  • Our climate in crisis has inspired people to try new things to adapt to climate change, but some are finding solutions in old ways - and even older creatures. Joe Rosato Jr. shows us how a rodent is helping to show the way in California.

    Canada was built on beaver! Beaver pelts are why the explorers from France and England came to northern
    North America in the first place. The beaver is on the Canadian five cent coin. And there were big floods
    here last week. And a beaver was out on the main public road!

    Does anyone know if beavers build dams in Calif. waterways that anadromous fish historically migrate through? If so, can/do they jump the dams?

    • @rickfeng4466
      @rickfeng4466 Год назад +5

      Yup. If anything, the beaver dams slow the overall flow speed of rivers and change the migrating route for fish from a non-stop marathon to a series of sprints(to jump over the low beaver dams) plus mostly slower-paced walkings.

    • @sfstucco
      @sfstucco Год назад

      @@rickfeng4466 -- THANK YOU! I didn't think I'd hear from anyone (with knowledge on this). Big, big thank you for sharing your knowledge!
      When I think about beaver dams, I am remind of the shallow, sort of terraced "micro" dams (for lack of a better description) I've noticed in northeast Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia region) & in other central European countries (only via Google Street View & photos!). I know that beavers, until quite recently, were not present in Italy for 450 years.
      So it made me wonder if, in the beavers' absence, humans imitated beavers in dam-making to serve their own needs, but in a way that allowed movement of fish to/from the sea.
      I just haven't gotten around to looking up the story of those.

      They don't know. That's why they issue 10j tags for "experimental species" in case they need culled. 😂 No one knows... These are experiments where they look back and ignore the bad, talk about the good and fuck the ecosystem based on politics rather than what's good for America.

    I *love* hearing about beaver reintroduction in California! We could use some here in the Central Valley. Their ability to mitigate droughts and wildfires should make them a no-brainer! Wetlands don't burn. I hope they'll become more prevalent in the foothills, too. Not sure the mountains have the right conditions. But we have deserts in this state, and if they plant some willows and cottonwoods for them to eat, beavers could transform quite a bit of our deserts into wetlands and grasslands!

      No. They stimulate the regrowth of the trees they cut down, which opens up the forest to sunlight so more varieties of plants can start to grow. The stumps of the trees they cut produce new shoots and eventually new trees. They're not stupid. Beavers plan ahead! 😁

    • @wendyscott8425
      @wendyscott8425 2 месяца назад

      @@joesgotya9930 Well, I'm sorry your grandfather's two trees were cut down, but he could have saved them by putting a protective barrier around them once he noticed the damage. It would have taken the beavers a long time to take those down. Did no one notice what was going on before they were destroyed?
      The way we do agriculture these days is not good for the planet. Plowing, fertilizing, pesticides, etc. all hurt the soil and cause it to be swept away in heavy rains or blown away in droughts. Beavers save water, putting it into the aquifers we have been depleting. Agriculture can work around what beavers do. No solution is perfect, at least in human terms, but sometimes we have to weigh the benefits against the detriments.
