Was this taken as a DI (or direct output even) from the pedal? It sounds really dry
We took an XLR straight out FM9
@@premierguitar Ahh that will explain it. No idea what it was like in person but I imagine it would have sounded a little more natural if you mic'ed it instead as dry patches are made to incorporate room noise but you would probably emulate that on direct patches for recording otherwise it sounds a little ... unnatural.
A wizard is never all analog or digital; he plays precisely what he needs to.
Well stated Doc. To choose one or the other would limit creativity.
Myself, for the last 46 years of playing I've been a analog-guy, that said, I'm totally open to these newer digital rigs.
My only complaint, I've been playing through the same Fender Twin Reverb I purchased new back in 1976, I just can't imagine these modern processors lasting that long without totally failing. Again, that just goes to my age and mind-set, newer products are not designed to last very long as regular updating of equipment is now the norm. Phones, computers and even vehicles are no longer designed to last very long as they'll be left behind due to technology advancements.
And that is my crux, I have a difficult time spending what some would consider a significant investment for a product designed to be replaced within 5 to 10 years.
All that being said, the flexibility and creative possibilities are amazing, not to mention that Twin Reverb of mine isn't getting any lighter to carry!
Nice Gandalf joke.
@@TheCyberMantis Indeed yes.
And to be fair, there are worse things to be called than Gandalf. Of course, there is Gandalf the Gray and Gandalf the White! LOL To continue this, if Gandalf played guitar he would be fortunate to play as well as Mr. Govan.
It’s just sent to him by the gods and he makes do
Great comment
01:17 It’s rare to see Guthrie speaking proudly about himself.
He seems really proud to be working with Hans Zimmer on these film scores :)
Hans Zimmer couldn’t have chosen a better musician to work with.
I've never heard of him speak out of context.
I think he was just preluding the conversation with the fact that he was able to do those sound effect with a digital fx.
Up
The fact Guthrie played the bagpipes in Dune with his guitar is absolutely mind-blowing for me...that was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, mainly because of the epic score
What scene is it actually?
@@dimi409 I suppose the one when the Atreides family lands on Arrakis for the first time with their huge ships
@@dimi409 when they arrive to Arakis and Josh Brolin and his army walk outside the ship
@@anubisrocker Ok, amazing stuff!
A mind blower from a wizard guitarist.
I’ve seen people with huge set ups do nothing, and then there’s Guthrie whom will blow your mind with that pedalboard and couple of guitars. The Aristocrats show was worth every penny.
But what's inside a fm9 is bigger than any huge setup...
The company that makes that pedalboard "Fractal Audio" makes the best sounding equipment in the industry. That's why all the big guys use it. It sounds amazing and you don't have to lug a bunch of heavy ass tube amps and cabs around. In-turn it saves you money, time and you get the same exact sound at every gig. What else could a person want? :)
@@Funny-bf8xf Pretty sure the big guys use Helix and Quad cortex as much though. They all sound great
Fractal isn't just some kids toy...they produce the best modellers on the planet. Plus a lot of big name guitar players are using modellers and plug ins these days

So So SO glad Guthrie is back on social media. He's the only guitarist, other than Robert Fripp, who made me want to practice. Guthrie, you are guitar!
You should just want to practice. ThT is when you're "in tune" with the universe.
Guthrie can play thru literally ANYTHING and sound amazing.
the greatest living guitarist!
Yup. He can connect into a concrete wall and tear it up!
No way. He sounds the worst he has ever sounded imo with this . He needs to go back to amps and pedals . He doesn’t even come close to sounding the same imo
@@peezymeds1580 Maybe you're forgetting that on stage, even real amps and cabs are mic'd into the P.A. And this is what the audience hears-- a mic'd amp and cab. Not the same. And yet it still sounds great.
Also, anyone can play though a FM3, FM9 or Axe FX II and sound amazing. They pretty much play themselves.
A truly fantastic guitarist. A technical master whose virtuoso skills don't drown out the simple beauty of music.
exactly, he's pretty much perfect in that sense
I've been building tube amps since the 80s so I am old school. But I have to admit, I absolutely love my Headrush. I think we can have both.
Amazing to hear an old school tube guy compliment the digital approach with the Headrush. Good on you for your objectivity!
Guthrie’s own Gandalf comment is hilarious considering he IS the grand wizard of the fretboard. Dude can sound like and play anything he wants. Truly one of the most amazing musicians of modern time.
We got a few wizards out there. Guthrie, Petrucci, Romeo, Loomis, Kiko.... etc.

