Wow, rare video from an odd time in their history. When I saw this tour in Chicago, you could feel the audience grow restless. First Sonic Youth show I'd seen where the crowd left disappointed. IMHO all that SYR stuff should have been left back in the rehearsal room. I think they were trying to regain some of their avant cred after Goo and Dirty, but as improvisers they couldn't quite cut it.
Lars Vogel most of there songs came from improvising, all the songs off of a thousand leaves you could hear on the SYR albums! I really enjoyed this era. I think the reasoning behind playing just the new album was because they where bored of playing the old stuff. A lot of bands go through that.
