We've just rented our first house in Greece long-term. We're 47 and 39 years old. We didn't expect it to do it so early in life, but life isn't forever...so do it while you can!

2004. I saw the Olympic runner bring the flame to the top of the hill above Chania, before taking it to Athens. Old men and women crying as they threw olive branches in his path. I will never forget it.
The white houses in the islands with pink flowers outside, the sea as a view and a chill breeze hitting your face in the morning is to this day my peak Greek experience. Close second come the culinary experiences in local taverns all over the country. Greece is truly an amazing place to live. I just with we had some money to enjoy it. hahaha
Crete is a magical place. Good place for painting too, really any art form. The roads are bordered with oleander, which is poisonous. Apparently it keeps the goats at a respectful and life-affirming distance from traffic. People in Crete have their own olive trees and press their own olive oil. The stuff for sale is good, but it's for export and tourists. We loved Crete.
Something very nice also are the fields of orange trees in winter till April in the south-west of Chania (around Fournes and Skines). And what a perfume have the flowers in April !
What an exstremely beautiful video!!! I'm watching from Norway. Been to Greece many times, lived in Rhodos for 6 months but Crete only visited one time in 2010. I did not see even 2 % of what you have, but you know, 2 weeks is not enough to see it all. And I was not traveling with an explorer friend...she wanted sun and sea and thats it. I had to run fast to keep up with her, while a photographer needs time. I am thinking of moving to Greece, because of all the greek " family" we now have there. We have been in 2 greek weddings and lots of birthday parties. Sadly I did not make movies like now, at that time. I mostly photograped. I only have a few movies filmed with a huge camera, not like now where I use my phone to do everything. I was not comfortable speaking in my movies till 2016. In my own language. I loved watching your video. You are so very right about Crete. I visited Crete 2 times, last year and two weeks ago. This year I visited Chrissi Island, I've never seen a place so beautiful like this. And I loved Matala too, I visited it last year and also, this year.
We went and stayed in Hania and loved every moment we was there. While there we spent lovely days swimming in th sea at Nea Chora in the middle of October. Last year we couldn't return as flights where cancelled to chania, so we went ibstead to Rhodos which we didn't like much at all. So Crete spoilt us big time. Next September we are heading back to Hania and we can't wait. If we can get enough money together we would buy a small place in the old town Heaven on earth.!!!
Crete is probably my favourite island in Greece, although, I do really like Rhodes too, not to mention several of the smaller islands, Hydra, Symi, Paros, etc. I first visited Crete in 1976 when I hitch-hiked from England to Athens. Went to Matala and stayed in the caves :-) I enjoy your videos and soft, seductive, spoken voice...what is your ethno-cultural background? it's hard to place your accent (aside the US influence)..which is rather unusual for me, as I can normally tell right away having travelled very extensively for 6 decades. Greece (and Israel) are my two favourite locations in the Mediterranean region.. I do love Greek food...however, my Greek wife Chrysoula and I actually prefer the Israeli cuisine at restaurants, cafes, etc., simply because the vegan options are absolutely endless in places like Tel Aviv. We have been plant-based for almost 50 years and are happy to see that Greece is finally starting to catch up with vegan dishes being offered in Athens and some other places. Of course, many traditional Greek dishes are vegetable based so it's not difficult to make a few quick adjustments at home in order to make them 100% vegan. My favourite Greek word-concept is "philotimo" (look it up)
Oh wow, that is the most awesome comment I have ever received on my channel. I want to get back to you with my reply. Be right back, need to finish another video meanwhile :) You're awesome!
I looked up philotimo - thank you, it's great to add such a positive word to my vocabulary and very apt, as I plan to visit Taki's Shelter on Crete. Taki certainly has philotimo (is that the correct way to use it?). Also it is amazing to hear that you and your wife have been plant-based for so long, you truly have lived according to the principle of ahimsa (at least in that aspect). You sound like you've had an amazing life (so far)!

Hi, there is no right or easy answer for your question... The best thing to do is to stay at least a few days in each area that you find interesting for you. Just keep in mind that most of the touristic area dedicated to beach tourism are not so lovely during winter. The walking distance to the beach thing... This might costs you more than it might worth... Personally I really don't mind driving as long as the location I'm in brings me peace and quiet. I loved Chania the most, as a city, for the vibes, people and food. I would start looking around that area, but there are many other options out there. Start from one place and then ask the locals where to go next, they'll be more than happy to guide you. Cheers and good luck!
