For today's 4MFS, we're lighting for story and location. It sounds pretty obvious, but holding those two key elements in high regard will lead to a great-looking sequence. The story is about a disguised hitman having breakfast, who is waiting for his target to show up at the diner. DP/host Kevin Reyes took the location and used the tools at his disposal to extend the natural look of daylight. The look is simple, but the setup is anything but. Kevin used separate daylight fixtures along with mirrors and mirror boards to shape the sun coming into the diner. He also had to cheat a shot for the location and story. All-in-all, here is everything you need to know about covering an interior daytime scene.

At first I was thinking it was overkill to pump so much light into that back window. But when the talent walked through the door as was immediately illuminated in sillouette, it made sense. Great example of using the tools of filmmaking the further the story.

Amazing level of detail in this scene. If in a hurry, I would just light with a soft source from inside, wrapping around the face and use a hard light with a spotlight lens shining from outside through the window in the back. Then neg as you did. Great look!

Fantastic guys!! I straight up thought the first few seconds were from a movie!
If I were to light a daytime diner scene, I would light the inside with tons of practicals, neon signs and lamps. I might try using a spotlight fixture to cast shapes onto the talents face, then perhaps another one to act as passing cars, as if the sun light's reflecting off of the passing cars onto the talent.
Well, this is nice. At first I thought it was overkill to put that many 600 for that scene but the result speak for itself. Thank you guys, I learn more from you than from my actual teachers;)
Just wrapped on a film (I was one man G&E dept) where we did a daytime bar scene (no diners in this one). We found that the practical lights in the bar (small track lights above the back-bar) worked perfectly as key lights for our actors since there was no space for putting any lights where we couldn't see them. But we did some rim lights with a couple Aputure 200d's with the Light Dome II on them to keep from feeling too sourcey.
Cant lie, I was super jelly of all the lights production had, at some point maybe I'll gather together all that lovely gear (and maybe even have a place to store it all)!
You guys did so well lighting this scene!! I would light with a harsh light shining on the actor's chest and below for more contrast. Keep the soft on his face. Neg fill the close-up to maintain contrast as you did and I love the back you paired with haze. SO MUCH DEPTH!! Love the vibes in a diner!

Really nice video! I would love to see more!! I would just light with a soft source from outside to the person, plus negativ fill from the inside and the key practial would shine from the back right into the cam that the anamorph sprays an incredible flare if he watches right.

Timely episode for me. I have a daylight interview shoot coming up at a restaurant on the river here. So not only daylight but potential for random lighting coming off the water too.
I would want to add a scene where I used my 60x to create a spotlight effect when he sees his target and have him do a quick internal monologue about what his options are now. I can’t think of much more creative lighting wise that you guys didn’t do. It just looks absolutely perfect.

I like these videos! Fun and informative and you give voice to gaffers and grips which is really cool. I must admit it, I lose hair over seeing 40k$ cameras on 300$ tripods..!
When I get a chance to light anything it’s my lovely 200d mk 2 with a bounce for fill. I’d love a nice point light or hair light too. My work is done in a hurry so that’s often all I get to work with.
I would light it with a harsher light to mark the shade of the shade on the actor's face. I would use a slightly warmer light to help me demonstrate that the sun had just come up.
I would do a combo of the hard lights coming from outside, and then some cove lighting to get an ultra smooth roll off into the negative fill. I’m a low budget guy so I’m big on bounce, because it’s cheaper than more lights!
Anamorphic serves the scene! ❤️👌
I would block every light in the room with is not from the window behind our talents. Then I would use mirrors ( because I don't have any lights )to get the sulight where I want it to be. For the close-ups I would use reflectors and negative fill to wrap the light around the faces

I would go with some ambient fill for inside but also using some of the retro lights you find in some old diners. At the end I would care a little bit less about overexposing the outside, I guess. Can create nice faded color. Not completely, of course....
Due to the fact that I don't have that many lights, I'd go for something similar, but maybe with just using the key light. This video shows, that not much is needed to let something look good. Maybe just brighten up the too dark foreground a bit and there you go. Cool video!
Though there are some simple things to do to achieve this kind of look, this needs wisdom. Great work guys 👍

Echoing other praises, these results look amaaazing. Im not so sure this video had much to do with natural daylight though. Might want to call it “filming a diner scene?”
I always get new ideas from watching these Aputure videos, and I really enjoy the presentations. But come on guys. Most folks who are watching these vids are probably gearing up to shoot a micro budget indie with a two person crew using one or two small LED lights and a few bounce cards at best. And the camera is probably an iPhone or a used DSLR. It would be nice if Aputure could put together some vids with that crowd in mind, using one or two of their cheapest lights, a bounce card a GH4 with a kit zoom. In the right hands, they can get stellar results.
When doing daylight scenes inside like this, I also like to have the talent near the window to use natural light, exposing for the outside, and then lighting the inside accordingly. Although occasionally, for stylized shots, I don’t mind overexposing the outside to have the window more washed out.

