I love the more personal content. I really appreciate your voice 🙂 You’re good at putting fast paced thoughts into coherent sentences. Please keep posting!
Well, welcome back to your channel.:-) Last year went well. I sold several stories and poems to e-zines and anthologies, and I wrote my very first standalone story, "The Hay Bale," a novelette which will be released on January 10th. I also wrote a dystopian novella which will be published with Potter's Grove Press later this year. And THIS year I'm writing a new novel (a weird horror with some Gothic elements). I'm in the outlining phase of that.
I heard (from a very reliable source of course) that a character named "Lena" in your upcoming fantasy book is the best character EVER created. Ha, jokes aside - I'm really happy for you ! Congrats on all the writing you've done last year and all the finished books you've published. I bet 2022 will be even greater for you, especially now that you have an amazing chat that supports and entertains you. I'm really looking forward to read more from you ! :D My own writing year was pretty disappointing but hey, my focus was mainly on sewing and crafting my cosplays, so it doesn't bother me too much - it was a good year in that regard :D Hope we see you soon on Twitch ! We miss you dearly but we also need someone to rebel against 💜
YES LENA I've also heard of this amazing character, did he say it was some kind of leech monster or something?? 😂 Excited for new streams in 2022! A revolution is only as good as the overlord it seeks to overthrow, etc etc 😉
authortube is *such* a grind. i've a very small channel, but i feel like i resonated so much with what you were saying about having your channel stagnate and feeling disheartened. but honestly, i really love your content (you're one of the OGs in this space!) and i'm glad you still have plans to keep the channel going at your own pace :) congrats on an amazing writing year as well & best of luck with 2022!!
@3:15 When it comes to growth I know how it feels to be stuck in a rut, but creators need understand that slowed growth is mostly attributed to market saturation. More and more people are getting involved in the creative sphere. The thing is, the numbers only matter if all you're focused on is pushing your own work, because I think as time goes on it's going to be more important to focus on engagement with those who have already chosen to pay attention to what you're doing (because quality will trump quantity in the long term). As a creator, I would rather have a smaller circle of dedicated supporters with whom I can actually engage with like actual thinking human beings, than have a large following made up of mostly deadwood. I will tell you right now, that I usually avoid wasting my time with very large channels, because I know the engagement from the creator is going to be shit, because based on the logistics alone they can't possibly keep up with the amount of viewers that they have - in terms of meaningful conversation, and the numbers also tend to be a factor when those creators with large followings consider collaborations as well (Which can be a double edged sword for people like me, who believe content is king). I would say focus on developing relationships within your sphere of influence rather than trying to bolster and dwell upon the numbers, because for one it makes you seem ungrateful when you do (as if the people who are paying attention aren't good enough), and for two I think things are only going to get more and more difficult for individuals to stick out among the crowd within the ever expansive virtual market, so fostering meaningful online relationship that have depth will be more valuable than having a shit ton of fly-by-night flakes who posses a fleeting superficial interest for a short period of time then move on to the next best thing as if you are just another trend. Try to envision what it would be like to have 200+ individuals sitting in a room and paying attention to what you have to say. You mean to tell me that's something to just poo-poo over? Each and every single one of those individuals may represent an opportunity to realize that what you do means something. We all have to find our people, form our tribes, and strengthen those relationships as if we were all acquaintances from the same small town. The only difference is that we can't reach out and physically touch each other, however, our words have the power to touch the lives of many, but the only way we can know for sure is if we actually take the time to engage with the audience (not for the sake of satisfying the algorithms, but because we want to remind each other that we're still human). #LFLR "VBW"
2021 was my best year in writing too! After "We're Not Home" I managed to squeak in two stories to zines that both came out on Jan 1st! Not sure if I should count that as last year or this year though.. it would be nice to say I'm starting out strong 2022 but that's kind of cheating lol
I'm glad to see you back on this channel!! Honestly, I don't understand why you're not more popular. I really like your content because it's genuine and relaxed, and I feel like RUclips needs that amidst all the chaos. Also, stuff the analytics. You have a loyal fanbase that is willing to listen to you make fart sounds with a toilet roll on twitch livestreams and look past the fact that you removed two innocent meerkats from view... All jokes aside, I'm enjoying your content and so are so many other people. I didn't get much writing done this year because I've found the fantasy world I've building quite contradictory. Then, this weekend, I literally had an epiphany. It was wild, but everything just seemed to click into place. I hope now I can finally buckle down and write some stuff.
Heyo, major congrats on a great year of writing! The stuff you accomplished this year is super impressive (and inspiring to unpublished plebs such as myself lol) and doing it all while also working, uploading videos, and doing twitch streams is A LOT. Channel stats aside, I hope there is some freedom to be found in not really worrying about the numbers. Whatever direction you decide to take this channel, whether it be sit-down-and-chat videos or talking about your personal writing/publishing experiences, we'll all be here! Cheers to an even better 2022!
