I’m new to your channel and am also in Maryland (Annapolis area)! This is my first year doing a garden and I’ve been binge watching your videos. I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed after watching other channels, but am feeling more confident now! Your laid back approach and positive attitude is really helping me just go for it and not worry about doing everything so perfectly. I really appreciate your content and will be continuing to watch everything you put out!
You’re lucky to be in the same area as Gary. I’m in Ohio and have been watching him for 4 years now. It’s incredible how much I’ve learned and improved from Gary’s videos. All the best!

Fantastic video. So comprehensive. For me, it’s both review and new materials/build-tactics - awesome time of year for this (plant size) - your garden looks absolutely amazing. Sharing the eye-line consideration - the sun angle for the arches/tee-pees - so detailed and thoughtful. A Master class in resourceful vertical gardening. THANK YOU.

Just a heads up, those green plastic poles have a thin metal tube in the middle that actually give them their rigidity. My personal experience is that they rust under the plastic and will fail without warning. I had a row of roma tomatoes clipped to a string trellis that had a green plastic post about every 3 feet. One rusted under the plastic and failed, taking the entire row down with it. I use only t-post now.
100% true. I only use tposts now. Those plastic coated tubes are only handy for row markers. Using 16’ cattle panels for an arch trellis works great. I have 4 of them that make an awesome trellis for cucumbers and pole beans.
They are flimsy with too much pressure, they bend. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
I love the look of the $249.00 Jardin arch by gardeners supply but its to pricey for me. So, I bought 4 , 10’ rebar at Lowe’s . I bent about 4’ on each end. wired together so it sorta made a arch. Then I took my old wire tomato cages, unwrapped them and wrapped and wired around the arch. Looks almost like the Jardin Arch but MUCH cheaper! I love the ones I’ve made . I have one for cucumbers, watermelon and cantaloupe.
Much cheaper for sure. Effective and looks good. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

Another couple of materials to consider. Vinyl coated clothes line wire , for trellises or reinforcing other structures. At Lowe's they've cut pieces of aluminum wire for tying fence splices. A little pricey but last "forever ". Excellent looking peas and peaches!

I've purchased a few used, tall CD racks from thrift stores to trellis smaller plants and flowers. They are usually metal and covered with plastic, just like the closet racks. Repurpose the plastic, nylon cordage used to hold pine needle and straw bails together for trellising and climbing vines. Also, using old metal bed frames, spray painted to slow any rusting.

New sub for you! Wonderful video! I recently added 2 cattle panel arches to my garden for tomatoes. I'm in love! Next year I'll be adding more. They're such space savers and are astatically pleasing. Being an artist that's a must in the garden! I've done fence post trellising and framed fencing sections for years. I enjoy using old wooden ladders and I'm constantly on the lookout for old ladders at yard sales. They're a lovely addition to any garden. I have a young pumpkin plant I need to get creative and trellis. You're inspiring! Thank you so much!

Can you trellis pumpkins? Maybe like the A frame? I've planted them in a 5 x 5 raised bed and nervous as to what will happen if they have no where to grow I love the way you use simple items. You've given me some good ideas. Thank you!

You can zip tie 2 of the ladder mesh pieces together (not on top of one another but side by side/wider) and use a piece of rebar weaved into bottom rung to stabilize a little better.

One thing you can do, so you don't have to support the fruit growing up a trellis like your wooden hinged trellis is simply open it wider so the angle the plant grows up isn't nearly as steep and the fruit can just rest on the trellis. This might not be an option if you are growing in very limited space though. But if you have even a fraction of the space you are working with and you grow vertically to avoid pests and for better air circulation, I would think growing vertically at shallower incline would be preferable. I would open up those hinged trellises to a much wider angle. Everyone raves about the cattle panel arches or trellises but I have yet to see any videos of one being made. I would like to see one built from start to finish - including going to the store, buying, transporting, unrolling, cutting and installing them. I bet they are TREMENDOUSLY DIFFICULT to work with - especially for one person to do alone.
So right, I can never get that hammock thing right, twice I lost my water melon, last time the plastic mesh bag from Amazon cut through the stem and that was it
@@verawallace9055 What I usually do for melons is start them in my raised bed and then when they start vining and or have baby melons I make a raised cot off the ground close to the same length as the raised bed by weaving green plastic "chicken wire" through two bamboo poles on either side. Then I just find whatever happens to be lying around to raise the "cot" up off the ground a foot or two or even rest one side against the raised bed and have the other on the ground. This way I can keep track of the vines and remove excess length of vines that already have fruit and they don't have to climb anything at all.
@@emilybh6255 Thanks for the advice I was thinking about growing them low this time around, a couple weeks ago my neighbor gave me some chicken wire so no more wondering what will I use it for, hope you have a wonderful growing season also 😊

Help please! Aphids attack on my hellebore and trellis flowers. 2nd year. I will blast with the garden hose. But what else? Organic spray isn’t working. Captain Jack’s? I did see ladybugs eating them on the daisy’s several feet away… Let’s not kill them..
So water spray often. Did you try soapy water.? I would make it stronger but test spay as to no hurt the plant leaves. That wont hurt lady bugs. Maybe add some oil. But if you blast them off and damage seems minimal. You might be able to wait it out and let the ladybugs get them.

another trellis/arbor idea: Some years ago, my last apple tree came down in a storm. It was ancient and had not been tended for years before I moved here, and there was a wisteria vine growing on it. I like the wisteria flowers, but the vines are a pest. However, I wanted to make an arbor for it and not spend a lot. I had a few pieces of rebar (very long ones). I was told it would bend easily?! Well, it did bend easily. I was surprised that an old lady could bend it. I bent it into 4 U shaped pieces, and since we had had heavy rains recently, I was able to push them well into the ground. UUUU sort of, but the other direction and in a 'box'... I had an old circular thing from an ancient washing machine, and wired it into the top with some baling wire. My wisteria still grows on it, and it is nearly invisible. It was totally free, because the rebar had been given to me. The finished arbor is about 8 ft tall.

