I just heard this tune and it is love at first sight such amazing instrumental interplay or love at first listen lol I have listen to the guys for 45 yrs in there various configurations RTF. Jlp. I think its my favorite song right now. Such beauty. And yes its cool Al quotes layla. Such a master of the guitar love Stanley Clark. His solo is amazing. Love the unison stuff Al and JLP do. 10 stars on this one.

I saw JL-Ponty for the first time at the Cascais Jazz Festival, back in 1973(?)...got fan. And this theme from album AURORA, is just wonderful, to listen with the heart. I have the CD.
Thanks for posting this. The first time I saw JLP was front row in 1977. The Aurora tour, at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach-both shows- .Was a fan from his work with Zappa. I saw him a few years later at the Hollywood Bowl and then again after I moved to Portland at the Paramount and then at the Civic. His music and this song made me learn how to play guitar. JLP along with Allan Holdsworth, Return to Forever and Tony Williams Lifetime gave me the most inspiration. Please remember this was a time when the record companies and radio were ramming disco down our throats!!!! I still like to play along with them at home.
@@boweevil6442 I saw Rite of Strings at the Backyard 1995, the year it was released. I've only been there twice. Rite of Strings and Jethro Tull 2002. I didn't see SRV Town Lake 1990. The loss of old Austin and SRV are great tragedies. Had to leave my home town couldn't afford Austin, now live at the sacred spring where the temp is always the same.
Thank you for the music lessons. I’m finally playing with an accomplished violinist who can read the music and show me the guitar part in the familiar chorus/reprise. After 44 years Of knowing this song, I can play it and be really happy with it.
Wow this brings back memories of going through the used record bins in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Andreas Vollenweider, Jean Michael Jarre, Shadowfax, Windham Hill artists…..wow. Only a very few people understood. Saw JLP at Greek Theater-lots of goosebumps.
Love love LOVE ! The studio album is a masterpiece ! Wish they would record more ! Thank YOU for sharing because this song is SO enchanting among all of the others though this is a favorite also Memory Canyon. DiMeola's wink to Layla is grand !
It's hard to believe three people can be just one and play this marvel... and on scene, with the most absolute silence from the public... really, a rite of strings....
I have the CD of "Cosmic Messenger"...great stuff. Remember the days of "Return To Forever" and "Romantic Warrior"? My son and I saw Al a couple of years ago here in Portland, OR. My brain loves this so.
This Montreux concert from 1994 brings together 3 of the great talents of jazz fusion. Stars in their own right, Al Di Meola (guitars), Stanley Clarke (bass), and Jean-Luc Ponty (violin) reach new levels of virtuosity as a trio. A triad of mastery !
"Renaissance" has long been my favorite JLP composition, with the gorgeous Patrice Rushen piano solo on the Aurora album. This performance here is by FAR my favorite live performance. Di Meola channeling "Layla" just adds to the magic. So glad this video has returned to RUclips. For some reason, I couldn't find it over the past year or two. Grateful and blessed.
Every time I try to complain about a 4-chord-pop-tune and its inherent lack of sophistication I'm inevitably brought back here to remind me that i have no absolutes :=) thank you, boys!
I agree with busybody19 who said this: "OMG thank you so much for posting this ! it was posted before, but taken down and alot of people were looking for this master piece! I am so grateful to you for posting this, please keep it up. I am a huge fan of this song and Mr. Ponty" FUCK YEAH!
Well, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but from 4:38 I hear a bit of 'Layla' by Eric Clapton. Either way, a great piece and a fantastic concert with amazing musicians.
It was fun to hear DiMeola quote "Layla" in his solo, but it's not the way of jazz quotes & 'teases' to 'milk it' for quite so long... A couple bars is adequate.
One of the best string collaboration ever
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE ( NOT FOR EVERYBODY ) BUT FOR THOSE OF US WHO GET GOOSE BUMPS FROM THIS MUSIC WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES!!
I saw them live at the Jazz festival in Maastricht, they blew off our heads...
A classic never dies!!!
Che versione live spettacolare! Wow! Un trio magnifico!❤❤❤
stunning all three

One of mine favorite songs, you can hear why this was the jazz record of the year
Never gets old.
This is a great album, Ponty, DiMeola, Clarke, bought it the minute it came out and to this day I still need to hear it occasionally.
Those are three of the world's greatest musicians doing their thing and Jean Luc Ponty's composition takes on a whole new life in their hands.
Masterpiece Ostinato, with every conceivable variation to keep you guessing to the end. Just amazing what these three have done with four chords.
Jean-Luc, elegant as always. Wonderful interplay between 3 masters.
Marvellous marvellous masterpiece !
Beautiful composition.
Awesome. These guys are all geniuses.

Talent, it gets old
Amazing
Mesmerising; Intensely beautiful. I sometimes forgot how much I love Jean-Luc and then I hear this.