I played a modeler straight to PA with a symphony in Puerto Rico
... and what Guthrie says about the sound guys and stage volume is bang on. You just have to remember to use the high and low cuts otherwise you're going to get a lot of foul looks from the sound police. The hardest part of the gig was knowing full well that what I was hearing through my in ears was NOT what the audience was hearing. That was a little alienating, but if you're a "pro", you'll ride it out and concentrate on playing the right notes with the right picking dynamics. That's what really matters.
Guthrie Govan is a musician which has a marvelous intellect, well spoken and when he touches the guitar; the angels sings.
The timing of this Rundown couldn’t be better, just the other day I’d just been Googling what rig Guthrie had been running on this latest run of Aristocrats shows after spotting there was no traditional guitar cab behind him.
Guthrie could play anything and make it sound incredible but the dichotomy of his modern fully digital and compact setup on one side of the stage and Bryan’s utterly old school mega stack of doom is pretty cool!
Time to step up the game for Rig Rundowns when modelers are involved.
For example, an AxeFx can be (and often is) the whole artist's rig, similarly to this case.
Even though it is contained in a single unit, conceptually it is still a signal out of a guitar and into a rig made of pedals, amps, cabs, microphones, just like a real one.
Artist : "I'm using an AxeFx (or any other modeler)"
PG:
Q1 "what amps/models are you using, what for?"
Q2 "Are you trying to reproduce the rigs/tones used on X album or do you have a different approach?"
Q3 "Stock IR cabs, Third party, custom made by yourself, what cabs and speakers?"
Q4 "For rhythm/lead/clean work, do you switch patches/amps or keep the same one but turn on/off pedals, boosters etc, or do you use mainly your guitar volume to control saturation?"
Pretty much the same as a physical rig.
Considering how much time Guthrie spent toying with this unit during lockdown, his unique and varied experience, the way he plays, and how articulate he is when explaining what he does, this could have been a goldmine of information (and also huge advertisement for Fractal Audio :D ).
I used to be opposed to digital modelers until someone reframed my thinking on them. They’re not supposed to sound like a live rig; they’re supposed to sound like a mic’d up rig through your monitors. That being said, digital is so versatile and simple, it really makes sense for any situation where you’re playing through a decent sound system.
I'm pretty sure the FM3 has separate outputs for you to send to FOH and your amp simultaneously with the cab+power amp turned off on one of them. So it can do either or both if you prefer that.
@@plumbummusic2051 It does, and i use it that way.
Just got back from Vai Academy and went to 3 of Guthrie’s masterclasses! He is the man! Such a good dude and shared everything about his tone, technique, approach to improvising, etc. His jam with Steve was the highlight of this years Vai Academy imo. Definitely considering getting an FM9 now. Thanks for sharing this.
Any videos of this 🤔
THAT WAS HIM doing the bagpipes thing on Dune?!?!? Amazing! Loved that piece.
Glad to hear him say how HAPPY he his with his current rig. At the end of the day that’s what this is about right?

