Thanks for these amazing care instructions for the El Chico Red. I have 3 of these plants hanging in my kitchen facing east. Do they make a liquid worm castings? For say leca or any other semi hydroponics setting? Maybe it's time for me to do some research lol.

Heya Ari, you are welcome. I'm glad you found this video useful! Yes worm castings are good, I actually need to get some more. I'm not aware of liquid worm casting but I think you could make your own. As it's like dirt I'd take a teaspoon full and mix in warm water and see how it dissolves. However as you're probably aware there is fertiliser for hydroponic and I think there are some with seaweed which is also good. Hope you find something that works. x
For some plants that you receive, they often come with a plant that emerges from a big stump. What do you suggest we do with the big stump after acclaimation? Do you try to keep the stump out of the substrate? Or do you find it to be okay if it's left in there?

Hiya, if you have a stump, if it doesn't have roots I'd put it in perlite. If it has good roots I'd put it in moss until you see good development and the emergence of a new leaf. You could put it into soil but I'd want to monitor it a little more closely hence why I'd start with perlite or moss as well as giving it an increased level of oxygen flow. I'd also place it under a grow light and in a slightly brighter spot than where you'd finally place it.
Hi Kimberly, that would be fine. I'd probably have the same ratio of perlite and bark and a little more soil. If you can get coco coir at some point that'd be great, I use that instead of soil and prefer it.
How would you compare liquidirt to that orchid mix? I initially thought I was giving my plants everything they needed by watering with diluted liquidirt, then I heard it doesn't work as a fertilizer. Would this orchid mix replace or supplement liquidirt?

I've not tried liquidirt but from the information i've found, quite a few of their ingredients I already use in my plant mix so I don't think it would really benefit me. I think it helps in supporting the organisms within the soil but seems to lack quite a few minerals though a few of the ingredients will provide some i'm not sure about the quantity. If anything I'd think of liquidirt as a supplement.
Is a grow light 14 or 15 inches above the plant about right for these plants? This was a great video. I pick up my El Choco on Monday.

Oh one more question. I use the water meter too. I was planning on watering when at a reading of 3. What reading do you use as a guide?

I water when it's at or near 3 but I check the moisture level 2-3 inch down in the soil. At worst it will be between 2-3 but that's not too often. When it's at 3 it'll get a normal watering, if at 2 and due, i'll flush the pot.
Thanks for the video! My el Choco has developed some yellowing on both mature and new leaves and I believe it could be chlorotic leaves due to watering with tap water OR lack of root aeration. The root is basically a big chunk and I had it sitting in wet LECA, thinking that would help it root. Are they pretty sensitive to tap water?

Depending on how hard or soft you water is this could have an effect on your leaves but my experience with other philos, is that the plant is in too bright or harsh a light. The other contributing factor is a lack of nutrients like iron, zinc or manganese. However as you mentioned it is in lecca, it's possible the lecca is a little too compacted and the root(s) are suffering. If you want to assist with root development I'd place it in moss or perlite. It provides a good amount of aeration whilst allowing the roots to grow freely yet still being in a moist environment. Hope that helps.