Self tapping screws. You should pre -drill the t post first but if your using a lighter weight t post you might muscle one in without pre-drilling. Use a slightly smaller drill bit than your screw diameter. I would recommend a self tapping screw with a 5/16 head on it because you will have more control of the screw that way.
Im sure there are other ways. I just provided the best way I know to attach wood to metal. That's how they do it in the construction trade and they use this method to metal frame and finish all the soulless crap you see being built around you--at least in the US 😂

Thanks for this timely video, Gary. I was just searching for some good trellising tips. One to share with you: I suggest using black poly tubing instead of the white PVC. It won't get brittle and break down in the sunlight. The 100 psi stuff is pricey, but the 75 psi is pretty cheap.

Your laid back approach and positive attitude is really helping me just go for it and not worry about doing everything so perfectly. I really appreciate your content and will be continuing to watch everything you put out!
Good luck! Gary is very helpful. Welcome

Good information and clearly presented.
Much cheaper for sure. Effective and looks good.

Another couple of materials to consider. Vinyl coated clothes line wire , for trellises or reinforcing other structures. At Lowe's they've cut pieces of aluminum wire for tying fence splices. A little pricey but last "forever ".

Great idea.

Thanks for sharing and showing. I will use some of these ideas😊

I had a lil Weenie dog who would “help” me in the garden and her payment was always strawberries or green beans that’s she plucked off the vine herself. 😊😊💗💗
Can you trellis pumpkins? Maybe like the A frame? I've planted them in a 5 x 5 raised bed and nervous as to what will happen if they have no where to grow

@@emilybh6255 Thanks for the advice I was thinking about growing them low this time around, a couple weeks ago my neighbor gave me some chicken wire so no more wondering what will I use it for, hope you have a wonderful growing season also 😊
Thanks. 2 people can manage them very easily.

Ladder mesh- at Home Depot, its in the masonry section, by the rebar. Mine is aisle 19- concrete section. Past the plywood section, up on the back wall. $4.57 ea, dimensions 8"x120". 9-gauge hot dip galvanized. Look for non-rusted ones, as they also come in non-galvanized.

Cheers, Gary! Love your videos. I’m using cattle panels this year for the 1st time. I’m very excited! For your PVC hoop beds, what size netting do you use (or plastic)? Thanks!🪴💚

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Should have mentioned on the rebar prices, You can usually find 10' piece at the same price if not cheaper than a 2' section. The store realizes most people are unable to transport the 10' section and price accordingly. Yard spikes for ~$1 are a better buy.

another trellis/arbor idea:
Some years ago, my last apple tree came down in a storm.
Wow that is really creative and must look great. Thanks for the idea

How do you attach 2x4 to metal?
Self tapping screws. You should pre -drill the t post first but if your using a lighter weight t post you might muscle one in without pre-drilling. Use a slightly smaller drill bit than your screw diameter. I would recommend a self tapping screw with a 5/16 head on it because you will have more control of the screw that way.
Im sure there are other ways. I just provided the best way I know to attach wood to metal. That's how they do it in the construction trade and they use this method to metal frame and finish all the soulless crap you see being built around you--at least in the US 😂
Machine screw with a bolt.
This was secured using wire. Twisted very tightly.

Do you think that muscadines will drop fruit if in drought conditions? I had tiny grapes forming, didn't water like I should have and now the grapes are gone!😕
Gary: Do you grow Aloe Vera plants in your garden. I did not see any video. or perhaps you should consider making one.
I have not. Ill put it on my list

How can I get "Products" off my screen? I’m going to unsubscribe if it constantly blocks the view 😞
Not sure as that is all on RUclipss side. But the controls are typically on the viewer side. I dont place them there.

Always wondered, why is it called The "Rusted" Garden? Is it all the rusted concrete mesh you have? :-). JK. I love the use of those too.
Close. The rusted tools. I tend to create by just leaving stuff out and about.

Thanks of the black poly tube. I'll look around for it.

You do understand you can do voice overs for the late Vincent Price with 100% accuracy. Your voices are identical. Lol
I have heard that. That would be cool.

I was using the metal spring portion of a baby bed as a trellis for my tomatoes, we have a scumbag guy with a truck that comes around on trash day to see if there are any recyclable metals… he stole my trellis, yanking my tomato plants out of the ground in the process😡
That is a great reuse.

I love the creativity aspect of trellis ideas. The possibilities are almost endless. I find myself looking at everything as a potential trellis hahaha. Looking great.
I agree it is endless on creating vertical garden. Right I always has an eye and thought on new trellises.