He's not precious.
I wouldn't have predicted Guthrie working with Hans Zimmer as an outcome, but it just feels correct. They do amazing work together!
I finally got me a Helix about 6 months ago. At first it's mind numbing all the choices and options you have at your feet. But once you get the hang of it and get comfortable, there's no going back. And this isn't some multi-effects board like a Pod or anything you ever had. These are studio quality models. The sounds are stunning. I took 34 pedals to my local Guitar Center and sold them ALL. I only have the Boss TU 3 left.
I got a Helix a while back too. The thing I love about it, is the intuitive interface. You can use it without having to read the manual every 5 minutes.
@@zedcarr6128 Exactly. At first I was like "holy shit, I will NEVER understand this thing" and 2 weeks later I am flying around, creating scenes, snapshots, etc. like I made the thing.
Friggin sellout
Yes! In my case I have a Fractal and an Eventide, which, between the ,2 give me an entire galaxy of sounds. Consequently, I only have a few effects pedals-- ones that are very unique that the Fractal and Eventide don't do.
@@stevedrake360 Uh, I'm curious. What are those few effect pedals that Fractal and Eventide can't do. And are you talking about the kinda old Eventide H9 Max?
No matter how many times you hear it, it never gets old. It's the player 1st. then the gear.
So many guitarist think they sound great by letting you know what vintage pedals they got but you have to be able to play, then play well to know the sound you want in your head.
You watch everyone switch to digital now that Guthrie's done it. 😆
Well to be fair, Fractal already is used in countless Arena and Stadium rigs around the world (Metallica, Deff Leppard, Journey). It's hard to beat honestly. Every amp and effect in the world at your disposal, and they are 100% consistent in sound nightly with zero maintenance. And for small tours like the Aristocrats, you can't top the convenience of being able to carry your whole guitar rig around in a backpack. Especially when most of their gigs are fly-in one nighter's or single bus tours that are hitting smaller venues.
As if it wasn't already hard enough to get an FM9. Now we for sure won't ever be able to get one.
@@TheCyberMantis Meh, just an Axe-FX 3 and an FC-12. That's what I did. Wouldn't trade it for the world. :)
@@brianjones8432 I will wait for the FM9.
But that was never mentioned in this video.. And i've never heard anyone try and elevate their guitar playing stature by boasting about pedals either. Literally your whole comment is based on an idea you have in your head, and not on reality...
My admiration for this wonderful human being is always growing. I love listening to him open his world of perception to us through his eloquently crafted words and compositions. What lucky souls we are to live concurrently with such a marvel!
So did he switch to digital before or after battling the Balrog?

