California beavers leading the way in state environmental efforts

- Our climate in crisis has inspired people to try new things to adapt to climate change, but some are finding solutions in old ways - and even older creatures. Joe Rosato Jr. shows us how a rodent is helping to show the way in California.

I love Beavers
Beavers got their long overdue status as it should be! Go Beavers!
Canada was built on beaver! Beaver pelts are why the explorers from France and England came to northern
North America in the first place. The beaver is on the Canadian five cent coin. And there were big floods
here last week. And a beaver was out on the main public road!
Best DAM builders ever. SAVE the Beavers!!!!!!!
They release the most destructive animals to nature! 🤨 dam up the rivers causing more floods .
This beaver has done more for California than it's governors
A beaver is not greedy or arrogant like our Governor !
Beavers are industrious...
Napa…come for the wine, stay for the beavers!
The greatest fucking civil engineers in the natural world.
💀
Those MF’s will alter an entire forest !
I like those ballcaps! Instead of the California bear, its the California BEAVER on those ballcaps.
Nice beavers
Rock On 🤘🏻 Beavers 🦫 ❕
Leave It to Beaver
Are we still allowed to use the word "beaver" in Californa?
+NBCBayAreaNews *The public tolerance to beavers depends on context.* Out in the Deltas, beavers compromise the levees guarding the grain and legume fields, the fruit orchards, and new residences in sunken subdivisions.
We need more beavers and goats thank you💋😘
Does anyone know if beavers build dams in Calif. waterways that anadromous fish historically migrate through? If so, can/do they jump the dams?
Yup. If anything, the beaver dams slow the overall flow speed of rivers and change the migrating route for fish from a non-stop marathon to a series of sprints(to jump over the low beaver dams) plus mostly slower-paced walkings.
@@rickfeng4466 -- THANK YOU! I didn't think I'd hear from anyone (with knowledge on this). Big, big thank you for sharing your knowledge!
When I think about beaver dams, I am remind of the shallow, sort of terraced "micro" dams (for lack of a better description) I've noticed in northeast Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia region) & in other central European countries (only via Google Street View & photos!). I know that beavers, until quite recently, were not present in Italy for 450 years.
So it made me wonder if, in the beavers' absence, humans imitated beavers in dam-making to serve their own needs, but in a way that allowed movement of fish to/from the sea.
I just haven't gotten around to looking up the story of those.
@@sfstucco It's amazing what beavers can do for every environment they inhabit. There are now bunches of RUclips videos all about them from all over Europe and the US. Enjoy!
They don't know. That's why they issue 10j tags for "experimental species" in case they need culled. 😂 No one knows... These are experiments where they look back and ignore the bad, talk about the good and fuck the ecosystem based on politics rather than what's good for America.
Love happy beavers...
Mad beaver no bueno. 😂
It's always been about California Beavers
Always? I heard that when beavers first showed up here not too long ago, some people thought they weren't native to California. LOL As if they were native to every other state but ours! ::snicker::
And here I thought the most important wild animal in California was the cougar
Cougars have beavers too!
Ever seen a hairless beaver ? 🤣🦫
I *love* hearing about beaver reintroduction in California! We could use some here in the Central Valley. Their ability to mitigate droughts and wildfires should make them a no-brainer! Wetlands don't burn. I hope they'll become more prevalent in the foothills, too. Not sure the mountains have the right conditions. But we have deserts in this state, and if they plant some willows and cottonwoods for them to eat, beavers could transform quite a bit of our deserts into wetlands and grasslands!
Cool!❤
Beaver huggers ????
What next ?
They cut down all the trees around the creek. No trees left.
No. They stimulate the regrowth of the trees they cut down, which opens up the forest to sunlight so more varieties of plants can start to grow. The stumps of the trees they cut produce new shoots and eventually new trees. They're not stupid. Beavers plan ahead! 😁
Coppicing you mean..
@@wendyscott8425 Lol Beavers chewed down my grandfathers 300 year old Oak tree and his 50 year old Mulberry tree… yeah, those Trees did not come back lol.. and beavers can actually be a living nightmare for farmland and agriculture.. They’re not this magical creature that’s going to save planet earth. Give me a break
@@joesgotya9930 Well, I'm sorry your grandfather's two trees were cut down, but he could have saved them by putting a protective barrier around them once he noticed the damage. It would have taken the beavers a long time to take those down. Did no one notice what was going on before they were destroyed?
The way we do agriculture these days is not good for the planet. Plowing, fertilizing, pesticides, etc. all hurt the soil and cause it to be swept away in heavy rains or blown away in droughts. Beavers save water, putting it into the aquifers we have been depleting. Agriculture can work around what beavers do. No solution is perfect, at least in human terms, but sometimes we have to weigh the benefits against the detriments.
"!BREAKING NEWS!"
BEAVER; KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE DOING!
Peiople?
Mmmmnot so much!
GO BEAVERS!
Beavers aren't enough to offset the negative effects of another destructive invasive species...the californian.
Eventually the beavers will have to deal with homeless drug addicts.
Beavers are the second most destructive animals on earth, only second to humans... this is idiotic.
Beavers improve the habitat.
Where did you go to school? I guess you missed the biology class, not to mention ecology, and critical thinking.
@@wendyscott8425 A better school than you. I bet you think humans make the environment better. This is dumb propaganda from people who think making more reservoirs can help ignore climate change from human activities.
Now I will plan my trip to Napa,
$285,000. A beaver what a deal!
great job Governor Newsom
Beaver bbq
Beavers are overrated
No, they're not. If anything, they're underrated.
@@wendyscott8425 Yes, they are
@@4FYTfa8EjYHNXjChe8xs7xmC5pNEtz Have it your way. Obviously, facts aren't quite your forte. Enjoy!
@@wendyscott8425 Facts are my bag, baby, Beavers are overrated, and I will enjoy myself, thank you very much.
@@4FYTfa8EjYHNXjChe8xs7xmC5pNEtz
Like I said, have it your way. I'm thrilled to know beavers are coming back because they help with a whole lot of issues we have with our environment. I don't know where you get your facts, but I think perhaps you need to get another source for your information.
I regularly hunt Beaver 🦫. I’m very passionate about Beaver. I love beaver.