It would be nice to also use lower end cameras, like Pocket 4/6K or equivalent, since most indie filmmakers use these kinds....
They only work with Alexa's and use lights that cost well over £2000 each. And don't get me started on their cinema lens. It's phoney stuff.

@@AnimeZone247 A lot of this stuff cannot be done unless you use these expensive lights, rigs and diffusers. Yes, the concept is important but then why use over expensive equipment to showcase those ideas???
@@bluefilmsltd that’s the thing it can be done. You don’t need an arri Alexa with a zeiss anamorphic lens to get this shot done
@@AnimeZone247 Of course not but you DO need 300w or more of lighting power and a good amount of them in addition to rigs and that costs a lot of money
My experience is, if you are filming in smaller rooms and you don't have space for larger setups, a shining computer monitor can also be a helpful light source.
Many people on here have already made some good points. The shot looks good. Using a few outdoor lights to punch up the natural look. Use a little less fog. Feels too soft for my taste.

you can get cans of haze, aerosol, that you can spray into a room. Not too expensive.

I would probably want to use a couple aputure 120ds to light the subject and background for that early sunrise look as well as some haze to give it volume!:)
Great video, some of the best frames I've seen from this channel.
I've had several experiences where I want to supplement natural light in a scene like this, but have actually taken away my artificial lights and gone with nothing more than natural sun light and negative fill and have been happier with the result. Time of day, location, and bounce from the table all factor in, but sometimes you can even get away with nothing but the sun and duvetyne, maybe some diffusion, but not always necessary!

When I think American diners, I think Neon signs. Chuck in some haze...boom , my lighting plan! :)
To be honest its very easy to say "do something similar" or light from outside and wrap with a bounce/shape with negative fill. But what if we had some fun and played with a different style? I would love to pull some 3 point lighting type stuff as if we were in a 50's style lighting set up. A play on the whole classic americana setting.
Thanks for the continued awesome content on this channel. I wouldn't light a diner because I don't see how to fit a piano in there. But I'd love to be entered in your drawing as I'm about to get two cob 60x's and a p60x for my home studio and that mc would really help.
I guess a basic three point lighting set with a lot of negative fill and purple and green gels for colour contrast like gun powder milkshake!!

With the budget I can manage I would use only reflectors for this scene. And a touch less fog.
I’d do it similar to Thelma and Louise where there is lots of hard lights being pushed through the windows with lots of haze, and very subtle and soft ambient fill in order to allow the camera to roam throughout the space
Sometimes there are coloured windows in those diners. By using these I'd really like to do a scene fully tinted for example in the colour red.
what lighting setup would completely eliminate skin glare? a really big softbox or bouncing light away from the subject onto a big reflector, or something else?
Never have lit a dinner. That said, pulp fiction diner scenes comes to mind. This example seems a lil bit more stylized and a more serious tone which I prefer.

Id go from the "Sunlight" Version. just sprinkle a few practicals in the Background and add haze. thats It. I love the dark moody look the before image has. It has the "lurking in the dark" vibe that fits the story so well. to make his face appesr even darker one can add a slash of light scross the table and his body (not the face).
I think one thing I would have done, despite the general tone of the hitman-crime story, is put it in a more lively, colorful scene. I think the seedy diner fits into the world takes away some tension, story-wise. Placing the tension of a hit in a normal, unsuspecting setting brings back character and setting tension. Not the time or place, as they say.

felt a little to LIT for my tastes..
the natural look with the lights off and just the sun coming in looked the best.. you could basically juice this up with bounced light vs direct light from outside.. also warming the lights up.. the 600d's bare looked a little strange. inside you would only need a some overhead fill.. maybe some practicals to make it interesting
I would shoot it at night with a lot of neon lights. Also make the windows wet for dramatic effect.

I would try and create a nice contrast between the outside and inside. I’d probably have it a little darker inside and use some of the neon as practicals and get a bit of colour on the characters using the Nova P300 and P600 lights 👊🏼

I’d light a daytime dinner with a hazer, some 600 ds, blasting through diffusion, and black duvetine. But Tarantino style with lots of tension filled dialogue.
I've never shot with a budget so I try to keep a low dynamic range and I shape it in post. Yes - I know - not entirely acceptable!

Everything is amazing except for one thing. On the wide shot,the distance from him and the window is short. So he can simply stretch his hand and peep out. But on the POV shot,he leans too much to peep outside, betraying the wide shot
The lighting looks awesome as always. However, I felt that the hitman did not really have the right facial expression. At first I thought that he was the victim, since he looked kinda scared and nervous.

I would play with my ND filters then give up and go watch more Aputure tutorials
I clearly wouldn't light as well as that but I would try to shoot that scene night for day to control sans the grip...of grip. Or if need be, I'd nd all of the windows to help reduce the appearance of the sun moving during a short scene. I'm no pro (yet!) so this may seem...unprofessional.
Of course if I had some 600s at my disposal, I wouldn't need the sun. We shot a music video with one a week ago...35%...upstairs...through a window...through diffusion...still lit an entire auditorium. I have an Amaran 100d coming Thursday and I can barely sleep with anticipation.