Cool.
That is cool.
Wow, the Golden Bear! I saw Tower of Power there 71. So cool you saw Jean Luc there!
Ah, try your luck don’t be a cluck! 🦆
Dear Jean Luc . You are such a great person....., what a wonderful playing. Fantastic spirit, armony and plentiness.
Absolument fantastique ! Meilleure interprétation encore que la version studio qui est déjà une merveille !
Merci Jean-Luc Ponty ! :)
Gracias JeanLucPonty for having taking us there...
Beautiful music.
This was my first sober concert. Austin Texas 1995. Bought the CD and got all three signatures. Gave it to my brother. Wonder if he still has it.
I borrowed it from your brother and never gave it back. Just kidding, it's an awesome cd.
I was there too! The acoustics at the Backyard are amazing. I tell anyone who will listen about that wonderful concert.
@@monabonejakon2797 Hes talking about the concert at city park I think , not Backyard . Were you at SRVs show at Town Lake 1990 ? Old Austin RIP.

This is my favorite Jean Luc Ponty song ... Every time I hear it, it brings forth such emotion in me ... Thank you for posting this !!!
Kurt matson turned me onto to all of these artists. Thank you Kurt! I miss you.

Saw this done with Return to Forever IV (Frank Gambale, Stanley, Jean-Luc, Lenny White on drums and Chick Corea), absolutely stunning.
Just _WOW!_ Love this song to pieces! lt sounds beautiful this way! Nice that Al throws in Layla too!
a modern masterpiece for sure. I have had the album Aurora for years & love the version of Renaissance on there, but this is also superb
Love love LOVE ! The studio album is a masterpiece ! Wish they would record more ! Thank YOU for sharing because this song is SO enchanting among all of the others though this is a favorite also Memory Canyon. DiMeola's wink to Layla is grand !
Just heard this on college radio here in Santa Clara, CA. Amazing stuff. I came straight to youtube to hear it again.
Still listening to this 1977 classic
Brought me to tears!!!!! Such a beautiful and mysterious song!!!! The original is great also!!!!
anyone that considers him/herself alive should be impressed to the tears of music like this
It's hard to believe three people can be just one and play this marvel... and on scene, with the most absolute silence from the public... really, a rite of strings....
great CD great tour

Merci.......
From the top tier of musicians playing acoustic... together.
Always loved it too...(so beautiful!)
saw this live many years ago in a small venue during our jazz fest....these guys are awesome
Al has the guitar playing at a sweet whisper. Loving it...
Raridade, excepcional e um prazer musical para os que apreciam a boa música!
When we all get to heaven, I hope the Good Lord will allow these guys and Mozart to collaborate with the angels for a welcome home concert for us all.
Thanks for the vid. Great music performed by great musos. I never got the chance to anything like this. Not many toured downunder. Mores the pity.
i totally agree. Al brings so much raw soul
Love this performance
C'est incroyable!

FUCK YEAH!
The guitarist is Al Di Meola. My favorite song from this album.
great version...
Unbelievable
Magic. Thanks for uploading this!
Timeless.
Me encanta! Espectacular!! Gracias!
Jolie citation de Layla d'Eric Clapton dans le solo d'Al di Meola. Les 3 musiciens sont les grands prêtres des cordes
Excellent!
Genios.
Genius (!) *****
Stanley & Jean were in Tony Williams Lifetime.
EARGASM!
Listen to JLP is the cheapest way to trip to another world!
Grande
4:38 Laaayla!!
those two guys backing him up ain't shabby...... (tee hee)
Well, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but from 4:38 I hear a bit of 'Layla' by Eric Clapton. Either way, a great piece and a fantastic concert with amazing musicians.
i heard it , good ear
Way cool.
Solamente El Major!!
💖
Dorian mode FTW!
Cosa dire? Fantastico
@TenuousHades
Judging from the "Layla" piece in his solo it has to be Eric Clapton....
yeah that's Return to Forever... not Rite of Strings... and RoS has also featured Bela Fleck... it's JLP and Stanley's project...
Thanks for this video of amazing music. Where was this concert, please?
SALUDOS de Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico
sick
nice layla tune at 5:00
Stanley Clarke amazing bassist!
Uma pena que nesta versão, não tenha o solo de piano, como na versão original, pois é maravilhoso.
In A·W·E ...
This should be one of the few videos to not get a 'Don't Like'. That'd be plain justice.
@farristurner its not clapton lol its a dude named meola
@HearthunterMMBN tell it like it is brother
It was fun to hear DiMeola quote "Layla" in his solo, but it's not the way of jazz quotes & 'teases' to 'milk it' for quite so long... A couple bars is adequate.
Al thought he was Eric for a minute lol
Molto meglio con Daryl Mark Stuermer, '76. Era più dentro con anima di Al Di Meola.
very nice but the original 1977 studio recording is much better
Bit Layla there
@TenuousHades Al di Meola
who is the guitarist?
Al Di Meola guitar, Stanley Clarke bass
