The Cavern Beneath 69 Victoria Street

  • Maurice Dunstan recalls visiting the underground chamber beneath what had been the back garden of No. 69 Victoria Street, in 1970. After the terraced houses had been demolished and the area was being prepared for building maisonette blocks, a hole appeared in the ground, allowing unofficial access to the chamber.
    The chamber had been excavated by William Hemingway and his sons, several decades after the main Sand House tunnel network had been completed. William was the son-in-law of Henry Senior, creator of the Sand House.
