When you dye gym chalk do you just pour the colored water over the chalk then let it dry?

I use a flat piece of plastic that has a short edge and pour water in it and then i drop food coloring in spots into the water and set the chalk in it. It soaks it up and then i flip them over adding more color and water each time.
