know what will happen to make Stannis do it but he will of that you can be sure. Also keep in mind that he doesn't just want to sit on a damn iron chair like Joffery, he genuinely believes himself to be The Promised Prince and if he doesn't become King and unite the realm behind him then everyone will fall to the darkness coming from the North including his own daughter so I can see him making the ultimate sacrifice, not for power or a chair but for the good of the realm and everyone in it

    If Stannis truly believed he was right to do what he did, he would not have sent Davos away. Davos (one of the show's very few examples of wisdom and genuine decency) would certainly have stopped him, and Stannis could not let himself be stopped. It would be admitting to being wrong in front of his army, and, more importantly, I think, admitting to himself he was wrong. That is something he can't face.
    Compare that to Daenerys taking back Jorah. A true queen can admit she was wrong.

    I really wish we got to see more of Shireen’s mother’s perspective. It’s likely her resentment and rejection of Shireen stemmed from the fact that she was a constant reminder of her failure to provide Stannis with heirs.
    After watching House of the Dragon, I don’t think GoT really drove home the fact that the role of noble ladies in Westeros was to further their husband’s line. Providing a male heir was pretty much the number 1, 2, 3 most important tasks as a wife (as if women had any control over that). Wars were fought over it. People were killed over it. And if you as a woman were unable to provide that male heir, then you’re worthless.
    I have no sympathy for her, nor do I even like her, but I think it’s interesting to explore how a woman who was grieving the loss of the 3 children and dealing with the shame of not providing heirs for her husband would come to hate her only daughter.

Davos would have never let that happen if he was around and I wish he could of avenged Shireen brutally instead of making Brienne appear out of nowhere and kill him. Made no sense from a writing's perspective and was stupid within the plot only to get justice for Renly. I wanted Davos to go on full serial killer mode on him for doing that willingly and not even attempt to stop it or interfere. What a monster to just watch his child burn on a stake. The walk from the bay is the exact same as Castle Black is in the middle of the wall. And, by staying on the north side they could gave gotten ambushed by the Night King again. We don’t know for sure if there are other armies of the dead scattered throughout the north side of the wall? It seems Jon and Tormen departed Castle Black on the south side (someone check me). Don’t think Daenerys was calling for Drogon; she had the same look Obi-Wan had before Vader struck him down. She probably thought this was the end.
    Remember when Ser Jorah told Tyrion about the time the dragons were born? “I was a cynic like you...watched a girl step into a great fire...alive and unhurt...holding her baby dragons...it’s hard to be a cynic after that.” That last part was what Tyrion was going through as he watched Drogon take off with mommy. Like he never saw anyone like her before and she might be the first person for him to believe in.

    I've enjoyed rewatching the show with you through your reactions because you're such an unjaded person and you let your emotions show. I had forgotten that Stannis saved Jon and The Watch from the Wildlings, and I had forgotten that Stannis gave Jon ships to rescue people from the Night King and his army, but I never have and never ever will forget that Stannis stood there and watched as his daughter burned alive and he was the one who agreed to it. Not only that, but Stannis sent Davos away so he couldn't talk him out of it and he basically deceived his daughter in order to get her unknowing blessing on his actions so he didn't feel as bad about it. I agree that the showrunners didn't need to be this graphic, and I think this season has been one step after another towards this point. I don't know if it's because they finally ran past where the books were in the story or what, but they have substituted this stomach churning violence for violence's sake in the place of the author's use of violence as a part of the reality of life in Westeros and beyond in that time.
    I'll say it again, Jorah is in love with Dani. But I love the fact that Drogon had to have already felt his mother's uneasiness and came back from where Tyrion and Jorah saw him in order for him to be there when she called him. The look on Dani's face as she rode off on Drogon was so... I have no words except that I believe there was some sort of communion going on between them. The author has never spelled out the relationship between dragons and their riders, but it is hinted that it can range from extremely close to bare tolerance to outright rejection. I'd say that Drogon is remembering he loves his mother now that he's growing past his terrible teens.