Loving the hair! Makes the playing sound even more magical!
This interviewer sounds like he couldn't care less. Which is sad because of how utterly incredible Guthrie Govan is and how much he can share
I noticed that as well. Huge scandal.
This interview seems really rushed. Don't know if it's because some time constraints or if the interviewer just couldn't care less...
@@heavydiscotrip4846 Yes indeed, and i dont like it. Guthrie is such a giving person besides his brilliant playing.
ultimate respect for guthrie work and humbleness. love how he dedicates to every piece of his craft.
Wow, the stage is so clean.
There's a violinist featured on the new album Duck, and for live shows he's been playing her parts using a modeled something that sounds like violin and it's so incredibly cool.
I would love to see a segment from Guthrie about how he programmed his amp sounds. Things sound killer here and he always has a solid take on dialing shit in
Right? To me it looks like he really spends a lot of time playing and creating patches
Guthrie is such a treat, he even knows about the Gandalf jokes. Legend.
Awesome! Thanks for interviewing him!
The more techical and busy the the playing, the less important the tone is, so it's not surprised that so many technical players are going this way.
It has nothing to do with how busy or technical the music is. It's all just a matter of how good the Amp modeling is now. And Fractal has nailed it. Guys like Neil schon from Journey, Phil Collin and Viv from Deff Leppard are all using essentially this same rig in arenas and stadiums as well. You can't beat being able to carry around this kind of versatility in tone, and you can't match the consistency with tube amps.
Possibly the only thing I could have heard today that would make me think I ought to check out the Dune reboot was learning the GG worked on the soundtrack.
Guthrie Govan is such gentleman!!
As a guy who just plays casual guitar, I sold all my analogue gear and went with a Line 6 Helix Floor, never been happier with the sounds I get.
I stood right in front of Guthrie at the Phoenix, AZ show and he sounded great! The rig is simple and compact and the tones he used sounded Great!
I was one of the lucky ones and received my invite early on! All I can say is for those that are still waiting it won't be in vain especially now that you guys will be getting a little extra HP under the hood!
too short, i want more sound demos, that rig sounded great from the bit i heard!
I’m an old dude who has been doing the tube amp/conventional pedalboard thing for decades. I read up on, and see the demos of these digital units all the time, and I know that the tide is turning. I have often tinkered with the idea of getting one of these units to try out, but being an old dude I am intimidated by the technology ie: menus, programming and whatnot. I also find myself “gig less” right now so……..
But I was recently down in Nashville and I saw a lot of bands. Most of the guitar players I saw had one of these types of units and was going direct. And in THAT environment I totally get it. Humping gear up and down Broadway, through crowds, upstairs, quick set up and breakdown, maybe a couple of times a day…..it makes sense. If I was doing that drill on a regular basis, I’d probably have one too. But having said that, I DID see a small handful of players with the conventional amp/pedalboard set up and u you can just hear and feel the difference. Everyone in the venues were all still enjoying the music and having a great time so it’s all relative. I’d still like to try one someday.
I went all Boss Katana and no pedals now! Just sat down with laptop and programmed some settings been great no patch cables extra power supplies or batteries!
Yeah……the Katana is another one I’ve eyed up. That one I at least was able to tinker around with at a local guitar shop. Sounded good and looks simple enough to navigate.
The Fractal stuff really is a cut above the rest. I highly recommend it. The feeling of moving air on stage can still be replicated in many ways, never mind the simple addition of a great set of ears, but to have the ability to carry around that much variety in a backpack now is kind of unbeatable. To each his/her own, but the years of having to drag around a heavy and finicky tube amp or half/full stack are thankfully behind us.
Oh yes!!!! Amazing sound from an amazing guitarist!!
i HAD NO IDEA HE SOUNDED LIKE THAT WHEN HE TALKS!! trippy.. i love this cat sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much
The humanity need more videos from this genius, more lessons , music and interviews for the future generations!!
Guthrie is the Chuck Norris of guitarists 🤘
Just had conformation that my FM9 will be ready to despatch in September - soooo excited. FM3 now sold and currently using a POD-GO for the time being, which is to be fair a cracking unit. Got some real cool tones out of it :)
Hey folks just attended a live show. Yes if anyone can make the Fractal work it is Guthrie however I noticed and again take this with a grain of salt, his solos during many instances were piercing my ears something I never experienced with his amp rig. Still sounded great and for many other things. Not gonna lie I’m an amp guy but the fractal really did serve his purpose for the aristocrats and I’m sure it can do way more. Less tap dancing for Guthrie for sure. As always this man is a gentleman, and one of the best guitarists right now. All in all the show was amazing!
If you guys haven’t, you should also get Bryan Beller’s rig rundown for the Aristocrats gigs as well. His pedalboards are huge, the live tone is insane, and he’s got many bells and whistles on there this time around. If you do, please get some amazing mics for it. The amount of frequencies he covers is immense and I’ve never hear a single recording do his live sound justice.
I finally got a line 6 pod go to simplify. I have two half stack tube amps in stereo with a stereo pedal rack with a midi foot controller. I soldered all the cables and wired it up myself. To jam I have to switch on the rack, switch on rack units, pull out two drawers and turn on pedals, toggle the midi controller to another preset and back to initialize all the hardware midi, switch on amp 1, switch on amp 2, again toggle presets to initialize the amp head midi, switch amp 1 off standby, switch amp 2 off standby... then I'm ready to jam and put hours on the tubes that eventually have to be replaced. The Pod Go is a single switch to turn it on, because it's plugged into a powered 12" speaker that is always on. It sounds great, my only gripe is I can't get feedback out of it like a real amp. But feedback swell is something I only do for like one song
I miss this content with Guthrie so much. Love It!
EXCELLENT - Finally something new from the best guitarist on planet earth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guthrie Govan is a very slim guy, isn't he...?
I really hope he is eating and drinking enough.
CHEERS.
I’ve owned a high end modeler for many years but keep it in my studio. I switched to a Headrush Gigboard for gigs and it makes everything much easier. The sounds are more than good enough and setup is easy. I was spending too much time switching programs while performing. The audience doesn’t care about the gear. If you’re playing blues then a tube amp is perfect but if you’re playing a variety of styles a modeler will open up new sonic opportunities.
Just by listening to him talk, it's better than most guitar solos tone. This man has soothing voice. He should narrate a documentary film.
In the band I switched to digital (HELIX) just because of simplicity..I mean..you walk on stage, place the Helix, use one cable for the FOH, plug your guitar...and you are good to go...no cab, amp board, cable dance..setup takes 2 Minutes
I love my Helix. And I have always been into tube amps. But they stay at home and I save my energy.
@@StratsRUs yeah my wall of amps stays safe in my studio..lol. And if the Helix is set up correctly it just sounds easily 98% like the "real deal"
My only worry is being able to hear myself. I always feel I have to have a cab onstage

