It might have gone unnoticed by most but that interviewer was really good at his job. Prepared, interested, he had well formulated questions and he was very professional. Kudos!
no matter what people say down here, YJMalmsteen will always be for every post-80's guitar men the GOD of Guitar. Period. None composed a song like Far beyong the sun... Queen in love, You don't remember (I'll never forget) etc. Only a God could do that. And it was a God named Yngwie Johann Malmsteen. For ever and ever.
On August 2009 Time Magazine Named Yngwie #9 on its List of 10. Best Electric Guitar Players Of All Time. Congratulations To The Neo-Classical King. Keep On Rocking Forever !!
This is a really good interview, despite Yngwie's reputation as a self-centered prick he doesn't show any of those tendencies. Also, he sounds like a really smart guitarist with a very clever approach to music, he actually gives some interesting answers instead of "practice practice practice" to the question "what's your advice to young players?"
@gorillabelly1 wow, VERY well articulated. I always thought the JD Roberts interviews were like a chat between friends or experienced colleagues. Reminds me of Jon Stewart's style of interviewing, along with the solid bank of knowledge in the interviewer. Erica Ehm was eye candy, a nice aspect of Much but definitely never gonna be any deep interviews with her!
wow, did I miss some stuff back then! Been following Yngwie since his arrival and never got to see stuff like this. I see John on CNN, or is it HLN?, and never suspected...He looked genuinely interested in interviewing Yngwie and asked lotsa good questions.
Ja, Yngve is a common name in Sweden. All his did was Americanized his name. He dropped his last name and added his mother's last name Rigmor Malmsten, but this was also Americanized, i.e., Malmsteen. I hope this helps. He is an amazing showman. If you haven't seen him live you should.
Hahaha yngwie must of felt like an idiot when the V.J mentioned the song "God Blessed Video" becuase Steve Vai wrote that song with Alcatrazz soon after Yngwie left
If you think that's good, you should listen to his Classical (non fusion) work like Toccata. He is a control freak and all arrangements and production values are his alone. Very under rated in North America as most Excellent musicians are.
Maybe not back then but especially during the 90's when he was doing alot of instructional video he might as well of said on them "look how fast I am!?" before everyone song.
yeah, on the G3 live in denver dvd from 2003, he uses a cheap white mexi strat with a rosewood neck (at this point he no longer played rosewood necks live) the back had duct tape on the back, as it was pre split for easier smashing lol
I didn't like the interviewer. He's done a good job but there is something about him not being sincere and spontaneous. And what's with the 1st question he asked regarding to the song Alcatrazz recorded after yngwie left? look at the way he asked it; just as if to TEASE yngwie or piss him off or i donno make him feel ashamed of leaving alcatrazz. This question shocked me, I mean who doesnt know(especially journalists) that the song isn't yngwie's... no wonder y Yngwie isn't "nice" to media today
When I met him he was very nice, I think the arrogant thing tied to him is an undeserved stigma, I know plenty of assholes who have no talent & reason, in fact most people are naturally assholes.
"With the exception of Van Halen" Yngwie's is the only band that the interviewer knows of "that carries the guitarist's name." Well Gary Moore, Jeff Beck Group, Michael Schenker Group and others say, "Hold My Courvoisier." Those were actual bands that had some great musical talents like Neil Carter, Don Airey, Barry Sparks, Cozy Powell, etc. Sorry, but what a cheese puff interviewer...
i think that what he is trying to say is that you have to find different technical solutions when playing something that isn't written for your instrument. But you got a point! :)
This is a good interview.
He asks exactly what he should be asking.
It might have gone unnoticed by most but that interviewer was really good at his job. Prepared, interested, he had well formulated questions and he was very professional. Kudos!
Best jacket ever
Damn, 80s were pure magic in every way, I say this over and over, just can't help it..
wow...the interviewers voice is awesome! great voiceover sound....
indeed , he should be doing radio
@@hexer6469 He became a CNN anchor lol!
I taped it off of MuchMusic in '86.

JD Roberts was a great interviewer. Those were the glory days of MuchMusic. “The Power Hour”! 🎸
Not a guitarist -- Jean Luc Ponty. He is a jazz violinist, His album "Enigmatic Ocean" from 1977 features Allan Holdsworth on guitar and is a classic.

This is so tight.
fenders are quite smooth
OMG ITS JOHN ROBERTS!!
he's soooo handsome :*
This is awesome.
That interviewer asked some good questions man.
It depends if it was before June 30 then he was 22 after 23. Rock On Yngwie !
I agree. He seemed less pretentious when he was younger. He was also more creative back then. But I still love his playing.
Really Good!

