  • In this video, we take a cross-continental trip to examine the PEBC in Canada and the KAPS in Australia.
In Canada, pharmacists pursuing licensure take tests conducted by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC). In Australia, the Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences (KAPS) conducted by the Australian Pharmacy Council is mandatory for accreditation as a pharmacist.
PEBC in Canada: The PEBC exam is mandatory for pharmacists to obtain authorization and start practising in Canada. It consists of the Qualifying Exam Parts I and II, the Evaluating Exam, and the OSCE, which assesses practical skills in a clinical setting.
    Eligibility for PEBC:
    • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (PharmD or BPharm) from a recognised institution.
    • Proficiency in either English or French, evaluated through IELTS or TOEFL.
    • Hands-on training with a certified pharmacist.
    • Compliance with the Document Evaluation process of PEBC.
KAPS in Australia: KAPS is a pathway for a Skills Assessment Outcome to get registered and start working as a pharmacist in Australia. The exam includes Part I (MCQs focusing on pharmaceutical sciences) and Part II (OSCE focusing on practical clinical scenarios).
    Eligibility for KAPS:
    • Pharmacy degree from outside of Australia.
    • Evaluation through IELTS or TOEFL.
    • Minimum period of supervised practice in a clinical setting.
    Comparative Summary
    • Regulatory Body: The PEBC is governed by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada, while the KAPS is regulated by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
    • Goal: The PEBC aims to licence pharmacists in Canada, whereas KAPS focuses on registering pharmacists in Australia.
    • Exam Structure: The PEBC includes the Qualifying Exam Parts I and II, the Evaluating Exam, and the OSCE. The KAPS consists of Part I (MCQ) and Part II (OSCE).
    • Content: Both exams cover pharmacology and therapeutics, but the PEBC also emphasizes pharmacy law and pharmaceutics, while the KAPS includes pharmacy practice and ethics.
In this video, we take a cross-continental trip to examine the PEBC in Canada and the KAPS in Australia, two of the most well-known pharmacy licence tests. Stay tuned till the end and decide your career wisely.

The PEBC pathway is quite expensive and long, making it less attractive for immigration. The weather conditions in Canada are also harsh. On the other hand, the KAPS pathway in Australia is shorter, less expensive, and provides an easier transition to permanent residency.