As good as his playing is, he's become a great personality more than ever. I think he needs to do more 'podcasts & talkshows' based around guitar but with no guitar in his hands. He is hilarious!
My mind has been absolutely blown finding out that epic bagpipe charge in Dune was Guthrie on guitar
Reminds of my old friend and guitarist Eric, kinda, he rocked, miss him, but hey now there’s Gran Hechicero

What a great, balanced take on digital FX. If it musically gets you where you want to go, have at it. Coming from someone like GG, it's more evidence digital guitar FX work in the context of the desired end result.
Guthrie's actually film credited in both Dune and Top Gun: Maverick working in conjunction with Hans Zimmer. Well deserved!!

Interesting. All just tools in the toolbox IMO.
I think if you want / need a wide range and variety of sounds, modeling is the way to go. So many options available.
Not anywhere near Govan's level of playing or venues, but I currently have several rigs for different situations:
1) GT-1000 direct rig; 2) SY-1000 direct rig; 3) Versatile amp rig (Catalyst 100 + HX Effects); 4) core tone amp rig (Marshall Origin 50C + HX Effects); 5) Metal amp rig (Engl dual 100W rack rig + HX Effects).
Of these, I use my SY-1000 direct rig and Marshall Origin 50C + HX Effects the most. The Catalyst 100 + HX Effects is more for clean, ambient tones. Probably going to sell the GT-1000 and Engl rigs.

I’ve been on the FM9 waiting list for quite some time- after 50 some years of gigging with a 2/12 amp and a bunch of pedals, I really want to create new sounds. More and more times, the sound man at gigs that provide pa and a sound man find my guitar just too loud and hard to control
The problem is the sound guy. And the venue. And the band. Do what i do. Stay home and play tube amps alone in the basement. Best tone of my life

Where are the promised Gandalf jokes? The video has been up for almost an hour!
i slept in!
I was just listening to this while loading the dishwasher and realized that Guthrie sounds just like Derek Smalls 😁. Similar philosophy on life and music as well!
Using a guitar synth you absolutely need a full frequency speaker array. At that point tube guitar amps are not sufficient for good representation of what you're attempting to accomplish.
3:35 what a sound! What effects were even used on that thing?
A total genius!!!
I saw him 3 weeks ago with that rig when I was looking for his Victory amp & realized Guthrie has found another way to downsize again & still sound amazing.
I own an AXE FX III. NOW, if I can just play like Guthrie. Should take me a month or so. 🙂 BTW, please excuse my profound ignorance, but I was unaware of Guthrie until a few weeks ago. Rick Beato brought me here. That is why Rick is so important, as he constantly exposes his viewers to new ideas, new people, and teaches, all at the same time.
Gandalf sounds good Guthrie. Not just for your hair, but because you are truly a wizard
The frustration forum dwellers feel when they see a guitarist objectively more skilled than them using gear they deem unacceptable is honestly hilarious
People will have the audacity to only ever play in their room then go and tell a world touring Guitarist how a rig should be made😂