The 1st time was for the end scene of ep 2x04 of"The Wilds"and in both cases I'm like...WHY?And if for"The Wilds"a case can still be made,in GoT's case I'm *really* wondering why would you complain about a scene being"too graphic"since _it's GoT's thing!_ The fact that it's more brutal than any other show it's literally its trademark...I would understand complaining about the opposite..like..if,for example,at one point the show became as"vanilla"as an ordinary TV show I could understand people complaining because:"This is GoT,this is what I'm here for,why would you make it like any other show around?!?😠"but complaining about the very brutal/shocking factors the show is famous for?!?I don't get it.🤷‍♂Expecially because you said:"I had forgotten that Stannis saved Jon and The Watch from the Wildlings, and I had forgotten that Stannis gave Jon ships to rescue people from the Night King and his army, but I never have and never ever will forget that Stannis stood there and watched as his daughter burned alive and he was the one who agreed to it."and this,to me,PROVES that the scene did *exactly* what a powerful scene is supposed to do:BE MEMORABLE. The fact you're unable to forget it proves *that it's well done!* That it HAD to be made that way!!You are *not* supposed to FORGET a father letting his child burning alive...IT'S A GOOD THING that you are unable to forget it!!!...In my opinion.

Shirreen was burned at the stake just like hundreds of women were in reality for one reason - religion. They were burned for being "witches" (different) and Shirreen was burned because of her blood (princess), but in both cases it came about because of the religion (Lord of Light/God) as interpreted by the priest(ess) demanded it, and in many cases the families gave them over. In Greek mythology Agamemnon sucrificed his daughter before sailing to Troy, so that the wind would be in their favour. Also, in the Bible there's the story of Abraham who almost sacrificed his son bc God asked him to. It's terribly cruel but I think there's a deeper meaning to this scene. It's about the personal sacrifice that leaders have to do and the way fanatic faith plays with your mind. Stannis and the red woman represent both dimensions. Kings and people of power are privileged in a way that's inconceivable for 99.9% of the population, that has to comes with a great cost. As for the second aspect that is blind faith, if you truly believe in the God, any God, you would trust that whatever he commands is for the greater good.
    Also, it's always been weird to me that people hate so much on characters like Stannis's wife or Katelyn's sister etc. These are severly mentally sick people. It's not that I like them but I understand that there's sth really wrong with them.

    • @Silver_Owl
      @Silver_Owl Год назад +1

      You make an interesting point about power. I feel Stannis is wrong though because he's paying his debts with someone else's life. Shireen does not belong to him, her life is not morally his to give. His own life yes, he can offer that. Her life if she was willing, but she's clearly not. (Her remark about wanting to help can be disregarded - she clearly didn't intend this.) Even though it comes at an emotional cost to him, she's ultimately the one paying most.

    • @kated.4626
      @kated.4626 Год назад

      @@Silver_Owl You're right. Shireen is the one who's ultimately paying the most, unfortunately. The argument though about leadership and kingship remains the same. A leader's decision affects the life of many. Whether we like it or not. It's in the very nature of leading. A wrong decision will send many to their graves (children included). It's a huge responsibility. When you're responsible with the very fate of the world (Stannis thinks that he's the prince who was promised and can stop the White walkers threat), why the life of your daughter should be more important? It's the same argument Pycell I think makes about Danaerys in the council in the 1st season. The concept of sacrificing the one to spare the many is very controversial and in my opinion there's not an easy answer. Luckily, it's a dilemma that most likely only people of power might have to face. And here's where the great cost comes. When someone is given great privilege, when time comes he must pay the most for the greater good. I don't think Stannis minds dying but from his pov his death wouldn't save humanity. It would have been useless. Shireen was the only person he loved and he had to give her up. I've never liked Stannis and it feels weird to almost defend him. But I think that in good storytelling there's so much more to learn and to observe than simply making it personal and react as if it's real life. Stannis has always been dutiful. That's in the core of his character. I just think that people who call him straightforward evil are missing the point of his arc.
      Sorry for the long answer:)

    • @Silver_Owl
      @Silver_Owl Год назад +1

      @@kated.4626 No problem re the long answer, it's interesting, thanks! I agree with you that it's not a simple dilemma, and I agree re power. The question becomes at what point has a leader crossed the line - at what point does he no longer have the right? After all, a leader may liberate a willing people, and we'd say he was right - but that liberation may accidentally kill a civilian. Perhaps that's why Shireen's death comes across as so wrong - there's nothing accidental about it. She's not an unintended battlefield victim - she's a child being deliberately murdered. Yes, you're right, it's the same argument Pycelle made for killing Daenerys and her unborn child, and Ned rejected it, refusing to kill an innocent girl. But it's worth noting Varys and the other advisors agreed with Pycelle. I'm with Ned - deliberately murdering an innocent girl is a line that shouldn't be crossed, but you're right, it's not straightforward.