HarmonicMinorJ:
yeah i think so too. yngwie rocks!
holy shit, the guy from That Metal Show
his early stuff from 82-87 you can tell he sat down and worked on writing a lot more, his songs were more unique, but after that i agree with you
i want more yngwie interviews i have watch all these 1000 times imy drug is yngwie fuckin malmsteen

wow sik interview.....nice to see malmsteen when hes young....seems a lot less cocky....either way... hes incrdible
Fascinating.
@sicktkdchick we should bring the 80´s back XD
The guy from That Metal Show! Ha!

very good.
A lot of people talk about what an arrogant jerk Malmsteen is. In every interview I see, he's nothing but a nice guy.
he was vicious with that guitar!!!!!!!!
he's the anchor on CNN's american morning, you should check it out. I can't believe this is him!
yeah, on the G3 live in denver dvd from 2003, he uses a cheap white mexi strat with a rosewood neck (at this point he no longer played rosewood necks live) the back had duct tape on the back, as it was pre split for easier smashing lol
Cool to see Yngwie plugging jazz. I wonder what he thought of Fagen and Becker?
All time best GUITARIST!!!
Any questions?
@xStiltzkinX absolut. the best of all is the jacket! in need it and wear it day and night
I don't get that feeling at all. The interviewer seems to be taking a lot of interest in him. He seems to be asking intelligent questions.
Skinny Yngwie :D
Yngwie, you don't take from direct classical themes? Your first record is loaded with themes directly from classical composers.
@Megatrane holy shit , yngwie malmsteen :D
@sicktkdchick
yeah... defenetifly !! and the clothing style damn that would be amazing !! :D
KUNG!!! hur mår du jag mår bra tack hehe KUNG!!
victorwahl, I have often made that same observation. lol "basically" and "stuff like that".
He reminds me a bit of Gary Moore the way he talks
hehe!
@pinksynth Nah. Have you seen John Roberts on CNN jamming with Rush?
Could that interviewer be wearing anymore shirts / collars lol
I hate how he says rock n roll. Yngwie is neoclassical metal.
fer sher
"I don't really let it go to my head too much" Yeah right. He's still awesome though.
nobody can touch yngwie !
He never was a douche.
He were more creative and more "down to earth" back then...
@sicktkdchick yes!
Isn't that interviewer the guy from 'That Metal Show'?
He Was born Lars Johan Yngve Lannerback.
Nice boots at 7.50...
Hendrix and Blackmore and stuff like that lol!
I dont think so, at 4:16 he says something about jazz chords and scales... and then he says "(jazz) is more cromatic"
@sicktkdchick i put my hair like that haha and im only 15, never seen the 80z =(
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk..............meu passado me condenaa....uAHSuHAsuAH
q feuraa
The guy interviewing him is such a non-musician it's almost painful.
I didn't like the interviewer. He's done a good job but there is something about him not being sincere and spontaneous. 0:03 thats it !, Ing-Vay. The mystery of Yngwie solved !
Yngwie you are god
When I met him he was very nice, I think the arrogant thing tied to him is an undeserved stigma, I know plenty of assholes who have no talent & reason, in fact most people are naturally assholes.
Why doesn't he mention Uli Jon Roth as an influence?
He should!
why cant much have yngwie on here now instead of that fall out boy shit
He says chromatic later, but truly a lot of jazz is chromatic...well neo jazz, jazz fusion.
Yngwie in response to being a guitar hero at 5:40- "I don't really let it go to my head."
BULLSHIT!
well i would think david lee roth would do the lyrics since hes a bad ass singer and i say that yngwie made better songs than steve vai
Hard to believe he is now a White House Reporter en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Roberts_(journalist)
its funny, he calls him a "guitar hero" and like 20 years later he's endorsing the video game.
for a few years he wore the Howard Stern/John Lennon style. Those looked cooler.
Jean Luc Ponty
4x12 Haha you´re absolutely right! He seemed way more humble back in the day, nowadays he is too cocky.
7:50 Jesus, Blackmore !
"jazz is more ... cromatic" he said :S
cool interview !
how old was he there?
24 or 25
@@fbi..nasa. over 10 years for that answer lol
@@fbi..nasa. and its wrong too lol
He was 22 or 23 years old during that time
@@fettergraf u must be one of the earliest youtube user, amazing
he really likes to say "basicly". thats his favorite phrase that he thinks makes him sound smart. i love this guy becouse he has an anormous ego!
John Roberts before he was chief White house Coresspondant.
awkward moment when your guitar is a cheap, mexican made with white finish and rosewood fretboard just like in the vid...:(
I don't think he was he was just a little cocky the way he acted and performed buuuuuuut its ok cause the way he plays is well umm enough.
Actaully he says jazz is more common...in sweden...not chromatic hehehe
The who suck, if they spent more time playing their instruments as aposed to smashing them then they might be a little more melodic...
This interviewer is a bit of a tart, he forgets Vandenberg was out at this time.
@sicktkdchick
I`m 13 :P
do you realize that you are insulting a crappy much music interview that's over 20 years old????
"With the exception of Van Halen" Yngwie's is the only band that the interviewer knows of "that carries the guitarist's name." Well Gary Moore, Jeff Beck Group, Michael Schenker Group and others say, "Hold My Courvoisier." Those were actual bands that had some great musical talents like Neil Carter, Don Airey, Barry Sparks, Cozy Powell, etc.
Sorry, but what a cheese puff interviewer...
HOW DO YOU TRANSLATE VOILIN AND FLUTE MUSIC TO GUITAR ? LMAO ....GUITAR IS IN TREBLE CLEF , NOTHING TO TRANSLATE . JUST READ IT .
i think that what he is trying to say is that you have to find different technical solutions when playing something that isn't written for your instrument.
But you got a point! :)
if you play with your ear you will understand.
Lol look at this nerd looking for any angle to poke fun at yngwie. You knew exactly what he meant. Stop being a douchebag
Speak Slowly ! I don't know what they're saying haha.
ughh, it pains me so much, to see a guitar get smashed
yes :) perhaps his frustration and ego mania came when he was getting fat :D