Congrats on all your short stories and your large novel publications :) Still working on my first draft 🙃 I've been working on this story since June 2021, so between the kids and work with a shoulder injury I'll be SUPER happy if I manage to get through that and then start on draft 2 this year.
I really like your videos. I watch them all and find them much more chill and relaxed than other youtubers in the community. It's just a good vibe. You're very introspective about your writing and I appreciate that. Definitely no need to compare yourself to other channels, either. The algorithm simply supports channels with regular video updates, of a certain length, that stick to a specific theme. It's not a reflection of the quality of your channel at all. Keep being you.
Honestly Cam I feel you here, I've literally been sooo done eith 2021 that I haven't even looked at Twitch so I didn't know yiu weren't streaming anyway. This year's just been a fucking lot
Great video Cam! And thanks for being open and honest about your channel. But to have published a short story, an anthology and an entire novel in one year is pretty incredible and you have every right to be super proud of that! Really looking forward to seeing what you put out this year!
Congrats on all your publications in 2021, Cam! I had a great publishing year in 2021 - 7 of my short stories were purchased by publishers, which is my best ever by quite a margin. All the best for your exciting projects for 2022!
my plans this year are basically finish my current WIP (I hope it doesnt get to 350K words like the first one 🙄), finish editing the first one, and get beta readers... After that I want to resume my choose your own adventure horror novel... I stopped writing it like 5 years ago, so it'd be fun to resume/redo it with some new ideas I have.
I quite enjoy this channel, to be honest. Just like I enjoyed your book, even though I'm usually not that a big fan of horror in general. But because of that exact reason I'm looking forward to your fantasy series, I just love fantasy. A good year to you, stay healthy, and all that. I'll definitely keep watching this. 😄
HNY Cam ~ and I am looking forward to your collection! Liked your short work in Local Haunts and while I've not picked up your novel yet, I aim to. I've similar feelings about my first novel and you put it graciously to say it is the best work at the time it was written. We can't judge our own work, nor can we adopt others' judgement. It's like the judgement of Solomon.
I'm sad to hear you don't feel your channel is growing, but you have people that will always support you. It sounds like 2022 will be a good year for you and I wish you the best. I myself will publish this year (after four years of working on my damn book) and can only hope it will be well received. Oh, also, your fantasy series sounds cool! I'm still working on my writing to get good enough to do my fantasy series idea any justice. But a fun episodic type series seems refreshing for you :)
I've missed you on Twitch! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Years despite the lockdowns. Couldn't make it for a while before you took a break too
Glad you updated us. As someone with a dead authortube channel I'm thinking of reviving, this really hit home. I love the idea of this episodic fantasy series! Really looking forward to seeing it published.
Before the year was over I felt like I had dropped the ball on my creative endeavors. I didn't write as much as I had planned to, in part because I had a lot of things going on in my personal life, but after reflecting on the year and looking at my numbers, I really did do more than 2020, and I got to a stage in my novel where I'm going through revisions. That's the furthest I've gotten in novel writing! I still want to write more in 2022, and get through revisions and do something with the novel (queries?? 🤢). Like you said, I'm also trying to look at the positive things I did/what I accomplished, rather than what I feel was lacking. 2022 is a new year full of possibilities, so I'm focusing on that. 😊
We’ve missed you on twitch (I miss the chaos lol) and are eagerly awaiting your return, can’t wait to see your plans for your book birthday. Hopefully 2022 will be the year we all start to get back to normal XxX
Congratulations on the publications and best luck in your 2022 goals! Keeping the channel just for fun and updates rather than focused for fame doesn't seem bad to me. It's an honest outlet and feels like a more authentic way for people to see inside your author's journey.
Wishing you a good 2022 in writing and in life! 🙂 I've been writing shorts for myself, without the intent on any of it being published. Like you say, it's fun when you're imagining up all these locations and adventures (though many of mine are far more mundane than what fantasy writers dream up).
Oh dang, I won't lie, that's sad to hear. If it's not something you want to do anymore though, I completely understand. Hopefully I'll still see you around, whether that be on Twitch or comment sections
I have come to the conclusion this past year that I like reading horror more than I like writing it! It is SO exhausting and takes a lot out of me. Coming up with monsters and ghosts is a lot of fun, but when you have to write truly awful people and the horrible things they do, it gets rough. I think if I just hover around spooky I'll be alright. 😅
I started writing in February 2021, and I finished the second draft of my dark fantasy novel December 30th. My goal for 2022 is to get it out to beta readers, edit it again and again and start querying. And work on other projects as well. Your idea of episodic fantasy sounds great. And refreshing compared to the 150k books released so often 😄
I love the more personal content. I really appreciate your voice 🙂 You’re good at putting fast paced thoughts into coherent sentences. Please keep posting!

Cam, I was waiting for you on Twitch this morning. ;(
